Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. We have just sailed 2000nm through Indonesia and have arrived to Malaysia to complete major boat work, ready for the next big adventure. We departed Australia 18 months ago and have since explored some amazing countries, met some beautiful people and experienced different cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it! For 8 weeks we during the Christmas period, we were in Australia. Released to you finally (after we got our hard drives back) is our camping trip to Straddie (aka Stradbroke Island). What was initially meant to be a short one night stop to explore this beautiful sand island, we extended for a further few days; getting lost (literally) on beaches while four wheeled driving, hiking to remote lakes as well as swimming and attempting to surf in the clear water! There's nothing for me to sand or paint right now, so it must be time to sew! Two big items we need done before leaving the marina are making a new mainsail cover and an awning for the cockpit. Tackling the hardest one first, I went with the sail cover. Since we were starting from scratch and yours truly was doing the work, we decided to go with a stack pack, where the cover never fully comes off, but instead is unzipped to allow the sail in and out. I've never attempted anything like this before, but luckily Sailrite makes a very helpful step by step video on building one. We're making a few tweaks, so ours won't be exactly the same, but it has helped me with the most important parts. Also in this episode, we spend a little quality time with our friends Jeremy and Courtney of s/v Teho. We'd gotten to know them at the marina just after the new year, and were now able to reconnect after they've arrived back from the Bahamas. Tonga is one of the few places in the world where you are actually allowed to swim with whales. Although we had seen many Humpbacks surface close to our boatwhile sailing, it proved impossible for one of us to jump in while the other handled the boat. Either the wave conditions were too rough or we were too far offshore. So we booked a whale tour in the Ha'apai island group of Tonga and Wow! What an experience. The operators knew where to find them. Knew when they could approach safely and a guide showed us how to swim out to them (since the boat can only get so close). We ended up jumping in several times and swimming out to them. One such encounter ended with a mom and a calf frolicking the the warm, shallow waters of Tonga. I'm pretty good at making videos, sailing I've still got a lot to learn. So I go out and sail as much as I can. The wind is always present in Lanzarote, so it's great practice. Sailing around the world on a mass-production yacht Bavaria 55 Cruiser in my seventh season. This is my honest review and experience with all the challenges regarding failing products and building quality. How is my real-life experience versus repeated misinformation, rumors, and parrots repeating BS from small sailors? Why do I love wide cockpits and will this destroy the secondhand market for old-school-designed yachts? Catamarans can be expensive but a modern production yacht with a wide body and huge cockpit can be a good compromise. I am busting some myths and even explaining how it's possible to build a Bavaria 55 Cruiser for a third of what high-end competitors are selling for. Is it still worth it and is it value for money? Or is this not a safe yacht on which to circumnavigate the world? I believe this video will surprise many as based on my experience things are not always what people like to believe. On a Monday morning in February 2021, the Pelagic 77 was launched at the KM Yachtbuilders yard. Her official name will be Vinson of Antarctica and she will be added to the charter fleet of Skip Novak. But, the yacht will also be used as an educational tool to learn children from Chile to sail and to provide a location for students, guests and scientists to learn more about sailing, the ocean, marine life, etc. Designed by Tony Castro and built by KM Yachtbuilders she is a strong, sturdy and though lady who will keep her guests and crew safe and comfortable while making journeys in high latitudes. Many have replied about the rudders and draft of the keel, please see below: There is a centerboard inside the stub keel, which is retracted in the video, thus not shown. The draft is 2.15-4.30m. Please read Skip Novak's reply about the rudder concerns here: "We must acknowledge that this vessel is more multi-purpose (sail training and general charter and owner’s use) than Pelagic Australis which is purely dedicated to high latitudes. Having said that VOA can certainly navigate in the same areas as PA both north and south, but using a bit more care with the situations she finds herself in. Mainly, not having a fully lifting keel is a big factor in this regard. Yes, the rudders are not protected by a skeg. But this is not a problem in motoring through brash ice with care. And note the rudders are close to the center line, unlike some yachts with twin rudders breaking the waterline, which clearly would not be acceptable. But can we become frozen in for the winter with this arrangement? – No. That was never in the planning. We have never had the need for propeller protection. In fact, I don’t believe in it as if you ‘cage’ the prop, ice can actually get stuck in the cage rather than float up and away from the propeller."

Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. After a period of fast sailing, the winds are easing, with average boat speeds now dropping below 20 knots. Boris share his congratulations for the leaders, as they clock in more record breaking days, and reflects on his "race within a race". The Hobie Guardian retractable transducer mount leaves the sonar beam completely unobstructed for ultimate performance when using a side imaging transducer.
