This is the second video in our two-part Christmas series, where we take time out to bring you up to date with our sailing journey. Some of our family have arrived on the Island of Crete to spend Christmas with us after their flights home to South Africa were cancelled due to Covid red-listing. Our friends, Maryke and Nick, also had their flights to SA cancelled. They join us as we celebrate together in true South African style, with a braai (barbecue) on the beach on Christmas Eve. There are family members missing from our celebrations, and they are greatly missed. We are grateful for our health and for the love of friends and family on this glorious Christmas Eve. Kathy gets stung by jellyfish after a daring swim in the chilly sea. O trabalho é fruto de dez anos de expedições do autor em paragens remotas do bioma Pantanal e suas nascentes, nos planaltos ao redor. "De longe ou de perto, as fotografias desse ensaio jamais prescindem do fio condutor líquido: a água está presente em todas as imagens, assim como em tudo o que tem vida", explica Candisani, que se tornou referência na fotografia documental. No momento em que relatório científico do Mapa Biomas aponta uma perda de mais da metade da superfície aquática no Pantanal, o livro TERRA D’ÁGUA PANTANAL traz uma ampla documentação visual sobre o sistema vivo sustentado pela água no Bioma. As imagens poéticas da riqueza biológica impressionante escondida sob as águas que se vão, conferem contornos ainda mais dramáticos aos números da ciência. “A água molda a paisagem e controla a vida na maior planície inundável do planeta. O Pantanal pode ser imensidão líquida ou seca. De uma estação à outra, da estiagem às chuvas, seus campos ressequidos se transmutam em jardins submersos densos, coloridos e habitados por miríades de peixes. Depois voltam a secar, numa dinâmica perene que é a essência desse incomparável espaço natural”, descreve o autor na abertura do livro. Arte e documento se misturam em proporções generosas nas 75 fotografias da obra, boa parte delas feitas em incursões no período da cheia, quando os rios transbordam e o Pantanal vira um mar interior. Poucos se aventuram a explorar a região nessa época de estradas submersas e profusão de mosquitos. Mas esse aguaceiro repleto de vida foi exatamente a inspiração e ponto de partida para Candisani. “Nos últimos 10 anos passei muito tempo submerso nos domínios de jacarés, sucuris, piranhas e ariranhas, sempre a curta distância desses animais. Também voei a bordo de monomotores buscando entender, do alto, os contornos e padrões gerais das paisagens aquáticas invisíveis ao nível do solo. As fotografias deste trabalho nasceram desse esforço de interpretação”, completa. Além do ensaio fotográfico, TERRA D’ÁGUA PANTANAL traz textos de Luciano Candisani. "Imagens e palavras em favor de uma mensagem clara: a água é a essência do Pantanal – e da vida", diz ele. O projeto conta ainda com uma Edição de Colecionador - 50 exemplares numerados acondicionados em caixa de tecido, acompanhados por uma print fine art 33X24 cm certificada — patrocinada pela Vento Leste e doada para o Documenta Pantanal. Την επόμενη μέρα, ενώ περνούσε από το Κάβο Ντόρο, ο καιρός επιδεινώθηκε και ο καπετάνιος αποφάσισε να καταφύγει στον κοντινότερο κόλπο, μετά από προσπάθειες να αγκυροβολήσει στο νότιο υπήνεμο τμήμα της βραχονησίδας Πάτροκλος, λόγω των ισχυρών ανέμων που επικρατούσαν, προσέκρουσε με την αριστερή του πλευρά στα βράχια και βυθίστηκε. Όλοι οι επιβάτες κατάφεραν να βγουν στην στεριά σώοι.Το ναυάγιο βρίσκεται κομμένο σε δύο μέρη. Το κομμάτι της πρύμης είναι όρθιο με αριστερή κλήση, ενώ το υπόλοιπο της πλώρης από το ναυάγιο βρίσκεται με την αριστερή πλευρά του στο βυθό. Η πλώρη του είναι σε βάθος 17 μέτρων και η πρύμνη σε βάθος 30 μέτρων, με όλο το ενδιάμεσο τμήμα του να είναι σκόρπιες λαμαρίνες μιας και το πλοίο είχε ξεκινήσει να κόβετε για σκραπ. Η πρόσβαση στην περιοχή του ναυαγίου γίνεται μόνο με σκάφος. Cargo ship Kyra Leni sunk in 1978 next to Patroklos island due to bad weather and in the process to find safe anchorage. Today its one of the favourite dive sites for many divers since the shallow depth and the relatively intact bow and stern parts of the ship allow for a relaxing wreck dive. The bow is situated at 18 meters depth whilst the stern at a depth of approximately 30 meters. In between various parts of the wreck are scattered on the seabed and the dive can continue with a nice wall dive. After waking up in Grenada and checking the weather report, the hurricane was trending North and moving to our current location. We decided it would be wise to move again and head further South to Trinidad and Tobago. Now that we've stopped moving for a while, we found ourselves a good mooring at Gili Asahan and started to work on some boat projects. This episode is mostly boat work, with a bit of good diving in between. Jobs include: - Replacing door sweep strips in the salon sliding door. Metal sliders had been used, and due to their exposure zone we're replacing them with plastic ones. This job took a whole week! - Replacing the proximity sensor for the lift platform; - Inspecting a troublesome oil pressure sensor on the Yamaha outboard motor; - Replacing a turning block on the line that drives the swim platform....it exploded! - Programming in our CZone network to create a Night Navigation mode in which button lights at the flybridge are dimmed to preserve night vision. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978.
