Barrett and I leave Mission Bay in our sailboat and head to La Jolla on a calm and smooth Saturday morning. We spy on another (*3rd) Mako shark outside Mission Jetty and make our way north to the La Jolla kelp beds. A light wind puts us on a perfect ‘Sail Drift’ through the kelp for a little bit of peaceful fishing. I jump in the water to check out the underwater jungle of the La Jolla kelp. Vlog #35 We sail from La Cruz in Banderas Bay to Yelapa. Its a beautiful little village that's only accesible by boat. We pulled in and we're greeted by a panga who led us to a mooring ball. His families restaurant there is Fanny's. The waves were too big there to take the dinghy in so the pangas rip you right up onto shore. We took a trek to the closer, smaller waterfall first, which was beautiful and had a tiny restaurant for drinks and snacks upon arrival. Travs decided to make the hike barefoot and stepped in one million horse poos along the way. The next day we got the panga to take us in again and this time we opted to hike to the farther waterfall. we are walked all the way through the village and crossed and few rivers. after about an hour we finally arrived. We thought we'd have this serene place all to ourselves but upon arrival there was a big group of skinny dippers who were mostly male, and by mostly i mean ALL. hahaha no worries though they were kind and courteous and we made small talk and then swam in the freezing cold waterfall water. We arrive onshore after a short trip in our dinghy and can't see more than 10 metres due to fog. Our home is out there somewhere at anchor, will we find it? Tune in to find out what happens. The Brittany coast is shrouded in patchy fog for days slowing down our progress, but as ever we make the most of it and enjoy the local sights, sounds and cafes! One of our favorite features is the excellent ventilation since we mostly live as "hookers" (aka at anchor) where the boat automatically turns into the wind so we stay cool and we don't need to battle mold. We also have starlink for easy off-grid life. Our 2400 watt solar panel array also means we rarely need to run an engine to charge our batteries. ABOUT US: We saved for a our future boat, sold everything that we owned, and shipped the rest in a container to Cape Town, South Africa. We then flew there and explored South Africa by way of a safari and touring Cape Town before moving aboard our boat. We then sailed to Saint Helena, Ascension Island, Fernando de Naronha (Brazil), Martinique, Sint Maarten (Dutch and French side), the US Virgin Islands (Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas), the British Virgin Islands (Anegada, Norman Island, Jost van Dyke, and Anegada), The Bahamas (Inagua, Crooked Island, Long Island, George Town, Staniel Cay, the Exumas, and Eleuthera). We then sailed back to the United States, making landfall in Cape Canaveral, Florida. From there our destinations are endless! Both Dennis and Ann grew up military brats with Army fathers. Dennis (the Colonel) served 30 years in the US Army and his retirement pension helped us retire in our 50s. Ann (the ship's Captain) wrote Test Automation in Python and Java. Dennis and Ann met on Match.com where Ann had in her profile "Do you want to sail the world with me?" Ann easily brought Dennis into sailing, and he loved the GTFOplan of retiring early and sailing the world. After many years of saving, living on one income but earning two, and cutting back on everything possible, they saved enough to buy a Balance 482. This week’s episode takes us from the Isle of Harris back to the mainland, calling first into Shieldaig near Gairloch before heading to Plockton. After a quiet night there, we set off at 6am for a day sail south — timing our departure carefully to catch the tides at Kyle Rhea, where currents can run up to 9 knots against you if you get it wrong. The forecast warned of rough Atlantic weather sweeping in, and it quickly lived up to its promise. What began as a lively sail with 20+ knots of wind soon turned into something tougher. As we closed in on Ardnamurchan Point, seas grew over 2 metres with waves coming from two directions, winds gusted 30–35 knots, and everything started to go wrong: Mast leaks & chain plates dripping below deck Guard rail coming undone Boat hook nearly lost overboard Headsail sheet tangled & tender almost pulled away Bow burying under confused seas After 12+ exhausting hours at sea, we finally turned on the engine to punch into the big waves and push round the point into shelter. 14 hours later, battered and wet but safe, we tied back up in Plockton — very ready for rest (and a well-earned curry!).
