Now that summer is coming to a close, it’s time for us to start winterizing our homebuilt wooden sailboat for the cold weather to come. Over-wintering in Newfoundland—on a sailboat, nonetheless—is a bold move, and one that we need to prepare for. As the temps drop, condensation in the boat is becoming a bit of a problem. It’s time to close up the portholes. Armed with a piece of cedar board and small hammer, I make my way from portfolio to portfolio, removing each screen as I go. Then, it’s time for some weatherstripping. This will help with the condensation. I tackle the project along with my trusty heat gun. This will be a nice solution until we get the boat shrink-wrapped in another few weeks. Another project is laying our Code Zero out to dry, and then packing it up and storing it properly for the winter. Filling our water tanks could become an issue this winter with how cold the Newfoundland weather can be. I have an idea for how to make filling our tanks easier and more accessible…I just need to make a quick run to the hardware store for supplies. The water will get shut off at the docks soon, but since we’re so close to the marina clubhouse, we can run a hose from the building to the boat with ease. Then, my new additions to our water tanks should make filling up easier (and faster) than ever. Now that we have a better system for filling up our water tanks, winterizing our Spectra water-maker is next on the boat work list. I flush the system, following the instructions in the manual. With the harbor expected to freeze over for the winter, we won’t be making much water. Better to take the water-maker offline completely and stored properly. As if I didn’t have enough boat work on my to-do list, Robin caught diesel fuel leaking from the overflow valve on our Dickinson Newport diesel heater. Fortunately, I can stand in as a diesel tech for the day. I think something inside the valve assembly might be stuck. There are a lot of parts and springs, but we’re going to crack into it, take it apart, and get the diesel overflow to stop dripping one way or another. Eventually, we get the heater back into tip-top shape. After all this hard work, we decided to take a day off to mosey along a highly-recommended foliage drive. The drive starts in Cox’s Cove and travels along dirt roads all the way back to Corner Brook. The foliage was at peak, and the forest looked like a celebration. We collided with yet another log! This is the 4th one in 12 months and I'm over it! Fortunately this collision was not too bad and we only suffered minimal damage to the rudder and were able to continue on or way. I will repair the rudder at a later date. After that we had a pretty relaxing sail and anchored at an amazingly beautiful island. It's not often that you get an island all to yourself in Indonesia and we really enjoyed the peace and quiet. Later a boat full of locals came past and told us this particular island was sacred and thought to be possessed by devil spirits and that we shouldn't go ashore under any circumstances! Wow ok. A few days later, sailing to a new island our Jib started to break apart. I've sort of been waiting for it too happen so wasn't too surprised when it blew apart. Now we are in need of an expensive new sail! After weeks of navigating the busy Singapore and Malacca Straits, we finally arrive in one of the most beautiful places we've seen in a long time. Southern Langkawi is a maze of towering limestone cliffs, hidden channels and secluded anchorages. As we carefully weave our way through shallow water and strong currents, we're rewarded with what quickly becomes one of our favourite anchorages of the journey so far. Over the following days we explore this incredible corner of the Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark by dinghy, kayak and paddleboard, discovering dramatic rock formations, hidden beaches and an abundance of wildlife. Sea eagles soar overhead, hornbills glide between the islands, monitor lizards patrol the shoreline and we spot dusky leaf monkeys for the first time. We also visit the famous Lake of the Pregnant Maiden (Tasik Dayang Bunting), but instead of arriving with the crowds, we wait until evening and find ourselves completely alone in one of Langkawi's most iconic locations. And just when we think the day couldn't get any better, dolphins appear beside the boat on our journey home. Jason Carroll and Team Argo were unstoppable at the GC32 Villasimius Cup after the American crew foiled to victory on a beautiful final day in Sardinia on the GC32 Racing Tour 2017. The breeze started around 10 knots from the west and built to 18 knots by the end of four windward-leeward races that saw the fleet charging downwind at speeds approaching 30 knots. It was the perfect conclusion to the second round of this season’s GC32 Racing Tour.

After a pretty hectic weekend in Mykonos, we return to the boat and set sail, heading towards Poseidon's Temple with our new crew members, Fadia and Adam. In this episode we get to dry fit our new Bow Roller, this is much larger so that our 30kg SPADE anchor can be stored on it. Here we finish the preparation and fit the last FR4 plate (high density, fireproof Epoxy and Fibreglass boards) bedded on thickened epoxy. We are refitting a 44 year old Rival 38 for a Sustainable Sailing retirement in a few years. Two years ago, when we bought Vida she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings. We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all electric (motor, cooking etc). Now that the inside is dry (thanks to new windows, new hatches and leak chasing) we are fitting her out for live-aboard world cruising. Jimmy Spithill and the USA SailGP Team have had their fair share of bad like in the season so far, and while the USA boat got through to the finals race and finished 2nd, he still loves to play the underdog! He talks here about what it will take to match the consistency of the Australian and British teams when the breeze is up and he also suggests that we should be prepared for very different conditions from a summer event in San Francisco, when the last event of the season is held there in March 2022.
