It was a great day on Sydney Harbour for the first official Short Marine x Grady-White Open Day. We had 12 different models on display for people to sea-trial and get a feel of what makes these boats so special. It was a jam packed day of great value which included guest speakers who were there to educate and talk about boating and fishing. Look forward to doing this again soon!

We add a huge new worktop to our galley turning it from an L shape to a large U. We add an extra, partial, bulkhead to support the worktop and add the strength lost by cutting back the original bulkhead. We lose some seating space but have a footbox under the new worktop so that we still have a full length bed in the saloon. We had already replaced all the original galley with new worktop and sinks having stripped everything out to remove the entire gas installation, remove all the seacocks, gain access to the Whitlock steering gearbox and to fix deck leaks. However, for liveaboard cruising we decided that we needed a much larger galley particularly with space for food preparation. People asking us what are we still doing in Porto Santo. On such a small island. Isn’t it boring? We enjoy life. Helping other people & try to make from every day a picnic. We have a BBQ with a group of mostly younger sailors from several different countries. It was great and with a lot of music and dancing until late at night. Music made with a guitar, melodica , castillette and a banana box. We are helping other sailors with hauling out. An extra hand is always welcome. Sometimes using our dinghy Hermann, we play the part of the missing bow thruster or propellor. Other times we help people who are going back in the water. This is la Puce from Tommy and Camilla from Vikings going south. They came to Porto Santo to wait for a new prop. With some delivery problems they stayed for almost 2 months. During that time, they became dear friends. When they left for the Canaries, We had a great farewell party Sometimes we are playing games. Sterrenjagen being one of our favorites. And of course, we have a lot of welcome and farewell parties. Occasionally, we have great nights at the bar and it becomes a big party. The whole marina couldn’t sleep until late that night Another visiting yacht, gave a yoga lesson on the beach when the sun was going under. We did our best, but we are not so good in this as you can see.. We are not so stable in this sand and even the wind was trying to knock us over. We have a Dutch dj in the harbor. And he arranged a support act in a smal beach bar behind the marina. & Sometimes we have a lot of fun with the cruiser family kids . Hope you enjoy! Während Sabina diverse Malerarbeiten durchführt arbeite ich diverse Kleinprojekte mit Epoxi ab Unser Segelboot Squib, ein Catalac 9M, ist in die Jahre gekommen, die Verkleidung hängt teilweise von der Decke, die Farbe blättert ab, die Elektrik auf dem Stand des vorigen Jahrtausends,..... Ein Refit steht an. Doch Broterwerb und Verpflichtungen lassen es nicht zu, monatelang in Griechenland am Boot zu arbeiten. Da wird schon 2018 die Idee geboren Squib nach Wien zu bringen, wo man jederzeit Zugang hat, der Einkauf von Material in der Muttersprache abgewickelt werden kann und alles andere seinen gewohnten Verlauf nimmt. 2021 war es dann endlich soweit, mit zwei komplett überholten Motoren und einem neuen Geräteträger starteten wir Anfang Juli Richtung Südfrankreich.Leider hatten wir für die gesamte Reise nur zwei Monate Zeit, deswegen hieß es die meiste Zeit Strecke machen. Doch manchmal nahmen wir uns die Zeit zu verweilen, uns Orte näher anzuschauen. One of our favorite features is the excellent ventilation since we mostly live as "hookers" (aka at anchor) where the boat automatically turns into the wind so we stay cool and we don't need to battle mold. We also have starlink for easy off-grid life. Our 2400 watt solar panel array also means we rarely need to run an engine to charge our batteries. ABOUT US: We saved for a our future boat, sold everything that we owned, and shipped the rest in a container to Cape Town, South Africa. We then flew there and explored South Africa by way of a safari and touring Cape Town before moving aboard our boat. We then sailed to Saint Helena, Ascension Island, Fernando de Naronha (Brazil), Martinique, Sint Maarten (Dutch and French side), the US Virgin Islands (Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas), the British Virgin Islands (Anegada, Norman Island, Jost van Dyke, and Anegada), The Bahamas (Inagua, Crooked Island, Long Island, George Town, Staniel Cay, the Exumas, and Eleuthera). We then sailed back to the United States, making landfall in Cape Canaveral, Florida. From there our destinations are endless! Both Dennis and Ann grew up military brats with Army fathers. Dennis (the Colonel) served 30 years in the US Army and his retirement pension helped us retire in our 50s. Ann (the ship's Captain) wrote Test Automation in Python and Java. Dennis and Ann met on Match.com where Ann had in her profile "Do you want to sail the world with me?" Ann easily brought Dennis into sailing, and he loved the GTFOplan of retiring early and sailing the world. Overview The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has announced preventive water releases from both Gatún and Madden/Alhajuela dams due to lakes approaching maximum operational levels . This is a flood-control action, not routine water management. Discharges can cause rapid and dangerous rises in the Chagres River and downstream low-lying areas. Areas Impacted 1. Chagres River – Upper Basin (Alhajuela) Expect sudden increases in river levels and strong, fast-moving currents. Jungle areas, banks, and campsites can flood with little warning. 2. Chagres River – Lower Basin (Gatún Dam) Rapid downstream surges toward Gatún, Piña, Achiote, and Fuerte Sherman. Increased debris and turbulence. 3. Gamboa Region / Canal Crossings Although primary canal operations remain normal, the surrounding riverbanks and backwaters may be unstable. Immediate Captain Guidance All Ocean Posse vessels and crews ashore in Panamá should exercise heightened caution: Avoid all Chagres River activities (dinghy runs, kayaking, SUP, inland tours) until ACP declares levels stabilized. Stay clear of riverbanks, jungle trails near the waterline, and low-lying camps. If you hear ACP sirens, move immediately to higher ground. Expect turbid water, floating logs, and strong currents near any river outflow areas. If planning to transit the Canal, note that lock operations are unaffected, but watershed conditions remain dynamic. For Captains Already Inland If crew or guests are on excursions: Confirm their operators are aware of ACP releases. Request immediate route changes away from rivers or creeks feeding the Chagres basin. Maintain reliable VHF, cell, or satellite comms. Why This Matters Releases from Gatún and Alhajuela can raise water levels meters within minutes. These events are rare but serious and are only triggered when lakes reach near-capacity due to heavy rainfall. Recommended Monitoring ACP Water Dashboard: Real-time lake levels Local Civil Protection (SINAPROC) alerts Gamboa Bridge & Gatún area reports from local mariner groups Ocean Posse chat for on-the-water observations Status This advisory remains active until ACP announces the conclusion of preventive discharges. We've been working on an off-grid foundation repair after removing a couple of trees from the roof of this treasured Alaskan gen. In this episode we crawled under this house expecting problems… just not this. One of the main load-bearing posts? Sitting on dirt. No footing. No anchor. Just years of “good enough” holding on through storms, tides, and time. So we got to work. Phase 3 of this off-grid foundation repair meant digging under the house, bracing everything in the dark, and figuring out how to turn something sketchy into something solid… without overbuilding or pretending we’ve got unlimited time and money. We also haul hundreds of pounds of concrete from Wooden Wheel Cove where the Alaskan Gypsy is tied to the state float, to the project site by skiff, on a sunny, beautiful day. This is real life in remote Alaska. You work with what you’ve got. You make it better than it was. And you respect the fact that somehow… it’s been standing this long. We’re not here to build perfect. We’re here to build better.
