White sand beaches in Playa del Carmen Quinta Avenida, also referred to in English as 5th Avenue, is the main tourist thoroughfare in Playa. It is a pedestrian only, cobblestone lined street which spans approximately 20 blocks. Along 5th Ave. you will find a variety of restaurants, bars, clubs, shopping opportunities and various overpriced services. In Playa, nearly everything starts from this street. If you have more local fare in mind, head a few avenues (they are counted in jumps of five, the next one besides fifth avenue is tenth avenue) inland and prices as well as the number of gringos tend to fall. Towards the south there is a gated community full of air bnb rentals and hotels called "playacar". If you like boxes, epoxy and a lot of head scratching as I go through the process of building this box, then this is for you!! Who knew that making a watertight box for my battery would be such a challenge!! All the wires, the battery, entry/exit points, lids, shelves!!!. It got quite complicated but I am hoping the end result will be a winner. After making a cardboard mockup, I get on with the real job. Using some 9mm ply I size and make the box and do the first bit of epoxying. The Volvo Ocean 60 (VO60) is a legendary class of offshore racing sailboat that played a crucial role in the evolution of the world’s most prestigious around-the-world yacht race - originally known as the Whitbread Round the World Race, later rebranded as the Volvo Ocean Race, and now known as The Ocean Race. In this episode, we sail aboard Wolfhound, a 1997 Volvo Ocean 60 based in The Port of Long Beach, Wilmington, California. Designed by Bruce Farr, Wolfhound was originally "Merit Cup", built by Martin Marine. She finished in 2nd place competing in the Whitbread 1997/1998 and skippered by Grant Dalton. In 19 knots of wind the vessel easily cruises at 14.3 knots and everyone aboard this social sail is having an extraordinary day. The Volvo Ocean 60 bridged the gap between the traditional heavy maxis and the more modern, faster VO70s. Many VO60s were sold post-race into private hands and are still racing or cruising. Capable of sustained speeds over 25 knots in the right conditions, the Volvo Ocean 60 was designed for extreme conditions in the Southern Ocean. All winches and sail controls are powered entirely by human effort and can withstand some of the most punishing legs in offshore racing. The Volvo Ocean 60 hull material is composite, made of carbon fiber and kevlar. The LOA is 64 feet and has a beam of 17' 2". The draft is 12'3" and has a carbon fiber mast that is 90 feet tall with 4 spreaders and a sail area of 1,937 sq ft upwind and 3,550 sq ft downwind. Let's go FAST!
