DIY easy docking, dolphins, dancing, generator woes, and tall ship It’s a real stretch to reach dock lines when coming into our slip. Solution...build an extension to the dock steps for easier line retrieval. We attached a piece of 2 X 4 to the step handle that can swivel out over the edge of the dock. Before going out, a dock line is hung over the extension. It is so much easier to hook that line; if only catching a fish was as easy. Our day sail had to be cut short. Just as we were about to raise the sail a noise from the engine room caught our attention. Some of the screws on the engine shroud were rattling and coming loose. That was not acceptable, no sailing and back to dock we had to go. Not all was lost as there were several dolphins nearby swimming and gliding effortlessly in the water. Gotta love those dolphins! During a land trip we were lucky to catch a USCG tall ship, the Barque Eagle. She was in dock and available for a quick tour. The vessel appears to be steel hulled, is 295 feet in length and was built in 1936. The US Coast Guard uses her for training and she carries a crew of about 50 when out at sea. It’s always a thrill to be able to go onboard such a huge boat. After much diagnosing and replacing parts, our generator still fails to run without the glow plug being constantly energized on startup. So...it’s time to call in a professional for assistance. We will keep you posted as to how that goes in an upcoming episode. Still having fun living on Isabella. Karen dances all over the deck and both she and Steve do a bit of Tai Chi. In this episode we started to sail towards Brest but we had to abort the trip and turn around and sail back to Cherbourg due to a critical failure we got at sea. Anders and the technician investigate the problem and to reduce the crowd in the saloon I went out to checkout a huge nuclear submarine and an old ruin. We are a middle aged couple that has left our hectic business lives to go sailing with our boat Fridá af Wisby and our cat Litza. The sailing in our home water the Baltic Sea is part of our preparation to sail to the Mediterranean Sea. Anders has been at the sea most of his life and sailed for the Swedish national dingy sailing team as a young man. Gitte has also grown up with boat and spent every summer sailing with her father as a teenager but made a pause of about 15 years without sailing as an adult, had just begun to pick-up the interest before she meet Anders a 4 years ago. Onboard we also have our cat Litza a 3 year old Devon Rex we call her the cattain because cats always decide over their humans. Litza is a Devon Rex cat and she is the real cattain aboard. Fridá af Wisby is a Wauquiez 47 pilot saloon that we Gitte and Anders bought in UK in 2019 and that we have sailed to Gotland and in season 1 2020 we sail in the Baltic Sea.

Being in a car accident is never a good start to a day. Luckily the motor bike driver that ran into the back of us only had scratches and bruises. Our new friend that ran into us was on his way back from getting his first Covid vaccine shot. All in all everything ended up good and I hope his trip to get his second vaccine shot was way less eventful than his first. I mentioned in other videos how doing one boat repair seems to lead down a rabbit hole of other repairs. Our electronics upgrade started with Matahom not being able to display wind speed. Our original ST60 Raymarine Tri Data had three dashes for everything. When I tried to remove it, the front panel cracked from years of sun and salt. So we decided to upgrade to the newer unit. In addition we had an open space in our cockpit dash so we went with two of them instead of trying to figure out some other way to fill in the hole from some distance past removed instrument. Which then lead to our auto pilot panel looking outdated and not matching. So yeah, we replaced that as well even though it worked fine. All of that goes in and guess what, still no wind speed. Check all the wiring one more time before going up the mast to replace the anemometer (wind speed indicator). All checked out so up the mast we go. But 1/2 up the mast we decide a radar should go on. And we also need AIS as it is required in many countries in SE Asia. So yeah there you have it, wind speed display issues leads to new radar, instruments and AIS. He will be doing our solar and new charging / inverter install as well. Finally Captain Yen and the 3.5 meter tide here at G and T don't get along well. Okt 2021: von Antiparos/ Despotika. Teil 4: Montag: Um 7:43 starteten wir die kurze Strecke Richtung Sifnos. Die Wellen waren mit 2 m angesagt. Einzelne überragten uns aber um das doppelte und im Halbwindkur "kletterten" wir diese im 3.Reff aber mühsam hoch. Immer öfter surfte ich sie dann auch runter. Das war zwar angenehmer aber viel anstrengender zu steuern. Im HAfen von Platis Gialos stoppte ich dann das Schiff beim Anlegen zu früh auf, der Marinero befestigte die Leine daher nicht und so drehte ich mit dem Bug an den Steg. Dumme Sache. Wir wären kaum mehr weg gekommen. Der Marinero hatte leider keine Ahung und ich blieb nicht die Einzige der es so erging. Der strand in Platis Gialos war allerdings wunderschön und so wetterten wir einen weiteren Tag dort ab ;) Mittwoch: um 10:15 starteten wir wieder um eine Insel weiter zurück zu kommen. Unter der Landabdeckung von Sifnos waren die Wellen kleiner. Nach der nördlichen Spitze düsten wir Amwind (60Grad) unter segeln mit 7,4 kn Speed nach Serifos bis 15:38 Uhr. Wir waren dann schon versucht weiter zu segeln, aber weitere 4 h unter diesen Bedingungen bewogen uns dann doch in der Bucht Koutala West zu ankern. Im östlichen teil wäre ein schönerer Strand gewesen und die Sonne hätte 20 MIn länger hin geschienen. Donnerstag: Um 7:30 starteten wir die 40 sm Richtung Nord nach Sounion. Da der Wind auch von Nord kam, motorten wir leider 8 Stunden. Das war lang! In der Bucht von Sounion war es voll aber man gewöhnt sich in Griechenland daran, dem Nachbar fast auf den Teller sehen zu können ... Freitag: Wir motorten Richtung Alimos, während es regnete ankerten wir noch mal in der Bucht von Prasonisi und legten um 14 Uhr wieder in der Marina Alimos an. Teil 3: Mi: Ich war fertig von der stürmischen Nacht vor Anker und wollte nur zurück nach Milos. In der Landabdeckung schien aber alles nicht mehr so schlimm und so machten wir uns doch wie geplant auf den Weg nach IOS. Als wir aus der Landabdeckung südl. von Polyaigos heraus kamen, erwarteten uns 2 m hohe Wellen. Mit Speed von 5-8 kn kamen wir jedoch gut voran. Da uns der direkte Weg mit 45 Grad zum Wind zu anstrengend war, drehten wir ab mit 120 Grad Richtung Folegandros. In deren Landabdeckung war es wieder fein. Zwischen den Inseln von Sikinos bis Ios hatten wir über 30 kn Wind und hohe Wellen. Erleichtert legten wir um 15:30 in Ios an. Es war der Tag VOR dem Meltemi und wir bekamen den letzten Platz am sichersten Ost-Kai. DO-SA verbringen wir in Ios uns wettern den Meltemi ab. Einen Tag erkunden wir die Insel mit einem Quad. Sonntag, 3.10.21: nach 4 Tagen verlassen wir den Hafen wegen Zeitdruck. Vor dem Hafen steuerten wir nach Norden Richtung Antiparos. Wegen 35 kn Wind gegen an und 2-4m hoher Wellen drehten wir erst um, versuchten es aber in einem anderen Winkel zu den Wellen erneut und quälten uns dann doch 5 h im 3. Reff Amwind nach Antiparos in die Ankerbucht Despotika. Teil 2: Mo: Nach einer ruhigen Nacht legten wir um 7:30 von Kithnos ab und segelten ohne Wind die Küste von Kithnos nach Süden. Zwischen den Inseln segeln wir mit 15 kn Raumwind bei höher werdenden Wellen Richtung Milos. Dort legen wir erstmalig röm-Kath mit Buganker in Milos um 15:45 Uhr an. Es klappte erst beim 2 mal, da wir beim 1. mal den Anker zu früh ausbrachten und die Kette zu kurz wurde ;) Di: Wir starteten um 8:20 aus Milos mit 20 kn Wind aus Nord um Milos westlich zu umfahren. Zu Beginn also mit Amwind dann bis zu den Felsen von Kleftiko mit Raumwind. Dort ankerten, badeten und tauchten wir vor der wunderschönen Kulisse von 11:30 bis 12:30. Danach motorten wir überwiegend südlich um Milos Richtung Osten gegenüber zu der wunderschönen Bucht von Polyaigos zur Bucht Ormas Livadaki. Leider war die Bucht gegen den 30 kn Nord-wind geschützt. Ein KAT verließ die Bucht um 4 Uhr. Wir um 7:10 Uhr. Teil 1: Stadtbesichtigung Athen und Akropolis von Donnerstag bis Samstag (4 Minuten lang ;) Samstag, 25.09.21 wir starten aus der Marina Alimos um 15:15 und kamen leider nur bis zu der schönen Ankerbucht bei Parasonisi. Sonntag: Um 7:15 ging es von dort mit 15 kn-20kn Amwind Richtung Kithnos. Dort ankerten wir um 15:15 in der sehr engen Fikiadha Bucht, in die es mit 20kn Wind bläst. Insgesamt haben wir 5 Tage nicht segeln können. Die "geplanten" Inseln Santorin, Naxos und Mykonos nehmen wir uns fürs nächste Jahr vor ;) Gesamt 300 sm davon 98 gesegelt. Kosten: Hafen Milos 2,80 €; Ios 2,75 €; Quad 35 € + 17 € Tank; Hafen Sifnos 12 €; Tanken: 163 € für 40 Motorstunden (Tanken klappte dies mal super!)
