It's the perfect motor in (no wind for sailing though, unfortunately) where we had sun, warmth, and even dolphins to greet us on our way! Once we had a slip secured though, it was time to get to work. Running ALL over town, we hunted through hardware stores, auto part stores, and chandleries to get all the little necessities to make Elements 100% ready for her survey. When the big day came we weren't allowed to be there for the tonnage portion (COVID restrictions at the marina), so the three of us hung out at the harbour until it was time for the onboard survey. Which, lol, I did no filming of because I assumed the guy would not want a camera following him around as he worked. Darn it. Can Archimedes help save our race boat? After a 2 year refit on the hard stand in Fiji, transforming our open 66 into a family cruiser, we are finally floating again and now find ourselves fixing things underwater! A few weeks ago our gearbox stopped working - leaving us engine-less just as we were about to enter a reef pass and the night before a low pressure system was coming through https://youtu.be/c4esY31IW1o In our previous video https://youtu.be/NrvSVEcaO6E we investigated down below only to find that our hopes of there being a simple problem such as propeller blades being blocked by a rope or piece of wood dashed. Our second best hope was that the issue is with the bronze propeller body, and that its interior is corroded and no longer grips the stainless steel shaft of the sail drive. If instead the problem is with the interior of the sail drive, especially the lower part, this has the potential for being a major issue for us, as it’s almost impossible to haul out again here in Fiji, due to the effort and expense involved in heeling our boat over to reduce our nearly 5 metre draft to enter channel into the marina https://youtu.be/w2yHOcp_fII But before we worry too much about this, the next step is to remove the propeller and check the interior of the body. To do this we attached an old piece of sail to the underneath of the boat to be sure not to lose any pieces! As due to a lack of scuba equipment, this job was going to be tackled by free diving In the last video we’d taken the propeller blades off, so next up, it’s time to take off the body of the propeller... The part we are looking for is called vibration damper Volvo part number 872809. Soooo maybe we shouldn’t have moaned about being bored in our last video because things were about to get CrAzY!!! No in all honesty, we are seriously grateful that our journey crossing the Atlantic went exactly as it did beforehand and our time aligned perfectly with finding this stranded man on his dismasted yacht. It was a French boat and at the time we had found out that his boat had been dismasted by a squall three days prior to us finding him. We can only imagine how scared and uncomfortable he must have been rolling around the Atlantic waves and not knowing how long it would be for. When we saw him and edged closer, we saw him wave a little pink cloth to get our attention. Once we grabbed the line he put out for us, he fell to his knees and prayed. A vision we will never forget. In this video you will see when we first spotted the dismasted yacht and the stranded man rolling around the seas. We immediately took out all our spare rope and rigged up a tow line as best we could. As night set in, the sea state gets worse and we try to call the surrounding coastguards for help incase the tow line snaps again during the night… you won’t believe what happens at the end of this video 🙈🙊 ♡ Welcome to our Sailing Vlog - Sailing Coco! Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. A lot of boat work is starting this week! After all... after 2 years sailing the boat needs some maintenance. We took 2 days off to finally explore the Grenada Island and it was really cool. In the work yard, we have been busting our butts inside the tent to get things knocked off our list while we still have the ability to work without the aid of heaters. Matt's big push for the month of November is to get as many of our flush deck hatch molds in as possible. Once they've been glassed (and hopefully we'll cover that more in next week's episode), he has to measure and cut the space in the deck where they'll sit - and then get them bonded in. We do take a break from the work and get on a charter boat for the day, where we've spent the past few months trying to raise money for Fish For a Cure. On on the Chesapeake Bay, we try to catch the biggest rockfish of all the 70-some boats participating. And, we have a heck of a great day while trying. Then it's back to work, where I take over the screen and show some of the fairing I've been up to in the master hull. Sailing in the River Blackwater, I managed to get my 20' Norfolk Gypsy stuck aground on the bank of a creek at the worst possible time: the peak of high tide. As the tide went out, my boat was left stranded four feet above the river bed. And I wasn't sure if I would be able to get her off again. This is how it turned out and the lessons I learned.
