THIS is never supposed to happen! On a very calm, dead flat day in the Bahamas. Two rouge waves crashed over and through my sailboat! Situations like these are rare, but if the boat had been sideways, or hatches were left open. Major damage or even my sailboat sinking might have happened. I want this video to show how chaotic the sailing life can be. One day is super easy calm bliss, the next hold on tight this might be it! THAT is the sailing life, and you can either love it, or hate it, or in my case, BOTH! I'm Daniel aka "Adventureman Dan." I've been living on the edge, from one adventure to another for the past nine years. Stating in Central California with my first GoPro, through SoCal, Baja, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Alaska and throughout the whole USA. But for the past five years on my sailboat "Adventureborne" I'm open to unlimited possibilities of where I can go, and what I can do! #waves #tsunami #sailboat
Sometimes living on a boat and being a full-time cruiser requires some tough decision making. This week we're all set to leave Jersey and sail to the UK... until the weather has other ideas. We drop the lines and head out to sea, but then make the tough decision to turn around and head back to port. Would you have done the same? Let us know in the comments below. Thanks for watching! **Would you like your name PERMANENTLY PRINTED inside our catamaran? Check out our Patreon benefits and join today for special benefits. https://www.patreon.com/mjsailing ** Now that our inner hull piece has been attached with the methacrylate, it's time to strengthen that seam by glassing the interior flange. To start off this week, Matt and I go about strengthening the seam to the inner hull. This is where we had just bonded with the methacrylate, and the next step is going through to glass the interior. It will make the area incredibly strong, and leave us with no worries while we're out sailing the high seas. The fiberglass we're using is 1208 - with a chop strand mat to the back, which we received from Griffco Products. **Enter code 10MJSAILING for 10% off your order! THANK YOU to all of our new subscribers. I really can't believe how the channel has just taken off. Our first 7 or 8 episodes had almost no views... and now we are getting 200+ subscribers overnight! Yahoo, I'm riding on cloud 9 :) I hope you enjoy this episode! I will try to upload a new episode every 10 days, so you can expect about 3 videos a month from us. In this episode, we explore another abandoned fortress... although this one is a lot larger and creepier. We also have a few days of sailing in some pretty strong wind, which was a good test of both Magic Carpet and ourselves. The Mediterranean can have some strong wind at times, especially from the North. In fact, the wind even has a name –– "The Mistral." It can make for some challenging but fun sailing. Action packed episode filmed in France around Belle Ile and Ile d Yeu. I nearly hit at least 4 boats in a marina, show a new way to get an anchor up, get to climb to the top of a lighthouse, visit a 700 year old castle, cycle around beautiful French countryside, tow a saucepan behind the boat and get covered in slime. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Canon R50 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Back up is a Canon 200d. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. I also use an Insta 360 and have two drones, a Magic mini2 and Mavic pro Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have limited communications with the outside World. This week, Captain Q finds a one-owner 1999 39' Shannon Cutter rig Sailboat for sale. Having undergone a major refit in 2005 & 2006, this sailboat is ready for offshore, bluewater cruising, whether that's in the Caribbean, trans-Atlantic, or circumnavigation. This boat was up over $400k new so the $109k price is a real saving for what feels like a new boat. ============== Support us ============== Like what we're doing & want to help?? We start today in the galley, where Steve has repurposed the woodstove chimney into as a place where a galley exhaust fan can audition. Cooking aboard this boat has taught Akiva that loud noises happen a short time after the stove turns on, so he's been a pretty anxious boat dog around mealtimes. Steve installs the blower and works out the kinks. Building just about anything from spruce sourced at a lumber yard is a new experience for Steve, and he takes two carefully selected boards to a shop with a family connection to glue the new mizzen boom and shape it up. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! For more review, test, performance data, captain reports and more about the 2015 Boston Whaler 320 Vantage , go to http://www.boattest.com/boats/boat_video.aspx?ID=3311&ref=YT There’s a new player in town for the battle of bowrider supremacy. Boston Whaler has outdone itself with its newest launch, now the largest of the versatile Vantage Series of dual console bowriders. We took a first look at the Miami Boat Show and then gave her a full shakedown shortly after on Biscayne Bay, and found her to be the most capable, and dare we say, elegant of the series. While the video makes its way through the production process, lets look at the report and see just how well this new boat entertains, tows, fishes, dives, lounges, cooks and yes… sleeps.
What's next? We plan our next steps sailing, we prepare our boat for a long season away from the main land, we pimp our dinghy, we sail, we surf, we loose (and find) something to the ocean, we try new products and so on. One thing we are sure, we are gonna continue to explore Brazil for the next months. Steve, Robin, and Akiva are spending the week at a mooring in Mattapoisett while they take care of a few important to-dos before beginning their journey north up the coast of Maine. If you tuned in to last week’s episode, you know that Arabella's engine died just outside the channel going into Cuttyhunk Island. Well, it’s time to see if any permanent damage was done, and if Arabella will be able to fire up its engine again soon. After an oil change and some coaxing, the engine did fire up and ran for a few minutes at idle. However, the oil light came back on pretty much immediately. With plenty of oil and solid oil pressure, Steve is perplexed by what the issue could be...so he called in the experts at Nanni to come take a look. Turns out, there was an airlock in the motor that prevented it from receiving fuel. After some exploring, the airflow is back to normal, the engine is getting fuel, and no serious damage has been done. Phew... Another important to-do is getting Starlink up and running on DC power. While in Harwich Port, Steve and Robin ran their Starlink dish off of shore power. Now that they’re cruising again, there’s no access to shore power, and while Starlink could technically run off their inverters, it’s more efficient to run it off of DC power. Of course, there’s little to no info on how to perform this conversion. Steve's first few attempts unfortunately failed. After getting some useless information from a Starlink tech, Robin and Steve phoned a few friends, who were able to collaborate on a fix. Starlink is officially running off of DC power and good to go, just in time for cruising season. Robin is thrilled to be able to run her business from the cockpit this summer! Of course, since Starlink is now drawing on the boat's battery bank, the amount of power being generated on deck needs to increase. Installing a few more solar panels should do the trick. There are a few more rigid solar panels that could provide more power...but will it be enough to power Starlink? Only time will tell... -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. We explain about the advantages of building a metal boat using this interesting method, that was the main reason why we choose to work with Meta Yachts. If you are interested in building a Meta 43DS Odd and want to know more about it, please email oddlifecrafting@gmail.com We also show our workshop finally ready and the amount of things we were able to fit inside a tiny workshop and explain a little bit about the tools we have inside it thanks to all the partners we have for our projects: @sikagroup @Robland @PIHERCLAMPS @KregToolCompany @famagwerkzeugfabrik3332 @Brennenstuhlofficial We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). The last season has been a dream coming true… we are exploring the Brazilian coast with OUR BOAT that we called Odd.. But wait? What happened to the house? The spectacular J Class - Only 10 were ever built from just 20 designs and their reign lasted less than a decade. In the 1930s they were the most technically advanced yachts in the world. For 87 years they have been the epitome of the America’s Cup. Today, little has changed. And when they rolled into Bermuda, the spectacle was unique.

@Barefoot Doctors Sailing and Travel - Come Barefoot with us as we search for the PERFECT PERFORMANCE CATAMARAN for us as we upgrade from our Leopard 45 and Leopard 50! In this episode we redesign the Portofino 47 into a 52 foot boat and make significant changes to the hull shape to improve performance and increase the ease at which she can rise up out the water to overcome the displacement hull speed. We also discuss how flybridges negatively affect performance and have to decide if we are happy to sacrifice that for better performance.... We have further in-depth discussions with Raffaele about whether to have daggerboards or centreboards, power systems, air tight voids and more... Find out the exciting innovative features that Portofino is offering with transom doors, central engines with shafts, front trampoline ladder to the the water and now lifting keeps and Shallow draft. So this all means that the only outstanding factor is to get confirmation of the boats performance so we look into the process for getting VPPs (Velocity Performance Program) or Polars done to get an accurate idea of what she will do on the water.... Come Barefoot with us as we move deeper into the Portofino Brand! This was the one of the most difficult and nightmarish sailing experiences of my life. The damage to Paragon's bowsprit and rig forced me to put off plans for sailing on to the Pacific and instead I had to limp back to North Carolina for repairs. Today I'm thankful beyond words for everything that happened. If I hadn't returned to the states then I wouldn't have met the most wonderful woman... Now Monique and I are preparing to sail aboard Paragon on to the Pacific and around the world as many times as we can. On Friday, Jan 22, 2015 Mike Gerrie wrote: First I would like to reiterate what has been said many times before that you definitely did the right thing helping and good for you. Since the episode abruptly ends with no update as to what happened. It would be nice if you included a note as to what happens finally to Cha, Cha in the description of video. Did they get towed or left in the water? Thanks for the suggestion Mike, How's this? After the collision, Cha Cha cut the towline, and I put safe distance between us. No one was hurt. We both drifted under bare poles. I wanted to cry when I saw the damage. Paragon’s enormous stainless steel bowsprit was bent badly all over and in different directions. The thick steel attachment points to the bow sides were bent up by 20 degrees. The bobstay turnbuckle bolt was bent 20 degrees. I was worried about any of it failing and losing the mast and so tied a halyard to a bow cleat. Such misery! We were in range of Bermuda Radio and reported everything. Throughout the night as Cha Cha drifted helplessly under bare poles, I motored circles around her as we waited for a towing vessel arranged by Bermuda Radio. In the morning we attempted several times to continue our towing, but soon gave up as the winds and seas and exhaustion made it too difficult to even get the towline across. Finally in the afternoon a 150’ mega-yacht sailing vessel named Titan 14 arrived to continue towing Cha Cha, and I sped off for St. George’s Harbor, praying to make it into the anchorage without any more problems and before dark. After jury rigging Paragon in Bermuda, I sailed on to the Caribbean for a winter, and then back to North Carolina for 3 years of repairs and renovations. I never saw Cha Cha again, but heard that she was sailed back to Newport (without engine) and left at anchor in the harbor for so long that the city somehow took possession of her and auctioned her off. We may have left Elements behind, but we're not finished with our sailing just yet! After hopping on a plane and traveling nearly half way around the world, we land in Bangkok to start our 90 days outside the EU. And luckily for us, we're still managing to fit in a little sailing while we're gone! We're working with Island Spirit Yacht Charters out of Koh Chang to take out one of their catamarans for the next two weeks! Our first task is to get down to this island on the SE side of Thailand, and when we arrive we have a week to acclimate ourselves to a new culture we have not experienced before. Then, we provision ourselves up and take the local version of a taxi to the charter base on the south end of the island. After receiving a tour and the run down on this boat that would now be ours for the next two weeks, we're set loose once again into tropical waters and white sand beaches. Much love from Thailand! In this episode we document how we organised Panama's first ever sailing regatta in the town of Bocas Del Toro. We set a goal to get 30 boats racing in the bay, and got a total of 32 boats on the day. All proceeds went to the Give and Surf non-profit organisation, where we managed to raise $1,373. This organisation aims at helping children education in the wider Bocas Del Toro Region, and it was very rewarding donating to such a good cause. SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged 2012 Lagoon 450 Catamaran bought in Tortola, BVI at the beginning of 2018. This year, IMO's Day of the Seafarer campaign aims to inspire young people to consider a career at sea and learn more about this viable and exciting profession.
It's finally time to... Well, after sailing the Brazilian cost for over a year we arrived in the Caribbean. This week we sailed from Grenada to Union Island in Saint Vincent and Grenadines and... you need to watch the video to find out, hehe. We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. Check out our website to know more about it https://www.oddlifecrafting.com/blog We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams.
