It's time to leave Malta for now and head east. We're embarking on a multi-day passage that will take us to Sicily and along the heel of the boot of Italy before we cross over to Greece. We're enjoying some lovely sailing conditions in Sicily. The weather is perfect, and the sea is just beautiful. We drop into Syracuse to stock up on provisions and pick up some parcels. Syracuse is a stunning place with so much history and charm. We're looking forward to exploring it in Autumn but for now, we get everything we need for the next leg of our journey. With our supplies restocked and parcels collected, we're ready to continue our journey east to Greece.

With six months to go before the infamous single handed Vendée Globe Race around the world the focus is drawing in on the IMOCA fleet, both for spectators and the solo sailors themselves. And as the clock counts down there were two very important transatlantic races starting with the CIC Transat. Formerly the OSTAR, this is a race with a long and often brutal history. We put into Caneel Bay on St John, USVIs for the night, anchored just off of Honeymoon Beach outside of the main harbor of Cruz Bay. Was a beautiful calm evening and night, but overnight the reversing currents decided to throw us a little curve ball! Woke up the next day to continue on our journey, but to find the mooring ball line had become entangled in our keel.. oops! I dropped a GoPro in the water to survey the situation, as for me to get in the water when sailing alone would not be prudent, given that as soon as I freed the boat from the mooring ball pennant, it would immediately start to drift downwind and in the current that caused the problem in the first place.. and I'm sure our downwind neighbours would not be thrilled to look up and see 'Sophisticated Lady' drifting down on their bow with the captain in the water! Lol Luckily the problem was not severe, but difficult to solve on my own.. that's when a fellow sailor on a small powerboat entered the scene yelling at me from the bow.. I couldn't make out what he was saying at first, but then heard "LOVE THE VIDEOS!"... Ah.. a Youtube fan, Lol... Great to hear, but not the best time for a chat.. but then he quickly saw that I was having a problem with the mooring ball, and without question or hesitation he was in the water with his mask and snorkel to help assess and rectify the situation. Within minutes 'Sophisticated Lady' was free of her bind, and we were on our way again! Little things like this make me very grateful to be part of such a helpful community.. boaters are like none other, if you are in trouble or need, they will always be at the ready to assist in any way they can... so to this fellow mariner I say "Thanks Rob!" Cutting a big hole into our deck, we crossed our fingers and hoping it was all done properly. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. On Wednesday 4th December, the IMOCA Skippers' 24th day at sea, the deepening Indian Ocean depression is on the leaders today in the Vendée Globe, with Charlie Dalin on MACIF Santé Prevoyance and Sébastien Simon on Groupe Dubreuil unexpectedly deciding to ride out the southern option. We take a look as to why this option may well work for them. Following on from a number of questions in the comments, we also take a look at the Antarctic Exclusion Zone (AEZ) and what penalties apply if one of the boats strays into it. In this episode the Parlay Revival crew sail their hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 from Curacao, to Aruba, where they go on the hunt for waves, and score a few days of fun surf in the north of the island! While there they also dive on an old shipwreck called the "Antilles". But always learning, they mistakenly anchor a little too close to the surf, which rolls them around for a while before snapping their anchor bridal, where they are forced to relocate a little further away from the surf. They then prepare for their longest passage to date, to Colombia!! SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged 2012 Lagoon 450 Catamaran bought in Tortola, BVI at the beginning of 2018. We left the beautiful Ronde Island to sail north to Carriacou. A few days after arriving, we arranged to catch up with a new friend, Trevor Robertson, who has many sailing accomplishments under his belt and who we have persuaded to spare his time for an interview with Adam (coming soon). Before a further catch up could be arranged, we spot some bad weather coming towards the southern leeward islands (near where we are) and there is lots of uncertainty in the forecasting models of what will transpire. Tropical storm Gonzalo had formed. Boats are hauling out, heading to mangrove and generally preparing for a hurricane all around us. We start to realize that maybe our previous two years of good luck in avoiding hurricanes, has started to run out and we may have to face some bad weather. Nos recuperamos de los anteriores días después de romper el botalón, perder el piloto en plena noche y nos toca afrontar los problemas del motor. Comenzamos el episodio lidiando con el problema de la bacteria del motor que nos aparece por tercera vez en este viaje, esta vez está completamente obstruído desde el depósito de diesel. Indagamos en como desmontar las mangueras y acceder a la salida del depósito, con suerte conseguimos desmontarlo y con cables de acero y soplando ir sacando poco a poco el "moco" del gasoil que no permitía que el diesel llegase al motor. Tras recuperarnos del último día intenso, nos toca celebrar en pleno océano los reyes, David se ofrece voluntario a actuar como rey y sacamos los regalos a pasear. El Capitán durante la travesía hizo fotos de Polaroid y las dejó en el salón para que las vieran al amanecer, aunque eso no aparece en el vídeo, David y Carlos nos dan unos buenos regalos de para el recuerdo de esta auténtica aventura. La felicidad vuelve a estar a bordo de Nomadas del Mar. Nos llegan las primeras tormentas del Atlántico, esta en forma de "squalls", la denominación que se le da a las típicas nubes del Caribe que aceleran el viento y dejar una buena tromba de agua. Esta vez nos viene bien para endulzar el barco, ya que desde Canarias el la cubierta ha estado llena de sal y no había caído ni una gota de agua. las nubes vienen acompañadas de un doble arcoiris que nos deja una imagen única. El viento, como estaba en la previsión comienza a aumentar, nos ponemos en los 25 nudos mantenidos y durante la noche se mantiene en los 30, la ola comienza a hacerse más y más grande. La travesía se vuelve más incómoda y no nos permite descansar mucho, arrastramos cansancio de la última noche, ya que fue dura. Aún así seguimos haciendo millas y haciendo que el barco corra, cada vez estamos más cerca y estamos ya habituados a la rutina en el mar, los días pasan navegando rumbo al Caribe. Lo que no nos esperábamos es lo que ocurrió esa misma última noche del episodio, un "squall" lo cambió todo, tenemos un problema muy serio y entramos en modo supervivencia. We are expecting a new little froth baby very soon and this means we have some difficult decisions to make. Being pregnant overseas is difficult enough and then throw a pandemic in the mix and you have a recipe for hurdles and road blocks. We have tried our best to prepare for the future in as many ways as we can and we feel that we have made the right decision for us and our new baby. What are we going to do and where are we going to have our new baby? Watch and find out! With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed and our home ended up on the reef. We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! Ready to sail across the Indian Ocean, we were only days away from leaving when the pandemic begun closing countries around us... We are stuck for now, but enjoying the slower pace! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World!
