As we want to spend 99% of our nights on Teulu at anchor, it was pretty vital we upgraded our anchor set up. As temperatures inch toward triple digits, we put down our tools and head for the water. It's also a good thing we have a new set of paddle boards (thanks to our friends at Vetus!!) where we can ditch out on afternoon work and head to the Chesapeake Bay for a little fun on the water. In this week's episode of work though, I do get around to applying fairing compound to the bulkheads inside the forward berth, and finally squeeze myself back into the cabinet I've been dreading to take on its overhead. With bigger news, the daggerboard cases we worked so hard on are finally ready to go in!! After talking to the builder and designer while in Vietnam, we made slight changes from their layout, so we can push it further out on deck and give ourselves more walking space there. This means lots of extra measurements on our part though, and hoping we got it right! Stay tuned as Matt cuts a big hole in the top of our deck, and we see if we can get the case in its proper place. The Barracuda lake, on Coron island, Palawan, Philippines, is a very unusual dive site famous for its Thermocline. Lake Barracuda is of more interest to divers for its unique layers of fresh, salt and brackish water and dramatic temperature shifts, which can reach as high as 38°C under the thermocline. The size of the thermocline is maximum one meter, and the temperature is only 26°C just on the top of thermocline (a gap of 12°C on one meter). Rigging is one of those things that everyones knows is super important but most of us struggle to be on top of. It's also an easy subject to just forget about and hope for the best. Obviously that is not a good way to go! When you break things down most aspects are just common sense and it's easily within the grasp of most people to get on top of their rigging and keep things safe. This is the first of a two part series on rigging following a full re-rig of Fair Isle a cutter rigged Hans Christian 48T. We will take you through checking over the whole rig, changing all the standing rigging, fitting STA-LOK compression fittings and fitting a new Furlex unit from Selden. In order to get the best advice and techniques to do the work we are filming with Jade Edwards-Leaney from The Boat Shed Wales. He was the rigger for Ian Herbert-Jones's boat 'Puffin' in the Golden Globe Race as well as an emergency re-rigging of Abilash Tomy's boat when it was damaged on the way to the start line. We removed our 2004 Westerbeke diesel in preparation to install an electric motor powered by marine-grade lithium batteries. Removing the diesel was a filthy job. We pretty much got covered in oil and diesel during the process. We're super excited for it to be OUT of the boat so we can get to cleaning and painting. Our end goal for this boat is to be completely off the grid. Sure, going completely electric will be better for the environment, and that's a plus, but that's not the biggest reason we're doing this. We're doing this because we love simplicity, and an electric motor is the simplest and purest form of auxiliary propulsion for a sailboat in our minds. Getting rid of the need to fill diesel jerry cans, the need to constantly service and maintain the engine, and the need to constantly search for more propane for your stove, is the real reason. I'm not going to sit here and tell you that electric is better for everyone, because it's certainly not. But for us, going electric was a no-brainer. Jeff traveled to Honolulu, Hawaii to film our first #CruisingConversations episode aboard Lucky Duck, the first Diesel Duck 462, built in 2005. This is a new series of JMYS videos that welcomes our viewing audience to meet many of the “characters” we connect with in the trawler world. It is our hope to record interesting interviews that will provide helpful and amusing insights. We want to help spread the word about what trawlers are, where they can go and, more importantly, introduce you to many of the people who own and operate them. Mike Pizl purchased the Diesel Duck 462, Lucky Duck, in the summer of 2018 with Jeff as his broker. Mike is a gifted mechanic, seasoned navigator and experienced aviator. He bought this steel trawler to sail home to Hawaii. As you will see in the video, Lucky Duck lived up to her name. It was a long crossing and as we started talking about this adventure, the “story” became how Mike was successful in diagnosing and making repairs out at sea. As you will see, there were many “exciting moments” during the trip. The title is not just “catchy”, it is true, Lucky Duck was at times a sitting duck and literally, Dead-In-The-Water. The engine shut down more than once (primarily to bleed the fuel lines). The completed video does end up feeling like a highlight reel of things breaking and being fixed… This in no way is meant to be a slight on Mike or the Diesel Duck brand. Things happen out at sea and you do your best to prepare before you leave, but that doesn’t mean that it will always be a carefree, uneventful trip. We don’t want to spoil the show by telling you everything that happened, please sit back and listen to Mike talking us through some of his experiences. Mike is the first to admit that he departed without the necessary spare parts he should have had. Sometimes you just don’t know what you don’t know. Being a veteran sailor and aviator is a strong background, but each trawler is unique and what happened on Lucky Duck would have been difficult to anticipate. Remember, Lucky Duck was still a relatively new boat for Mike and even though he spent some time in local northwest waters shaking her down before the passage, he may have benefited by waiting a bit longer; but everything seemed fine and the beginning of the trip was smooth sailing. Mike departed as planned, taking advantage of a positive weather window; with the boat full of fuel, provisioned and ready to sail west. Mike was ready, the boat was ready and during the trip they became even better acquainted as this journey of over two thousand miles nonstop put a strain on much of gear and systems. Of course, it would have been a boring interview if all Mike could talk about was beautiful sunrises, golden sunsets and calm seas. The good news is this trip had a happy ending and proved the boat and the owner were both capable and up to the task. Sure, there were some mishaps. Could they have been prevented or avoided? Hard to say, there are no guarantees when you aim at the horizon. Crossing an ocean is a big deal. You don’t just do it without careful planning and preparation. Lucky Duck has a sail plan for back up propulsion, but Jeff neglected to ask about it during the interview. Once you depart you need to stay on your toes and keep your eyes wide open. This particular trip summary is a good reminder for all of us that you have to be vigilant and address concerns at the earliest opportunity - problems can escalate if they are left to develop on their own. Hearing about challenging incidents and learning about work-arounds and solutions is important background for anyone else contemplating similar long distance trips. There’s always something new to learn on a boat at sea. A big THANK YOU to Mike Pizl for his time and for sharing what he learned. That is why it is called a “Joystick Steering System”. But in our opinion, the biggest advantage to this system is the simple fact that it’s available not only for new boats and the Evinrude G-2 series of engines, but for repower as well.

The day we had been waiting for since last October had finally arrived. Our new catamaran, also our new home, was waiting for us at Merrill Stevens Shipyard in Miami. Seeing our boat for the first time was the culmination of a nine month waiting period. We ordered our Seawind 1600 in October of 2019, and the production team shared videos of the build out process with us which we loved since we unfortunately couldn’t go to Vietnam. Not only our world, but the world as a whole changed drastically in those nine months. With the arrival of COVID-19 in March, we couldn’t help but wonder if we made the right decision. Everything was in motion so we kept moving forward. We sold our home of 16 years, and moved twice in two months, with the plan to move onboard the boat once she arrived. On the first day of commissioning everything was unwrapped and the team began setting up and testing the systems. Nance & Underwood Rigging and Sails arrived on the second day to assemble the mast and run the rigging. The next day a huge crane lifted the mast assembly and the team carefully stepped the mast. On the fourth day we sailed her up to Fort Lauderdale. It was surreal going through the canals of Fort Lauderdale on our new boat. It truly was a dream come true! We are super grateful to the Seawind Catamaran team and Steve from Finish Line for allowing us to observe and document the commissioning process. A huge thanks also to Nance + Underwood and the Merrill Stevens shipyard. It was an awesome experience and we’re thrilled to share it with you! Season 4 | Episode 81 | Sailing off the anchor and diving on the prop near Catalina Island On this episode we haul up the anchor at Button Shell Beach so we can make our way to a new, hopefully friendlier, anchorage further North. While we were fighting to haul up the 80lbs of 3/8 chain and 35lb anchor in 70 ft of water our long painter line found its way into our propeller and "Prop'ed" us leaving us with no engine, an anchor that was half way up after a hard struggle very near to the rocks. We hoisted the sails and sailed away from land with the light breeze that was coming off the island and made our way to deeper water to finish hauling up the anchor. Bonaire has over 400 caves and many of them are underwater. We went to find some of them but that was easier said than done! Our PADI open water course continues and we have the final exams the same day as a tropical storm is about to hit the island.
