C'est l'écart entre les deux leaders, à la sortie d'un pot au noir qui n'a pas logé les deux solitaires à la même enseigne. Jean-Pierre Dick et Alex Thomson s'apprêtent à le franchir d'ici peu, quand le club des cinq se débat dans des vents erratiques. Ce soir, il ne restera plus un seul navigateur dans le Pacifique. Encore deux à trois jours dans les alizés avant d'aborder le dernier passage à niveau de ce Vendée Globe. Mais, ce juge de paix risque d'être particulièrement exigeant. Devant les étraves des deux leaders, se profile une barrière anticyclonique, composée de la jonction des deux anticyclones, des Bermudes à l'ouest et des Açores à l'est. Pour l'heure, la seule solution semble être d'adopter une large courbe dans l'ouest pour essayer d'accrocher au final les régimes de vents portants dans la dernière ligne droite vers les Sables d'Olonne. Mais à la latitude des Canaries, il faudra traverser une zone de vents faibles avant de décider, soit de contourner l'archipel des Açores, soit de le traverser. Collés serrés Pour cette dernière étape, chacun fourbit ses armes. Armel Le Cléac'h (Banque Populaire) sait qu'il dispose d'un « code zéro », une voile hybride entre génois et gennaker, particulièrement bien adapté aux petits airs. François Gabart (MACIF), quant à lui, va tenter de profiter de sa position pour rester au contrôle de son adversaire... Il est encore un peu tôt pour savoir si le record du plus faible écart entre le premier et le deuxième (Vincent Riou -- Jean Le Cam, 6h 33mn en 2005) sera battu, mais l'issue du duel demeure incertaine, à une dizaine de jours de l'arrivée. Si l'avantage est à François Gabart, on peut compter sur Armel Le Cléac'h pour ne rien lâcher. Dans leur sillage, Jean-Pierre Dick (Virbac-Paprec 3) et Alex Thomson (Hugo Boss) approchent du pot au noir. Dans des alizés mollissant, Jean-Pierre a entrepris, pour la septième fois, l'ascension de son mât, afin de finaliser les dernières réparations qu'il souhaitait faire sur sa cadène d'étai depuis plusieurs jours. Le navigateur niçois n'est pas du genre à pratiquer la procrastination, mais pour ce genre de gymnastique, c'est avant tout l'état de la mer qui commande. Quoi qu'il en soit, il sera devenu le spécialiste d'un exercice qu'il n'affectionnait guère avant le départ. Si tu vas à Rio... Non, Jean Le Cam ne s'est pas laissé bercer par les sirènes de Copacabana. S'il est amené à longer les côtes du Brésil, c'est contraint par des conditions météorologiques extrêmement changeantes. Le skipper de SynerCiel attend avec impatience une bascule du vent sur la gauche qui devrait lui permettre de virer de bord et de faire route vers l'est. Tant que la dite bascule n'a pas eu lieu, Jean n'a pas d'autre choix que de prolonger son bord, quitte à finir par virer au pied du Christ de Corcovado. Tous les navigateurs de ce groupe des cinq ne savent d'ailleurs plus à quels saints se vouer. Dominique Wavre (Mirabaud) et Mike Golding (Gamesa) ne peuvent que constater des décalages de grande ampleur entre les prévisions des fichiers météo et la réalité du terrain. Arnaud Boissières (AKENA Vérandas) relevait quant à lui des vents de secteur est quand il attendait un régime d'ouest qui l'aurait propulsé à bonne vitesse. Ajoutés à cela, un trafic maritime de plus en plus dense, quelques rencontres fortuites, comme ces plateformes de forage non répertoriées sur la cartes rencontrées par Jean Le Cam, et l'on comprendra que cette remontée de l'Atlantique Sud n'a rien d'une sinécure. Seul Javier Sanso (ACCIONA 100% EcoPowered) semble confiant dans sa route à l'est, mais au prix d'un détour conséquent. Derrière eux, Bertrand de Broc (Votre Nom autour du Monde avec EDM Projets) et Tanguy de Lamotte (Initiatives-cœur) devraient être rejoints en Atlantique par Alessandro Di Benedetto (Team Plastique) dans la soirée. Tous trois vont bénéficier encore quelques jours, d'un flux général d'ouest qui devrait leur permettre de franchir les latitudes sud à bonne vitesse. Le navigateur italien fermera donc derrière lui la porte du Pacifique. Ils étaient treize à l'entrée de l'océan Indien, ils seront treize à franchir le cap Horn. Une première dans toute l'histoire du Vendée Globe.

The Week of Mardi Gras in New Orleans is a State celebration. So much so that school is out for a week in Lousiana during the week of Fat Tuesday. So we use it as a second Spring Break. We loaded up the girls, hooked up the camper and headed to the West Coast of Florida. We are still entertaining this idea of being in Florida with the boat and we are thinking that buying waterfront property may be better than throwing half that money away toward slip rent. After 132 races Presentation Brothers Cork (PBC) were the winners of the Irish Schools Team Racing Championships for the third year in a row. 12 teams qualified for the finals and came from Munster, Leinster and Connaught for the Schull, West Cork event. PBC was followed closely by CBC and then Schull Sharks. Next year the hosts will be the Royal St George Yacht Club on Dublin Bay.
