►Las Palmas, almost an unavoidable stopover on the Atlantic route from Europe, welcomed thousands of sailors during the month of November, when the north-easterly trade winds begin to set in. These crews included a total of 1,300 sailors flying the ARC colors (ARC and ARC +) aboard 253 sailboats. During our visits to the pontoons, we got a measure of the Starlink revolution: only one entrant was equipped last year, compared with 80% of the fleet today... The quality of the connections offered by this satellite operator makes it possible to efficiently follow weather developments, keep in touch those ashore and even work as if at the office! For the first time since we’ve been following ocean-going crews, Vincent, aboard Outremer 51 Piment Rouge, will be sharing his transatlantic passage with us via his videos, which we’ll be relaying. Another special feature of this 2023 edition will be the large number of diesel cans strapped to the guardwires: in a context of very light winds, unusual for the season, the engines (authorized with a penalty for the Multihull category) are likely to be much in demand aboard many of the multihulls. After two weeks of seminars, meetings and safety inspections, the atmosphere on the docks was becoming truly electric during the last three days running up to the start. Studying the weather, stocking up on fresh supplies, washing fruit and vegetables - everyone realized that there was an ocean to cross... Some crew members are more Zen than others: the oldest sailor in the ARC, Joff Hutchinson, 89, declared: “I’ve been sailing for 82 years and I’ve always wanted to cross the Atlantic. Now that my sons have retired, there’s no better time”. Départ de La Grande Motte pour une belle navigation en direction de Gruissan, avec une route de 53 milles nautiques à parcourir. Les conditions sont calmes au départ, mer plutôt tranquille, météo clémente. Le vent, discret dans les premières heures, devrait se réveiller en fin de parcours. Et comme prévu, les 3 dernières heures offrent une belle récompense : un vent sympathique se lève, régulier et bien orienté, parfait pour finir la traversée sous voile dans de bonnes conditions. Les voiles se gonflent, le bateau file, et l’arrivée à Gruissan se profile sous un ciel dégagé, dans une belle lumière de fin de journée.

Comme il ne faisait pas très chaud ce jour-là, Jérôme et Audrey ont décidé de profiter du temps frais pour s'occuper un peu. Plutôt que de rester à bord à ne rien faire, ils sont partis visiter le port en annexe, histoire de changer d’air et de découvrir les environs. De retour sur leur catamaran, ils en ont profité pour faire un peu d'entretien. Ils ont notamment remplacé les drisses du chariot de grand-voile afin qu’il coulisse plus facilement. Un petit ajustement bienvenu pour améliorer la manœuvrabilité. Jérôme, toujours bricoleur, s’est attaqué à un autre petit souci : il a fabriqué une pièce en métal pour bloquer la barre à roue. L’objectif ? Empêcher qu’elle ne tourne toute seule quand le bateau est en marche arrière, un problème assez courant sur ce type d’embarcation. Grâce à son système, la barre reste désormais bien en place, même lors des manœuvres les plus délicates.

This week marks a huge milestone in our catamaran build as we finally begin installing the electrical system. After months of planning and prep work, we take a trip to Annapolis to meet up with our friend Ryan, CEO of Dakota Lithium Batteries. While our batteries aren’t in hand just yet, Ryan was able to supply us with all of the Victron components that will power our boat. With those finally on board, we can officially start the electrical install. Back at the boat, Matt converts what was originally meant to be our hanging locker into the space that will house our inverters. He walks through how the mounts will be built and how the equipment will be suspended on one-inch foam to keep everything secure and isolated. Meanwhile, Jessica begins work on the overhead panels in the guest aft berth. Before the panels can go up, support blocks need to be carefully measured and placed to hold the female ends of the snaps. Because of the contours where the hull side, deck, and transom meet, this turns into a lot more measuring and laser marking than expected. It’s a meticulous process, and the next steps will continue in the following episode. We wrap up by jumping forward a week to where the hanging locker area has been sanded, painted, and is ready to receive the first Victron component — the beginning of our electrical system finally going into the boat. The next stage of the build will involve running a lot of wire throughout the boat. During our stay at Big Bend National Park, Texas Avid Outdoors as well as the rest of the campers in the Chisos Basin experienced a thermal inversion and ice fog. While fog is a relatively normal weather condition in Big Bend, ice fog, while common in Alaska is not a common sight in Big Bend.
