(joli euphémisme , pour ne pas effrayer le marin, figurant dans le guide nautique du secteur)-. ! Nous nous sommes engagés dans le canal Messier avec un vent portant soutenu (25 à 35 N) qui nous a propulsé tambour battant sous génois seul, dans la Caleta Point Lay. Superbe refuge surmonté d'une extraordinaire cascade.

Here is the lower level (for 4 x 120Ah batteries) of our watertight battery box, part of our conversion to Vida being a fully electric, zero carbon footprint boat. The upper layer is also shown roughly in position with 4 x 300Ah batteries. Two and a half years ago, when we bought Vida, she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel, and paraffin equipment as well as all the plumbing and electrics. We have composting toilets, are installing an electric motor and all electric cooking. We are fitting a huge solar array and probably a wind generator. We have replaced all the windows, removed all the headlining and more. We are replacing all the standing rigging with Dyneema synthetic rigging. This is the biggest sustainability project of our lives as we prepare for a retirement when we want to cruise the world using zero fossil fuels on a very low budget. Sunday was an awesome day full of sailing and boat projects! Started the day by checking the impeller to make sure it was ok and in good shape. With the guidance of both my dad and Rich I was able to get it taken apart and put back together fairly easily. For me, this was a great accomplishment given I’m not the most mechanically sound person. Oh, and the impeller was in good shape. Next we backed the boat out and took her over to the fuel and pump out dock to top off the fuel as well as do a pump out. Let me just say, pump outs are pretty gross. I’ll just leave it at that lol. After that adventure, it was time to hit the open water and do some sailing. Once out on the water, Rich went full sailing instructor and school was in session. Along with our usual sailing exercises (tacking, keeping a straight course, not letting the sails luff, etc.) Rich taught me how to reef both the main sail and jib. We were actually having good strong puffs of wind so the reefing experiences came in handy. All in all it was once again a great day out on the boat. A lot of fun and learning as usual. Anytime I’m able to get the boat and sail it’s a great day. We were out on the water sailing for about 5 hours I believe. Big thank you to both my Dad and Rich for all their help and knowledge. Over the last year and a half they’ve taught me so much.

From new experiences to meeting incredible people along the way, our life has been enriched in so many ways and makes us ever so more appreciative of our environment and the footprint we leave behind. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore.
