Episode 024 There are so many things to see and do in Rarotonga, BUT visiting Te Ara, The Cook Islands Museum of Cultural Enterprise, should be on your list of top 5 things to do in Rarotonga. We decided to see the Te Ara Museum on our way to Adam's kitesurfing lesson. Not really sure what to expect, we thought we'd just take a look. Instead we were presented with one of those unique moments where we were fortunate enough to meet Stan Wolfgramm, one of the founders of the museum. Stan is a natural story teller and it was clear to us within moments of meeting him that Stan is truly interested in people and the environment. We were so captivated listening to Stan that we never made it into the museum display. We visited the museum the next day, and as we walked through the display, a story of the Cook Islands unfolded which led you through the history of both its people and its environment. There is an art to telling a story and Stan and the Te Ara Museum definitely have this art. So much thought had been put into the display to tell the story of the Cook Islands and each piece thoughtfully placed with a meaning and story of its own. We visited the museum three times, each time learning something new and taking a different message how with us. No matter how many times you visit the Te Ara museum, you will learn something new with each visit. There's many different facets to the museum, including teaching and supporting sustainable practices and business development within the community. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore.
