How did we start sailing? It's a question we get asked a lot. What was the process ? How did you go from working in London to sailing off into the sunset? Should I buy a boat now or later ? This episode I talk about where I came from, what inspired me, and what I really think you should do to get yourself sailing. I hope you find it interesting! Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. In this NEW Sailing Episode, we sail to glorious Kefalonia Island to discover beautiful anchorages, cultural towns, a 'ghost marina' and plenty of its infamous turtles! After a quick tour of what Argostoli has to offer, including walking the longest stone bridge in the world, we check out a stunning anchorage on the south of Kefalonia, where we get to swim (as nature intended!), paddle board and eat out at a lovely sea view taverna. We go for a walk at low tide on a drying reef before sailing to the Horizontal Waterfalls. We then motor Mirrool through the first of the horizontal waterfalls! Safely anchored in the inner bay, we enjoy awesome fishing, incredible wildlife, a freshwater stream, crazy whirlpools and an abseil down a cliff to view the tidal run of the second horizontal fall. Steve got roped into giving Karen a pedicure. With the weather being so cold and rainy we stayed inside our Catalina 42 getting ready for a New Year's Eve celebration. Weights were added to our exercise routine. It rained all day which was a great test for the rebedding of numerous ports and hatches using butyl rubber tape. Having a keel stepped mast is frequently a source of water leaks. We also had previously rebedded the mast collar bolts and added a sealant to the top of the mast boot. We're happy to report all this work paid off as we were high and dry inside during the torrential downpour. Started our New Year's Eve celebration by popping some Champagne, dancing and reflecting on 2020 at the end of the video. Won't win any awards for our singing, at least we tried. Happy New Year!!!!! Thanks to our subscribers! You really keep us going. About us: We sail, fish (haha), dance, fly the drone, sometimes wear bikinis, DIY, ride the motorcycle, listen to great music, and enjoy life. Having fun on a Catalina 42. Older sailors don't have a clew when to quit; they just keep lubing their winches. Oil Change! Carrera (Porsche 911 3.2 Liter) That time of year again and Shamoo (our 1986 Porsche 3.2 Carrera Cabriolet) get an oil change. I run you through all the steps and, as usual, I have a few DIY tips/tricks/hacks to make the job a little easier and help you get better results. Oil changes are an easy way to bond with your car and give you an opportunity to poke around and look for things that may need attention. What you’ll need: • Oil Filter: MAHLE OC54 (https://goo.gl/26HMfh) • Aluminum crush washer (https://goo.gl/MxXus1) • 10-12 Qts/L oil • At least a 4 gal oil collection pan/bucket. Two are best. • 15mm socket • Torque Wrench • Optional: Silicone grease, oil filler cap gasket, quick drain, magnetic drain plug (if you don’t have one already) So, I got a question about the drain plug... Do a search on Amazon: Fumoto FG7BN Engine Oil Drain Valve (22mm-1.5) https://goo.gl/zWGxzH Just be careful about clearance... They do make valves without the extension. I even saw a right angle version: Fumoto F309L Engine Oil Drain Valve (22mm-1.5) https://goo.gl/TFLQAE Drain Plug torque specs: 70nM (51.63 ft lbs) & 42nM (30.98 ft lbs) per Porsche Technical Specifications 84-87 (1st edition 12/86) page 63 If you don’t have access to a lift be super careful if you jack up the car. Use good and strong jack stands. Be safe! Please dispose of your oil responsibly. Auto parts stores and most oil change places will take it for free. Sailing to the Cabo Verde Islands with Atlantic Rally for Cruisers 2015. Its just a short stop before we set off across the Atlantic but most of the boats have repairs to do. We fix our roller furling jib and check out repair to rudders, forestays and more. Then take the ferry from Mindelo to visit nearby Sao Antao Island and provision at the excellent local markets. At the race party we learn we actually won our class in the rally and see just how small the costumes are for the Carnival! Then we set off for the big crossing! 2200 miles across to St Lucia.

Ride along on our sailboat! We dock it to fuel up at the Marina. Next, we anchor Mediterranean style at a local "party" island where we unload sound equipment. We turn up the volume and perform an impromptu concert for the unsuspecting island beach goers.

Following on from an OVERWHELMING response on our first episode, this sequel continues where we left off, and shows more insight in what we had to do to start to make this boat a home. We spend our first night on board, visit a flower market in Old Town Split, run into our first repair job and start upgrades. Follow along as we, a family of 4 from Australia move to Croatia onboard a Lagoon 450f Catamaran to follow our dreams and spend more quality time as a family. Just found us? A unique personality for us to get to know, and after almost 2 months, she’s told us SO much about herself as we try and get her ready to sail off into the horizon. One of the things she has informed us about is that her rigging needs replaced. Actually she showed us a cracked fitting, and Steve our friend the rigger told us the bad news, but we thought it wouldn’t be a bad idea to head his advice. So a couple weeks ago we made the investment, ordered the materials and pressed on with life as usual. Which mean’t more work. This sailing life makes you work for it, and sometimes there can seem to be a never-ending list of things to do before reaping the benefits of cruising. You have to try and find presence in every moment and that means sometimes stealing your love away from her computer and work, and doing something fun in the moment, celebrating the small victories. After all, happiness is in the details. We have just been kicked out of Haiti now too. So after being kicked out of Cuba 2 weeks ago, finding no refuge in Domincian Republic, Haiti is just the icing on the cake. Where can we go now? It seems hopeless but with some good skills and common sense we may finally find a place to stay, it is a pity that we have had no sleep for a week and that our skill and common sense level are at an all time low but blind stupid optimism has been know to work... How to communicate at sea is a question we get asked a lot. After spending two and a half years sailing offshore, around Europe, Across the Atlantic and the Caribbean, we have our thoughts on the matter. Do you really need an SSB in this day and age? What are the pitfalls? Do you need a sat. phone, or will a yoghurt pot and a ball of string be sufficient? Just what is a Yellowbrick? Just have a watch and see. Thanks so much for watching! Are you learning how to sail a dinghy? We have created 109 separate videos into 23 playlists on singlehanded as well as two man dinghy sailing to help you learn to sail. Our "how to" sailing videos align themselves to recognised training courses and our videos are designed to supplement these and we recommend that you attend a recognised training centre to fully learn to sail. Use our how to sail videos as an introduction before you go on a course or as a revision aid after you have been. Explore the channel fully to find the playlist that suits you, there will be one there! If you are a complete beginner we recommend you attend a sailing school for lessons as you will need the combination of on water practice and visual support to understand how to sail. Our aim is to help cement your learning and act as a refresher to what you are taught if you attended a course a while ago. Our videos are free to view and use complex camera, editing and production techniques to teach you how to sail a boat and bring the sport of sailing to life through easy to follow videos. Our playlist breaks down the process of learning how to sail a boat into small bite sized chunks to clearly demonstrate and help you understand what to do as you learn to sail. We cover the general topics needed to get you sailing in fair weather conditions.
Hi Everyone, For over twelve years we have needed a solution to our driveway's curb. Concrete and such can be thousands so we decided to give these Bridjit curb ramps a try. You can find them here: https://www.bridjit.com/ They are a cool, high-quality product made in the USA from recycled tires. Of course, I HAD to try my hand at painting them and we all know how paint and I get along... But, the ramps are an easy way to fix that horrible curb lift. Now to get to fixing that 996 chin spoiler, huh... #bridjit #curmramp #bridjitcurbramp Help support our channel and become a patron: https://www.patreon.com/heidiandfrannysailing Amazon Store Page https://www.amazon.com/shop/heidiandfrannysgarage Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/Heidi-and-Frannys-Garage-1902530353317503/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/heidiandfrannysgarage/?hl=en Twitter:https://twitter.com/HeidiFranny Website: https://heidiandfrannysailing.com/ The Cameras and Equipment we use: Main Shooter: Panasonic Lumix G85 (https://goo.gl/geSFpN) Main Shooter Lens: (https://goo.gl/RsHkkF) Main Shooter Microphone: Rode RodeLink FM Wireless Filmmaker System https://goo.gl/aQsmrg Car Cameras: Sony FDR-X3000 (https://goo.gl/P6XdYZ) GoPro Hero 5 black (https://goo.gl/kjjr31) Car Mounts: Fat Gecko Camera and Camcorder Mount (https://goo.gl/zqCHvT) Fat Gecko Camera Mount (https://goo.gl/AXQAr6) Fat Gecko Mount (https://goo.gl/RhyXYT) Drone: DJI Mavic Pro and Kit (https://goo.gl/jQbk9V) Stabilizer for mobile phones and action cams: DJI Phone Camera Gimbal OSMO MOBILE, Black (https://goo.gl/Acr1jg) Disclaimer: Due to factors beyond the control of “Heidi and Franny’s Garage”, We cannot guarantee against improper use or unauthorized modifications of this information. “Heidi and Franny’s Garage” assumes no liability for property damage or injury incurred as a result of any of the information contained in this video. Stiamo vivendo un momento difficile... così ho pensato di rifugiarmi sulla mia piccola e bella BARCA A VELA con il mio GATTO Jingjok che adora il mare. Vado quindi a vivere in barca!

Last week we left Shelter Bay Marina and collected ourselves by resting after our first emotional passage, fixing some deck leaks, and provisioning at Linton Bay Marina before setting sail for the San Blas Islands. These islands are highly spoken of by many cruisers we’ve talked to, some of which arrived with the intentions of only staying a little while, and not leaving for 2, 3, or sometimes 5 years. The archipelagos location is about 70 miles northeast of Shelter Bay, and the 340 or more islands can be cruised year round without the threat of hurricanes. There is however an abundance of powerful rainy season storms from around June-December, and they can pack a lot of lightning which does hit sailboat masts and can destroy the mast itself, electronics, and potentially blow a hole in the hull, sinking your boat. Nonetheless, cruisers continue assuming this risk with the reward of living amongst these beautiful islands and people. San Blas is home to the indigenous Kuna Indians, the G pronounced as a K, at around 55,000 in population. They have lived amongst these islands for hundreds of years and call their lands Guna Yala. The name San Blas being given by invading Spanish conquistadors in the 17th century, and therefore they are not fond of the name. The islands are protected by a barrier reef, that stops the swell from destroying the low lying islands. Each island can be inhabited by 1 or more families depending on the islands size. Their society is matrilineal, with the women controlling the household, money, and often choosing their own husbands. They live off their lands and the ocean, and have very limited technology powered by propane, basic solar power and battery storage. The men typically fish for food from dugout canoes with or without masts and sails, and sell some of their catch to make money. The women typically learn to sew Molas which are hand stitched through multiple layers of colored fabrics making beautiful traditional art and selling them to make money. Usually cruisers stop here after sailing across the Atlantic Ocean, through the Caribbean, and then continue on towards the Panama Canal, to transit and begin their Pacific Ocean adventure. It just so happens that this beautiful place will be OUR shakedown cruising ground to learn how to sail our new boat, operate all of its systems, see what breaks, and hopefully have some fun while were at it. It’s late November, during the change of seasons and the rainy season storms should be calming down. We are carefully navigating our way into the first anchorage and although we are nervous about anchoring Boundless for the first time, it looks promising. Lets see how it goes! Enjoy! After a night anchored by the Statue of Liberty we move the boat to an anchorage in Coney Island Creek with better access to shore. We explore New York City for a day and then head back out to sea. The wind is either non existent or against us for this entire passage. The seas gets rough. After thirty hours of beating to windward, we finally find refuge in Montauk. We row ashore for some much needed R&R and then its back to boat projects.
