Once we left Annapolis, we spent a very chilly, windy and bumpy day on the Chesapeake. We had 20 knot winds coming directly at us on the bow and the swell felt like being in a washing machine. We anchored for the night at James Island in the Little Choptank River. The next day we motored 25 miles to Solomons Island and dropped anchor in Back Creek where we were reunited with new friends aboard SV Ocean Cowboy and SV Nickelby. We spent 2 days exploring this little island town located where the Patuxent River and the Chesapeake Bay meet. Episode 064 After spending a peaceful night off the stunningly beautiful Makogai Island, we start our journey to Vitu Levu. After sailing out of Makogai’s channel, we sail up the Broad Passage and enter the Vitu Levu’s northern reef at Nananū Passage. The sail from Makogai to Nananū-i-rai was 53 nautical miles. It was a very calm passage and we motorsailed the whole way. Once inside the reef, we faced our most challenging sail to date, not only navigating an extensive reef system but also experiencing a variety of wind conditions and directions from being becalmed to 38 knots on the nose. Join me, Ryan the Rogue Rigger on my journey of restoring a Mach 2 International Moth that I just picked up. I plan on upgrading it with all the modern systems with out breaking the bank and then I will take you along for the steep learning curve of learning to sail this Tasmanian devil of a boat. I have dreamed of owning one of these since they first came out back in 2008 when I got to take one for a spin. It was an unreal experience/feeling that I have been chasing ever since. At the time they were crazy expensive to buy and not in my budget. These days they are still crazy expensive to buy new, now there are a lot of older moths on the second hand market that are relatively affordable (Less than a Laser/ILCA in this case). For those of you who don't know, an International Moth is a single handed 11 foot long hydro foiling sailboat. These boats literally fly over the water on two hydrofoils doing speeds 2-3 times the speed of the wind. In this episode I mock up the upgraded rigging systems and start splicing up a few things.

Hi, Lowell here of Pacific Solo and the Never Too Late Academy. I've arrived at a new island in the Ryukyu Island Chain. It's an island that I've never been able to really pronounce properly, and I won't pronounce it properly now but I'll say it slowly syllable by syllable, Okinoerabu shima. And we're in the Port of Wadomari in the north. Had a great help from, the Watanabes this morning on their boat to see us off in Yoron and they gave us some onigiri to eat. And now we're here and, it's gonna be a 60-mile jaunt to Amami tomorrow. Kind of feeling down because this quest to follow the the cherry blossom front by boat seems at risk, because I was waylaid with norovirus on a previous island. And also, the cherry blossom front is arriving early in most places. Um, not sure what I'm going to do. Always it's never too late to try to do something. We are finally putting in the last piece of our lightning-fried electronics to get our AIS online and broadcast our position, before dropping the tools to go explore a massive beach resort that was completely abandoned back in the nineties. On our mooring in Luperon, we install our new AIS to replace the final piece of our lightning fried electronics. The installation includes the helm station mount, wiring, and antennas. We also visit the abandoned beach resort and deserted ruins at Playa Grande.
