Its finally happened! We have, at last got around to cutting off the front of the boat!!! Well not quite but almost! In this week's episode we tackle the rusty anchor chain locker which we know many of you have been waiting for us to do. It's a daunting job with some tricky fabrication and large, heavy, cumbersome, pieces of steel so maybe that's why we've been vacillating. Watch to the end to see if we manage to do a half decent job of it. Remember we're doing all of this so we can go full time cruising as a sailing family in a few years time. In this episode we explore Martinique by sea and by land - we rent a car to be able to drive around and see more of the island for Cass' last day. The sad day comes to drop her off at the airport and say goodbye after an amazing time spent together. She is the best crew and best friend I could ever ask for! We are in the middle of Cyclone season and we need to move the boat. As we debate where to go, we share a few rescue stories from the Carenage, provision for the passage, plead for the sun to come out, get kicked off a wave in Huahine, show you how to exercise while living aboard and how we celebrate Christmas on a boat! Christmas on a boat is usually quite hard to pull off, but since we had just flown in from the states we could bring presents from our extended family with us. We did forget to bring stockings though, so orange tube socks had to work! Best Christmas ever? Maybe! Regarding surfing in Huahine, unfortunately it seems the "Black Shorts" type of attitude from Hawaii has come to this island and some locals do not want outsiders surfing here. Having surfed throughout French Polynesia, this was a new experience for us, as usually the locals paddle up and give you a hand slap, formally welcoming you to the wave. As Seth surfed by himself in Huahine (taking the waves from no-one), a local charged him with his boat in the take off zone. Ironically, by expelling Seth from the wave, it will probably just draw more attention to this surf spot. Either way, there are a lot of great places to surf that are more inviting, so let's get outta here! Goodbye French Polynesia. It's been interesting... This week we are in an atoll called Fakarava, we have our two year anniversary and a well deserved day off. Kieran spoils me with a special present, we spend the rest of that day just enjoying life on the water. The following day we decide to rent push-bikes and discover more of the beautiful atoll we’re anchored in. I’m in love with the Polynesians people, everyone we have meet are so nice. Big or small, they all smile and say hi (that doesn’t happen in Sweden). Cycling around the atoll is so relaxing, we stop on the inside of the atoll for a swim in the turquoise water (paradise!!). A day well spent, with no boat maintenance, editing, or working. We needed to do this for us. The swim platform is hydraulic to easily launch and retrieve a tender. There is a large seating area/dining area on the aft flybridge and forward next to the upper helm. If preferred, the aft seating area could be removed and tender could be stowed on the bridge with the addition of a davit. Two stainless steel supports have been added to the fly to hold the additional weight. The solar panels can run everything on the DC panel during daylight hours. The side door next to the lower helm helps with short handling the boat during docking. Also, there is a third docking station in the cockpit. There is a side boarding door to the cockpit. Her generator is large enough to add additional equipment, like a water maker. Her three stateroom layout with two heads can accommodate six comfortably, with crew quarters at the bow. While entry is through a large deck hatch, it is very comfortable with a head, sink, storage, separate AC controls, and about an 8-foot berth. Her master stateroom is very large with a private head and shower area. The salon is the largest in its class with a pop-up TV that rotates for the salon and to view from the seating area surrounding the lower helm. This Cranchi 53 uses the Volvo IPS 600 geared and propped for trawler speeds. This gives the vessel excellent fuel economy at trawler speeds (2000 nm at 7.5 knots), the capability of moving at over 20 knots if needed to beat a storm, and very easy maneuverability. Lastly, the mast has been made to fold easily for those who would like to clear some shorter bridges, perfect for anyone looking to do the great loop. After saying goodbye to our family that have been with us for two months, we're left with an empty boat. A not so friendly visit from the coast guard evicts us from the anchorage and we move on further. After many comments on a previous video, I remove the cap shroud connectors and get new mast connectors fabricated and installed. After nearly ten long years with Grandpa, our car, we give him a clean and put him on the market. It is sad to say good bye to such a reliable old vessel but we do not need wheels where we are going!
