In this episode of liveaboard sailing, we experience one of the most intense storms we’ve ever faced while living aboard our sailboat. In our last video, we made the call to pull anchor and sail directly into a storm, pushing hard to reach the marina before an even more severe weather system arrived. As full-time sailors preparing to sail around the world, we knew this decision could make all the difference. What we didn’t expect was just how extreme the next day would become. Less than 24 hours later, the marina was slammed by a severe storm cell with winds clocked at 75 knots and massive hail measuring 15 centimetres in diameter. Boats surged violently against dock lines, visibility dropped to zero, and the sound of hail and wind was deafening and relentless. This was no ordinary storm — this was extreme weather that tested every liveaboard sailor, every cleat, and every line. Once the storm finally passed, reality set in. This episode takes you through the post-storm damage assessment, as we inspect our sailboat, check rigging, lines, and surrounding vessels, and process what just happened. The adrenaline fades, the exhaustion hits, and the raw emotion of surviving a major storm — becomes impossible to hide. But this video is also about something bigger than damage and destruction. It’s about the sailing community coming together. Neighbours checking on neighbours. Sailors helping sailors. Sharing tools, lines, advice, and support. This is one of the most powerful parts of the liveaboard sailing lifestyle — the unspoken bond that forms when boats and people go through extreme conditions together. We’re getting ready to sail from the UK to Europe as Magnus sits his CEVNI exam, tackles wiring breakthroughs and sorts out last‑minute boat jobs on Little Nutshell. A storm rolls in while we wait on lithium batteries and solar panels before our North Sea crossing. We leave Suffolk Yacht Club and head for Shotley Marina to pick up the solar panels we’ve been waiting weeks for. Late that night Magnus goes online to sit his CEVNI exam. It’s not an easy test but he passes first go, which means we’re now legal to sail in Europe. All our i’s are dotted and our t’s crossed. It feels good. Magnus does a beer review for Old Midnight Hen while a storm brews outside Little Nutshell. He also tackles a mysterious leak on board. Nothing seems obviously wrong, so he swaps a few parts around and it appears to fix the problem for now. It’s time to do the paperwork for leaving the UK and sailing to Belgium. Magnus files our departure papers online and it’s all starting to feel very real and very exciting. He then gets stuck into the boat’s wiring and finally works out what’s what. His chook scratchings turn into a proper wiring diagram. We hit a dilemma with the beautiful wine bottle holder on the boat. We’ll never use it, but removing it means cutting into a lovely piece of the interior. Do we repurpose the space for a big drawer or leave it as is and lose valuable storage? We haven’t quite yet made up our minds what we will do, as this is a beautiful boat and we don’t want to destroy it. We’ll see. Time will tell which way we go with this. We’re still waiting on the lithium batteries and solar panels from Renogy. They’re not great at communicating and the delivery is well past the published timeframe. It’s frustrating because we can’t cross the North Sea until everything arrives. Winter weather windows are few and far between, so the delays are holding us up. The new lithium batteries finally arrive and Magnus gets to work installing them and sorting out the battery box. The inverter will have to wait for another day when he knows exactly where it should go. We still wait for the solar panels to arrive. As always, thanks for watching. It's Prime Time! We've finally reached a point where we can start hitting sections with primer and paint. We've sanded about 1/2 of the boat and are ready to bring on the brushes! The quart can of Interlux 1026 sealer primer only went far enough to do the center section of the center hull and a small portion of the front section of the port side. We've purchased a couple more quarts and will continue on. Our neighbor did mention laying fiberglass down.....so we'll see what we come up with next.
