Lobster Boat milestone report -- mold complete! This is a critical juncture when we find out if we did everything right with prepping the plug, waxing it thoroughly and laying down the critical inner layer of the mold (which is the finished surface that ultimately shapes the hull). We're thrilled to report that the mold released cleanly from the plug, and has the glossy, flawless finish we needed. So we can proceed onward to building the hull for the prototype! We're exactly on schedule, pulled the mold on the day before Thanksgiving, and the first hull is in layup right now. After two months at sea, we’ve left Stockholm, Sweden behind, crossed the Baltic, and entered the Atlantic through the Kiel Canal. We sail south from Big Majors, the new autohelm humming as we test the radar over open water, stopping for provisions along the way. Rudder Cut Cay gives us gliding rays and a glowing sunset, then Adderley Cut is quiet with no dolphins this time. We drop anchor at Lee Stocking Island, the usually crowded spot completely empty in the off-season, and memories of full anchorages and open shores come flooding back. The Yandoo team of John Winning Jr, Fang Warren and Lewis Brake had already won the 2026 JJ Giltinan 18ft Skiff World Championship, presented by The Winning Group, after yesterday’s race, but officially took out the title for the third consecutive time at the conclusion of today’s Race 9 on Sydney Harbour. In today’s race, which was sailed in 15-18 knot North East wind, it was the German team of Heinrich von Bayern, Tom Martin and Andy Martin on Black Knight which took the honours when they won their first race in a JJ Giltinan championship regatta since Heinrich first began competing in 2018. The team handled the conditions superbly, and after taking the lead on the second leg of the course, held off spirited challenges from the fleet to record the historic victory for a German team. Black Knight finished 1m13s ahead of the second placed Queenslander GC Sails (Scott Cunningham, Joel Turner and Dave Cunningham), with New Zealand’s Shaw and Partners (Eli Liefting, Sam Street and Josh Schon) a further 31s back in third place. First NSW boat to finish was the fourth-placed Vaikobi, skippered by Kirk Mitchell, ahead of Shaw and Partners Financial Services-Australia (Keagan York), Lazarus Capital Partners (Tom Cunich), Smeg (Ash Rooklyn), Sixt (Jacob Marks), Big Foot Bags & Covers (Dave Hayter, Qld) and Balmain (Henry Larkings) in 10th place. Although Yandoo finished well out of the top placings in today’s race she topped the scoreboard with a total of 22 points, followed by Shaw and Partners Financial Services-Australia on 28 points. GC Sails was third on 41, followed by Lazarus Capital Partners on 52, Black Knight on 54, Sixt on 55, Vaikobi on 59 Shaw and Partners-New Zealand on 63.4 (including a scoring penalty in Race 9), Smeg on 68 and The Kitchen Maker (Lachlan Steel) on 74 points. New Zealand’s Shaw and Partners won a great race to the weather mark at the Beashel Buoy to lead narrowly from Black Knight, with Smeg in third place ahead Vaikobi, GC Sails, Lazarus, Big Foot and Yandoo. Black Knight and Shaw and Partners-NZ had a great battle along Shark Island as they approached the wing mark off the southern end of the island where Black Knight got the upper hand to lead narrowly. GC Sails was also challenging strongly in third place and Yandoo also looked a threat, with her #1 rig, in fourth place. The German team held off the challengers and still had a 5s advantage over Shaw and Partners-NZ as the fleet headed back to the Beashel Buoy for the second time. Positions behind the two leaders remained unchanged with GC Sails in third place ahead of Yandoo, Smeg, Vaikobi, Big Foot, Lazarus, Rag & Famish Hotel (Ben Crafoord), Balmain and Sixt. The beat to Beashel Buoy was decisive as Black Knight extended her lead to 20s over the now second placed GC Sails ahead of Shaw and Partners-NZ, which was 50s back from the leader. After the second spinnaker run back to Clark Island, Black Knight’s lead over GC Sails was still 22s but the hard charging Queensland team reduced this margin back to just 10s as the pair headed for the wing mark and run between the islands to the finish line off Clark Island. Once again, the crew work of the German team was first class and Black Knight powered away from GC Sails on a spectacular run to the finish 1m13s ahead of the determined challenger. The spectacle of the entire fleet finishing at high speed under spinnaker towards Clark Island was not only a brilliant way to finish the regatta, it was one of the best spectacles of the entire season. When racing, keeping the boat fully powered up is vital, so upwind the crew drop-hike over the side keeping their weight out as far as possible, to coax the maximum speed out of their RC44. In the first race today Team Ceeref added another win to their scorecard, their third victory in six races. On 27, they are just one point behind the overall leader Peninsula Petroleum. Artemis Racing put in the best overall score of the day, while Bronenosec Sailing Team won the third and final race leaving them tied with Ceeref. Incredibly at this half way stage, just four points separate first to seventh. In this episode I spend a week towards earning my captains license in sail school on the Saronic bay off the coast of Athens. We learn the ropes while having a blast and Island hoping to places like Hydra, Poros and Aegina. I'm a pirate (of the heart) without a boat, and my sweet home in the hills of Jerusalem got swallowed up last summer in a forest fire. After years of sailing on other peoples boats or rentals, I'm making this long time dream come true and turning the hardship of a destroyed home into a blessing. About the home that burned down: For the last ten years, I've been blessed to live most of the year on a magical, beautiful and abundant hillside in the forest 20 minutes outside of Jerusalem. My friends call the land that I've been living on "heaven." The owners of the land have an enchanted wooden home on the land, and operate a woodshop on the land making biblical harps. My heart, sweat, many memories and dreams are tied to this land. I built many of the features myself, planted many fruit trees and a garden, and it all turned into ash from a forest fire. The harp shop also burned down completely. There is a campaign to help rebuild the harp shop. Nobody humans were hurt or burned on the property, and I'm relearning the lesson about what is and isn't important in life. About the boat: Greece is a great place to get a boat, practice sailing around the islands, and sail to Israel. I'll be looking to get a 39 foot monohull that is tall enough for me to stand in, safe and comfortable enough to live in, and has room for friends. If it has a crows-nest on the top, that would be bonus. Me and sailing: I went to a sailing camp when I was 10 years old for a month in Atlantic City. I didn't really learn to sail, but fell in love with the wind and the waves. Over the last decade, I've co-captained a few epic sailing adventures in the Caribbean with my clone (twin), family and friends. There is a really nice mix of deep tranquility and bliss....AND great adventure, problem solving and dancing with nature and the unknown. I LOVE IT!
