I test a back-up system for the autopilot (with mixed results). High winds at the end of my 180 NM leg from Ireland to the UK lead to a divert of 90 NM to France rather than entering a narrow port. I demonstrate my solo technique for gybing. Several dockings filmed, including a blooper.
Check out the Fits Everybody Collection at http://www.skims.com/svdelos #skimspartner This week's episode is a BIG one. Part 1 of our passage from Fiji to Australia is here, and when I think about what makes this sail special, I don't even really know where to begin. It’s our very last passage on Delos, and when we complete the 1500 mile journey it will mark a HUGE personal milestone: Kazza’s circumnavigation of planet Earth. I'm so freaking proud of her, and still just in disbelief at how this journey has unfolded over the course of the last 15 years. There’s a mix of emotions wrapped up in this sail… excitement, gratitude, nostalgia, and of course some sadness knowing this is the close of a chapter we’ll never forget. Through all the highs and lows, the wild seas and calm anchorages, you guys have been right here with us for all of it. Thank you for the bottom of our hearts for sharing in this journey with us and giving us so much love and support, none of this would be possible without you 💙 Get behind the scenes with exclusive bonus content, early & ad free videos, meet up invites, and more! https://patreon.com/svdelos Interested in getting your own Delos Explorer 53? https://svdelos.com/delos2 You can find all the camera gear we use, our must have cruising essentials, tools, recommended reading, safety gear, and more at our amazon storefront! https://svdelos.com/amazon Watch our 4 part docu-series: https://80northseries.com Protect yourself from the sun! https://svdelos.com/rashguards Support Our Videos- Send Us Love http://svdelos.com/beer http://patreon.com/svdelos We're completing our sail around the world, so there's plenty more to see! From what looked to be quite an unpromising weather forecast, wind-wise, Saturday in Barcelona actually turned out to be one of the most entertaining and enlightening training sessions that we’ve seen so far in the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup. Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli and NYYC American Magic were the only two teams on the water and with everyone fighting to sail in the same stretch of water, the inevitable happened and we got a first sight of boats lining up loosely against each other – the rules precluding actual two-boat racing. Nearly across the Malacca Strait, we get hammered by weather... https://www.sailingnandji.com Grab some Sailing Nandji merch and help support our channel https://sailingnandji-shop.com I recommend the coffee mug 👌 In this episode, making our second attempt at crossing the Malacca Strait to Indonesia, we are in a rush before the strong winds approach. Rounding the most western tip of Indonesia, we head south down the west coast of Sumatra and have some glorious days at sea. This passage is our biggest challenge yet as parents as we sail 1000 nautical miles as a family of 3. #sailing #sailingaroundtheworld #boatlife If you are enjoying our videos, sign up to Patreon to help support us, our production and the adventures. Visit www.rainmandesal.com for more information about our watermaker! Watch our installation of an AC Electric, High-Output Rainman Watermaker. For years we've been filling our sailboat's water tanks by ferrying jerry cans back and forth between our boat and shore-side spigots. Now that we have a Rainman Watermaker, we can produce 37 gallons per hour of fresh drinking water from the saltwater our sailboat is floating in. Being able to make our own water has dramatically improved our quality of life while living aboard and traveling on our sailboat. ~ Ben, Tambi, & Molly | "SAILBOATSTORY" Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE and join us every FRIDAY for a new episode! Steep waves with a short period can be the most uncomfortable conditions to drive in a boat so in this video we test the Prestige M48 in 1 - 2m of steep waves with a very short period between them. As I was spending the weekend in a Prestige 680 it was very surprising to discover the master cabin on this 50ft boat competes with the master on a 680! If you have Med cruising in mind this boat could be a very interesting option for you to consider! Caribbean too! Join me for this opportunistic test which came about thanks to the great team from Ancasta Marine in the Balearic Islands. After spending 4 days with Matt and his crew and understanding how well set up they are in this part of the world I would not hesitate to recommend speaking with these guys if Med cruising is on your bucket list! What an amazing destinaiton to escape the Southern Hemisphere winter and with a boat like this you have space and privacy for all your guests. Please Enjoy. The final instalments of our NEW Engine. https://www.sailingnandji.com In this episode of Sailing Nandji, our new engine Fang is finished off. We finish of the drive system installation installing the PSS Shaft seal, align the engine and install the Sigma Drive. The Sigma Drive in our eyes is a genious piece of engineering allowing and compensating for any alignment issues and protecting damage to our gearbox. We run our new 3 inch exhaust and this involves cutting a new hole in the sides of Nandji. There are 2 types of people that own boats... Ones that drill holes in them and the ones that dont! Thank you to everyone who has watched our videos and contributed to our new engine. It is all because of you legends we have been able to install this brand new engine and re-power Nandji. With all this boat work being complete our vessel is becoming indestructible as we get her ready for our next big trip across the Indian Ocean. With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing around the Pacific! We have just sailed 2000nm through Indonesia and have arrived to the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the next big adventure. Currently on the hard stand, we are re-powering and completing a major refit! We departed Australia in July 2017 and have since explored some amazing countries, met some beautiful people and experienced different cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World! Indian Ocean here we come!! In this episode, we sail from Terciera to Sao Miguel in the Azores. I (Khiara) decided to be captain for the day and as soon as we hoisted a sail, something went wrong! After dealing with the issue in a very captainly manner, we then sailed the 90 mile stretch between the islands in beautiful but calming conditions. We arrived in the morning and the next day set off to explore the island. Being a lover of rosy lee, our first stop was Cha Gorreana, (most likely) Europe's oldest and largest tea plantation. From there we set off discovering lakes, bubbling hot springs and beautiful island views as well as some of it's amusing inhabitants! A few day later, after finishing with the fun and frivolity of exploring a new island, we got down to some work... boat work! Which has been few and far between for the last few weeks so we actually kind of enjoyed doing it. We got to work installing a repaired radar that got delivered to the marina, and to see whether it finally worked and if we'd have radar capability in future! Trouble is- we were in a pandemic, had a university degree to finish, on a student budget, only had ever sailed dingies, oh and didn't have a boat. The dream seemed not only unrealistic but pretty insane. However, we worked hard, finished our degrees, worked as many hours as physically possible, saved with all our might, got experience and in March 2022 bought our very own sailboat, Teulu. Having little sailing experience and being a young couple, we have encountered a tonne of hurdles and made plenty of mistakes! but for every downfall, there has always been a reason to dust ourselves off and carry on. This is a Custom, Nova Scotia built commercial-style trawler meant to be used as a coastal cruiser. The builder, Deschamp and Jackson (now out of business due to owner age/health) based out of Lunenburg, typically built commercial vessels, and this boat is in a similar style to those fishing boats. Arabella makes her way through New York City! After setting the anchor in Glen Cove (Long Island, NY), Steve and Robin awake to an early alarm, like 4am-early, to time their arrival to the East River. Along the way, they enjoy incredible views of the Manhattan Bridge, Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, and more. For those who say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, Akiva is making great progress on his boat duties—which is much appreciated during poor weather days and long travel days. Upon making it to the night’s anchorage, Steve notices that the diesel heater has run out of fuel. Because paper towels are used to get it going, it’s common for debris to build up and clog the filter. After doing some cleaning, it turns out that the issue is the clogged inline fuel filter. Steve gets the heater up and running—and they all enjoy the heat after a long day in the cold. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! We continue our refit and start our engine for the second time since we bought Britaly. There was no cooling water in the exhaust, which we rectified with some threaded rod and a bit of vinegar. 🔔 SUBSCRIBE➜ http://bit.ly/SBYouTube⛵ (You can see FREE schematic diagrams of Volvo Penta marine engines here: https://www.marinepartseurope.com/en/volvo-penta-schematics-MarineDieselEngines.aspx) We also soundproof our boat engine compartment with some heat-resistant sound insulation we bought online at a very good price. This is a real time update of our refit, filmed a few days ago. We are no longer doing the daily vlogs: A) Because we challenged ourselves to be doing those for the 10 days before we launched, before the rudder problems scuppered those plans and made 10 days turn into more B) Because the videos were taking so much time to edit, export and upload that we weren't getting to bed until between 2 am and 4:30 am every day. Picking up trash on the beach and a little about me! Also, I originally had this video scheduled ahead of the boom repair, so the little P.S. at the end is irrelevant. With limited wifi though, it’s not worth it to me to delete that small tidbit and then upload again. I hope this isn’t confusing! In the future I will be doing a longer-term boom repair.

For additional details pertinent to this video please read the description below. The Prop is the second video in our Physics of Docking series. Jeff Merrill and Douglas Cochrane have created this series to share some insights into the various aspects and techniques that trawler owners need to know and can learn to improve docking. Filming for this video was done in San Diego, CA aboard a single engine Nordhavn 57 and we used the tender outboard motor for some close-up propeller feature discussions. We all know that the propeller drives us forward. In this video, we also show the details of how a propeller rotating underwater (slowly in forward or reverse) will affect the movement of your stern – essential to know when docking. The SCREW effect of your propeller turning pushes you forward. PROP WASH is the force of water turbulence created by the propeller that, when going slow in forward before gaining way, can be deflected by your rudder to move your stern in one direction making it easier to turn. PROP WALK is the “paddle wheeling” effect that moves your boat to one side in reverse. The direction your trawler walks depends on whether you have a left-hand or right-hand propeller. Propellers are designed to PUSH your trawler efficiently forward. They behave differently by PULLING your trawler through the water when you shift into reverse. On a long keel hull underbody shape like our Nordhavn 57, the rudder has much less effect on steering when you are travelling backwards since the propeller wash is directed towards the keel, not deflecting off the rudder. There is much more to discuss about propellers, like pitch, the number of blades, etc. With a better understanding of propeller effects, you can go out on your own trawler and experiment to see how your boat handles with some of these techniques. It’s fun to practice some new moves that will improve your close quarter handling and as you gain more confidence you will also have better control. Docking success requires finesse, patience, and a sound understanding of all the “tools” your trawler has available. Anything you can do to improve your docking skills is time well spent. We recommend you practice different maneuvers away from crowded marinas, in open water, to simulate different situations. Please keep watching as we have more to share in the PHYSICS OF DOCKING.
