With only 4 people, we manage to lift our 25 ft, 300 pound transom into place. In this week's episode, we focus on not only lifting the transom to get it up to the bridge deck, but find what's necessary to get it to, more or less, fit like a glove. We have four people and a set of scaffolding, but you'll have to tune in to find out how we use it! One thing we did realize is that our two aft bulkheads were just a little too high, but we needed the transom in place to figure out exactly how much to cut down and where. So, guess who gets to slide into a space just big enough to fit their body so they can make the markings on the bulkheads? We hope you enjoy! Much love from Annapolis! Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. As we sail south on the Inside Passage in British Columbia we stumble upon another Swedish boat way older than Ran. We visit a first nation village and take a bath in the hot spring of Bishop Bay while watching a pod of humpback whales. We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built Beason 40 in aluminium, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter, January 2016, and started sailing south along the coast of Europe. This is my complete step by step guide on "How I Pick, Plan, & Sail 100nm Solo". I've been in Antigua for the past month, but now I need to sail Nortwest to Saint Martin. A distance of 100 nautical miles, and I'll be doing it all alone. Here is exactly how I do this entire process from start to finish. 1. Pick My Final Destination (Why it's the best one to stay at as my new home.) 2. Pick My Sailing Route (A to B to C to D. Antigua to Barbuda, easy trade-downwind to Saint Barts, to SXM) 3. Decide what a good weather window is (Wind, current, swell, jewlls in the atmosphere) 4. Identify drop off routes & alternative anchorages(in case of failures or emergency) (I never use marinas) 5. Wait for that weather window (sometimes you take a bad one rather than wait) 6. Scrap Everything, New plan (because something changed or there is a new weather window. Redo 1-5. In my case, there is a 15-20knots broad reach!!!) 7. Check out of current country (easy enough, but need to give yourself the right amount of time) 8. Float Plan with other Competent Sailor (Talk to someone who knows you, your sailing ability, your boat and it's ability. Someone who understands the ocean and sailing. So if something does go wrong, they know who to call or what to do.) 9. Final prep (stowing or strapping down everything encase of worst seas. Always plan for the worst in the ocean, meal prep, water, entertainment,...) 10. Set sail from Antigua (leaving the anchorage early early at dark because I know the area thankfully and have mentally prepared ahead of time.) 11. Sailing The Distance Alone (LOOOOOT to talk about here. Troubles along the way. Trimming the sails. Checking up on my navigation frequently. Making sure I'm on the best course. How I keep safe, fed, hydrated, entertained....) 12. Final Approach (Sailing into “French side” SXM in the dark and anchoring. Note that sailing into a place at dark is not normal if you don't know the area and can be very dangerous.) 13. Into the country (Waking up early the next morning, ducking the bridge, anchoring in the lagoon, get a French coffee & croissant, check into French side of SXM, back on boat and finally done! Bonus: Final review of the whole process..... (I am not a professional sailor, but this is what's worked for me over the years and thousands of nautical miles I've sailed. With limited boat yards in Malaysia, we have to explore all our options, including the local fishing vessel yard... With a green light to haul out in the coming days, we leave the city and the fancy marina and head to sea. Penang is connected to the mainland by 2 very long bridges and Nandji has only passed under a few bridges so the novelty of this was amusing. Clear of the bridges and back into the Malacca straits, we up wind sail through the day and night to get south to the boatyard. Bonita continually grows rounder and due to covid restrictions tightening around the country, this could be the last sail as a duo. Baby is coming and the nesting begins!! With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed and our home ended up on the reef. We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! Ready to sail across the Indian Ocean, we were only days away from leaving when the pandemic begun closing countries around us... We are stuck for now, but enjoying the slower pace! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! As liveaboard cruisers, we’re forced to learn how to do new things all the time, whether we want to or not. Luckily for Kirk, he thrives on figuring things out for himself. Then our chosen lifestyle must mean he’s found fulfillment and happiness for life, right!? Au contraire. It’s easy to get lost in a sea of daily frustrations, losing sight of the bigger goals. Learning new things and figuring out how to solve problems can be incredibly frustrating in the short-term. But these frustrations are only temporary. All it takes is a moment to step back and remember that working toward a goal isn’t just about achieving that goal. The experience itself holds much to be treasured. Hope you enjoy!
