We were boarded by the U.S. Coast Guard for 4 1/2 hours. They checked our papers and swabbed us for drugs. All of our safety gear was on board so no citations. Apparently someone in Virginia (their home base) thought we were smugglers. Sorry, no dice Coast Guard. We felt bad for the boarding party as they were as annoyed as us having to do all the extra work....All in all though they were very professional and friendly, we appreciate there role on the high seas and would prefer no one else to come rescue our butts in a pinch...

Two and a half years we had waited for this moment and boy did it not disappoint! From backing out of the marina and getting stuck on next doors boat, to finding out we had no forward gear and hitting the jetty. This day really, really tested us to say the least. But wow, the minute the sails were hoisted, everything was forgotten and we had a beautiful sail. The yin and the yang. It is so interesting in the boating world how one moment everything can be going wrong, and the next, everything right. Watching the footage back bought back painful moments (for the boat and for me- Becka!). Seeing myself respond to the stress by internally combusting and asking Paul for help was quite eye opening to look back at..something i really need to work on. We have recently ditched our expensive navigation software in favor of Signal K and OpenCPN, free alternatives. When planning passages, we can now plot the best course for the weather and current, transfer that course to multiple devices aboard Sabado, overlay radar, and customize our anchor watch alarm. Using Grafana and influxDB, we have also designed a page displayed on our nav desk monitor screen (and on mobile devices while away) that tracks our energy and water levels, refrigeration temperatures, propane and fuel tank levels, and more! The color-coded data and speech-enabled alarms have taken the mystery out of our boat: we can check everything on one screen, and there are no unidentified beeps! Wir sind beinahe ohne Segelerfahrung auf diese Reise aufgebrochen. Das erste mal ablegen mit der Eira, war am Tag, an dem die Reise begonnen hat. Bislang haben wir die Biskaya überquert, schwere Situationen in Spanien und Portugal gemeistert, den Atlantik in 22 Tagen überquert und wir haben es geschafft unseren Motor auf Guadeloupe zu reparieren. Jetzt geht unser Weg weiter richtung Westen. Die nächsten 2 1/2 Jahre werden wir nutzen um den Pazifik zu durchqueren, den indonesischen Raum zu erkunden und letztendlich nach der Umrundung des Kap der guten Hoffnungen wieder Fuß auf europäisches Land zu setzen. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. The Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race is one of the most famous yacht races in the world. Starting each year on 26 December, it is an examination of the preparedness and resilience of man and machine. Organized by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, in collaboration with the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, the 628 nautical mile offshore race stretches physical and mental resources to their limits. The overall winner of the Rolex Sydney Hobart receives the Tattersall Cup together with a coveted Rolex timepiece, the recognised reward for excellence and a deserved prize for those that overcome not just their opponents, but nature too. 2018 marks the 74rd edition with over 90 yachts entered, including 13 from overseas.
