Film 30. And now for something completely different. Most of my recent videos and posts have featured my small boat sailing, in particular my Chat 18 catamaran and my dinghy racing and coaching. More videos on those to come, but I thought it was now time to post a video of my bigger boat sailing. As you will see, none of these big boats are to my design. Having said that, I always think that a good designer should sail on as many different types of boats as possible. Because that way they can see different ways of doing things and thus improve their own designs. I am also always amazed at how little sailing most designers actually do. It's akin to being a car designer but not driving one. Or a homeless house architect. The monohull is Flica 2, a 70ft Giles designed 12 metre built in 1939, so the last of the prewar 12's and before they became the America Cup boats. See here for more https://laurentgilesarchive.com/product/flica-ii/, but shown here racing in Cowes in 1960 (I recall as a child watching the 12m's fleet race so probably saw Flica racing, of course never dreaming I'd race it myself 20 years later). I sailed it for several months in the Caribbean in the late 1970s, after it had been converted to a ketch rig and was being used as a charter boat. Hard work for 2, sometimes 3, crew and up to 16 guests - especially as the engine was a converted London taxi engine with an offset, controllable pitch propeller, rather than a conventional gearbox. With a draft of nearly 10ft we were always running aground, normally hard to do in the West Indies! But we did also race it, I was then the bowman and it was "exciting" going to windward at 9 knots with the bow going underwater and no lifelines or pulpit! Next is the 54ft Great Britain 4 trimaran designed by Derek Kelsall for Chay Blyth. It won the 1978 Round Britain race. Seen here on its first sail. I sailed it for several months in 1980, mainly 2 handed with skipper Don Wood who, fortunately, is a very skilled sailor. It was challenging picking up moorings under sail with two crew and a 38ft beam! I remember doing a lot of running around on that boat and it was incredibly wet to sail to windward. But also great fun overtaking unsuspecting powerboats. When launched it was almost certainly the fastest offshore boat in the world and was extremely quick in flat water. Finally, a longer clip of me sailing on possibly the most famous west coast USA catamaran, the 63ft Profligate. Designed by Kurt Hughes for Richard Spindler, the founder and editor of Latitude 38, probably the worlds best free boating magazine. https://www.latitude38.com/ Its a huge boat and still seemed empty despite the 15? crew (maybe more!) We are seen here racing in the 80 mile Santa Barbara to King Harbor Race. Whenever I sail in S California I am always amazed by the calm, gentle swells, generally light winds and warm seas. No wonder its called the "Pacific" Ocean. Very different to the choppy, gloomy English Channel! The oil rigs were a surprise though, although the natural oil vents leaking up from the sea floor even more so. I really like these mixed events where monohulls sail against multihulls. The Swiftsure and Cowichan Bay regattas in Canada, the 3 Bridge Fiasco in San Francisco, the Yachting Monthly Triangle and Round the Island race in the UK are all races where I've finished on the podium and as a result beaten, sometimes hundreds, monohulls. Too many cruisers think that multihulls don't sail well. The monohull sailors who race against multihulls in these events know different!
We went out on the Gulf Of Mexico with our friends their TakaCat. Us wanting to move on the ocean have wondered how the Catamaran dinghy performed vs a traditionally dinghy. We were really surprised how well the TakaCat performed at low tied, sometimes we ended up in a foot of water. we could still keep move when we tilled the outboard up. Check Out Deck's Water Adventures https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHlQIxs6tNvwKq33m2WHQLw This TakaCat was 13 foot with a 6 hp 4 cycle outboard that can plane with 2 people. We had 4 people with 2 coolers and could get up to 6 miles an hour but not plane. This was still a lot of fun as we cruised about .5 miles off shore, and then around the canals. My wife was kinda worried about getting out on this dinghy and thought it would not be that stable and getting wet, this wasn't a problem. After spending 5 hours on the water and trying to chase some dolphins down Danielle was in love. She said this would be a great dinghy for us once we get our boat. The great thing was the 5 hours used just over a gallon of gas, but we mostly idled. 📢 Our Website: https://www.chrisdoeswhat.com/ 📢 See Our Recipes: https://www.dininginwithdanielle.com Tools In The Garage: 🛠 Milwaukee 18-Volt Drill and Impact Driver Kit https://amzn.to/366BwxM 🛠 Husky Mechanics Tool Set https://amzn.to/3kuGUzD 🛠 Angle Grinder https://amzn.to/36FaC09 🛠 Forney Easy Weld Welder https://amzn.to/3romDR1 🛠 Welding Helmet https://amzn.to/3wOq58z What We Us In The Kitchen: 🍽 KitchenAid https://amzn.to/3x0T8JY 🍽 Roasting Pans https://amzn.to/3jahTLq 🍽 Cooking Sheet https://amzn.to/3JcEa5O 🍽 Kitchen Utensils Set https://amzn.to/3Kg9xOg 🍽Cutting Boards https://amzn.to/3KhzdKw 🍽 Kitchen Knives https://amzn.to/36USV0d 🍽 Kitchen Oven Safe Pans https://amzn.to/3DGkfuY 💎 Have a Website? Thanks for watching. We hope that we have been able to convey some sense of the beauty of sailing. We hope that through these videos you can see and appreciate that sailing can take you away to another place - another world. There is a rhythm on the water that on a sailboat you consciously, or unconsciously, become a part of. You merge with it and become one with it. Sailing is a partnership between nature and yourself. It brings with it a sense of adventure and a touch of mystery. Sailing is a passion that, as Lawrence Cheek put it "...infuses us with life." When you return to the dock, even on a quiet day, there is a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment. And in that, personal joy and satisfaction along with a yearning to go back out again. Thanks again for watching and sharing our small forays into that other world out on the water. Please remember to SUBSCRIBE; and, give us a LIKE if you would. It costs you nothing but it does help our channel. MUSIC: "Distance" by Anno Domini Beats "Grut" by Patrick Patrikios "Sunset Dream" by Cheel Special thanks to the wonderful musicians that share their talent and allow us to incorporate their creations into our videos. 'Renegade' is a Dehler 34 listed exclusively for sale with YOTI on Sydney Harbour. https://www.yoti.com.au/listing/dehler-34-renegade Launched in just December 2023, Renegade is stamped with a 2024 hull number and is still under warranty. Offered for sale for her original owner, Renegade would suit those considering a new order. The German built Dehler 34 beautifully and successfully blends an agile and responsive performance yacht with a high-quality cruising platform. This is a higher end brand in which its quality becomes obvious when stepping on board. Renegade boasts a very solid list of upgrades chosen to both maximize speed while also offering a very easy to sail package. The performance rig and rudder were chosen along with rod rigging. The upgraded twin black Carbonautica steering wheels nicely compliment these options. Upgraded main and furling genoa are by Quantum plus there is a furling Gennaker from Norths. For ease there is a below deck auto-pilot and the mainsheet winches are electric – the main halyard can be led back and raised with the push of a button. Navigation is by B&G with plotter in the cockpit. There is a large, battened shade awning. Below decks she’s a stunner and a huge step above most cruiser racers. This is a very sensible two cabin layout with master cabin forward with a semi-open bulkhead which increases space. The large head and shower feature the Dehler ‘uni door’ system which separates the shower space and vanity. Renegade was hauled out and anti-fouled in October ’24 and has logged only around 92 engine hours. This one owner vessel is in genuinely sail away condition. Contact Peter Mactier for further details and to arrange an inspection on Sydney Harbour. info@yoti.com.au 02 9960 6222
