An easy and amazing day trip on the Rio Dulce is Agua Calientes, a freakishly hot waterfall that cascades into a coldwater river. Our first trip to the falls was a special one as we joined a group of cruisers to support a humanitarian project in the town of Agua Calientes. Like all Central American countries, trash dumping in the rivers and lakes is an issue. The children learned in school how important it was to keep their river clean and then they spent 5 hours picking up trash in the river. All of the participants were allowed to pick prizes, school supplies donated by the cruiser community. Without a pen and notebook, children are not allowed to attend school and these children could not afford these educational staples. We waited months to cruise to the Bahamas, and we finally got there! We broke all the rules and didn't stop except for a couple of overnight anchorages until we got to the middle Exumas where we caught up with some friends who would remain our buddy boat and adventure partners for the next seven weeks. We started this adventure in Pipe and Compass Cays, otherwise known as The Mice. Here we were introduced to a whole new color palette, Exuma blues. The water is the bluest we've ever seen, and the sand is unbelievably soft and white. We enjoyed the beach and the sand bars, played in Rachel's bubble bath, and petted an entire school of sharks. Coming to you from the front row in Les Sables d'Olonne, where the energy spiked as Vendée Globe winner Charlie Dalin was welcomed by a huge crowd, celebrating his win. Charlie had been there but never done that. In the 2020-2021 edition of the Vendee Globe race, he had been first up this channel. But he officially finished second after Yannick Bestaven was awarded time credit for coming to another sailor’s aid and achieved a well-deserved victory. Today it is Charlie’s day. There is nothing anywhere in sailing like the day the first finisher crosses the line in Les Sables d’Olonne. Harken was there, At The Front…where we must be. There will be time for analysis of the race and full examination of the Harken equipment aboard each boat after a lap of the planet. Day 1 got off to a tricky start at the Youth Sailing World Championships, with very light winds delaying racing across all fleets. An early AP was posted, giving sailors time to relax on the beach, in the boat parks, and around the food court — sharing stories, meeting new friends, and waiting patiently for the breeze to fill in. By midday, AP over A flags began to appear, and several classes scheduled for later racing were unfortunately cancelled for the day. These included Formula Kite Men and Women, iQFOiL Men and Women, 420 Female, and 29er Female. Despite the challenging conditions, some fleets did make it onto the water. ILCA Men and Women, 420 Men, 29er Men, and Nacra 15 all managed to complete racing. 🎥 Today’s livestream focused on the 29er Men and the Nacra 15, and those fleets delivered some exciting moments. 🔹 29er Men Two races were completed in tough, light-air conditions. •⁠ ⁠Race 1 was won by the German brothers Tizian and Julian Lembeck, claiming the first race victory of the championship. •⁠ ⁠Race 2 went to the Polish duo Szymon Kolka and Bartosz Zmudzinski, the reigning 2025 29er EuroCup champions, who now sit third overall. The Australians Sebastian Cheng and Jacob Marks are currently second overall, with Sebastian — just 13 years old — showing remarkable composure at the helm. Leading the fleet after Day 1 are the Italians Giuseppe Montesano and Enrico Coslovich, whose consistent results give them a narrow one-point lead at the top of the standings. 🔹 Nacra 15 France took the lead in the Nacra 15, with Marius Praud and Emilie Mansouri taking two wins from two races, Followed by the US in second and Belgium in 3rd. --- 🔹 Other Fleets •⁠ ⁠ILCA Men & Women each completed one race. We don’t live in Port Protection, Alaska full time, but we’ve been here for a stretch working on a remote project, and this is what our days look like while we’re here. With foundation work paused while the concrete sets, we head out by skiff to Point Baker. Spend the day working on outboards, troubleshooting small engines, and sorting through a stack of generators to see what can be brought back to life. Back in Port Protection, the tide is coming up and the timbers we staged for the project need to be moved before they float off. We paddle out and get them higher above the waterline before the next high tide. This is day-to-day life working in remote Alaska. Boat access, changing weather, mechanical problem solving, and staying ahead of the tides.
