After the two day check out process, we are finally able to begin our journey up the northern coast of Costa Rica. Our first stop after navigating the shallow area in Puntarenas is to meet up with a couple of our friends at a nearby anchorage. From here we sail overnight to Bahia Samara but we do not stay long as the anchorage is extremely uncomfortable. We pull anchor early in the morning and set off to an unknown destination hoping to find a place to get some rest. Feeling exhausted and a bit sea sick, we are beyond thankful when we happen on the anchorage of Bahia Guacamaya. Andrea und Jürgen möchten ihren nächsten Lebensabschnitt auf dem Wasser verbringen und open-end um die Welt segeln. Dafür suchen wir einen Katamaran mit viel Wohnraum und Komfort. Dabei liegt auch klar die Priorität bei der Bootssuche. Er soll einfach zu handeln sein mit allen Leinen am Steuerstand, Eignervariante, nicht zu groß, dennoch möglichst viel Raum bieten mit einem von beiden Seiten zugänglichen Bett. Das kennen wir ja von Centercockpitschiffen, die haben häufig ein Inselbett in der Heckkabine. Bei Katamaranen um die 40 Fuß ist das allerdings nicht Gang und Gebe, da ja die Rümpfe deutlich schmaler sind als der eines Monos. Wir haben während des Beginns der reiseunfreundlichsten Zeit der letzten Jahrzehnte den Markt auf den Kopf gestellt und viele Kontakte spielen lassen, um den richtigen Kat zu finden. Sogar Julia und Markus von @SailingInsieme sind dabei! Es gibt übrigens einen klaren Favoriten und das ist der Lagoon 420, der scheint nämlich alle Anforderungen der beiden zu erfüllen. Our boat is broken and we have 400nm to get to the boat yard, will we make it? https://www.sailingnandji.com Leaving the safety of the marina, we head out into the busy shipping area of the Malacca Strait. We have sailed and limped Nandji over 1600nm to get this far and now have a measly 400nm left to arrive to Langkawi and the ship yard where we can haul out and fix our beloved Nandji. The Malacca Strait is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world and has on average a ship entering or exiting its water every 6 minutes. We sail up the tight inshore designated traffic area squeezed between land and the shipping channel. With strong winds, heavy squalls, fishing nets and tons of little fishing boats to avoid and crossing the shipping lane into Kuala Lumper, this final 400nm was eventful you could say! We are a young couple with a dog, who with no sailing experience, bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing around the Pacific! We have just sailed 2000nm through Indonesia and have arrived to Malaysia to complete major boat work, ready for the next big adventure. We departed Australia 18 months ago and have since explored some amazing countries, met some beautiful people and experienced different cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it! In a huge storm the starboard hull slammed on the key, because of which we lost the bulb that protected it. So, now we built a new one from pvc pipe, a toilet floater, fiberglass and epoxy. Living on a sailing boat is freeing, addictive and feels infinite; like you can go anywhere. But, sometimes, its good to travel to the 'belly' of a country: where the water falls, the adventures are plenty and the burritos make you sick (lol).
