Join “Moments in Time” for the third and longest leg of this odyssey as we depart our night’s anchorage behind the derelict concrete ships in Kiptopeke, VA and continued our voyage out into the Atlantic Ocean for our overnight coastal passage north, destined for the Delaware Bay. Again, we saw some choppy waters but experienced favorable winds despite the rains. The next morning saw some sunshine and spent most of the day under the large screacher sail before dropping the anchor for the night in the protected breakwaters of Cape Henlopen at the mouth of the Delaware Bay. Delmarva stands for Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia and often refers to the eastern peninsula surrounded by the Chesapeake Bay to the west and south, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and the Chesapeake and Delaware (C&D) canal to the north. Circumnavigating the Delmarva Peninsula is a fun voyage to plan as you have to account for weather, winds, waves, tides, anchorages, various courses, and adventure. We also have starlink for easy off-grid life. Our 2400 watt solar panel array also means we rarely need to run an engine to charge our batteries. ABOUT US: We saved for a our future boat, sold everything that we owned, and shipped the rest in a container to Cape Town, South Africa. We then flew there and explored South Africa by way of a safari and touring Cape Town before moving aboard our boat. We then sailed to Saint Helena, Ascension Island, Fernando de Naronha (Brazil), Martinique, Sint Maarten (Dutch and French side), the US Virgin Islands (Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas), the British Virgin Islands (Anegada, Norman Island, Jost van Dyke, and Anegada), The Bahamas (Inagua, Crooked Island, Long Island, George Town, Staniel Cay, the Exumas, and Eleuthera). Day 5 at the ISAF Sailing World Cup was medal race day & Australian Sailing came away with winning one Gold, two Silver and one Bronze medal at the ISAF Sailing World Cup Weymouth & Portland - the 2012 London Olympic Games venue. The four medals concluded a strong regatta for Australian Sailing on the road to the 2016 Rio Olympic Games after nine boats had qualified for seven of the top-ten Medal Races. Australian Sailing Team’s Jason Waterhouse (NSW) and Lisa Darmanin (NSW) took home the Gold Medal in the Nacra 17 and added another win for Australia in this new mixed-gender multi-hull boat class, which will premier on the Rio 2016 Olympic program. It is the second World Cup win for cousins Waterhouse and Darmanin, after a gold medal at the ISAF Sailing World Cup in Melbourne in December and a bronze medal at the ISAF Sailing World Championships in September last year. Australian Sailing teammates and Olympic silver medallists Darren Bundock (NSW) and Nina Curtis (NSW) made it two medals for Australia in this boat class by winning Bronze. World Champions Mat Belcher (QLD) and Will Ryan (QLD) won the silver medal in the Men’s 470 behind the USA, capping off a long week of racing. In a nail-biting medal race, Australian Sailing Team’s youngest sailor, 19-year old Matthew Wearn (WA), added another silver in the Laser, beating teammate and World #1 Tom Burton (NSW), who finished the regatta in sixth. What? Another reef? Yes, Don gets even more nervous as we approach yet another reef for me to indulge my snorkeling self on. Don sets new wet suit trend in this clip and is left rather exposed! Wistari Reef is located adjacent to Heron Island, a beautiful spot indeed. Unfortunately, as Heron Island is a private island we are unable to go ashore there and explore although we would have loved to. Sailing boats and non paying visitors are not welcome here. We managed to pick up the only public moring there, which was a huge relief to The Don. We had 2 nights there and the coral and fish were great! I really enjoyed snorkeling in the shallow waters, where the coral was still colourful and it was like an underwater garden of sorts. Fish were good but a little sparse, water clarity was good. Didn't see any turtles but did see a reef shark, but didn't capture on film unfortunately. Enjoy us on our travels with Sailing Bakali
