When checking into Marina Hemingway, the port captain told us that we could not go ashore anywhere along the N.W Cuban Coast except Cayo Levisa between Havana and Cabo de San Antonio because there weren't any facilities to officially check into on any other coastal towns. We had read in Cheryl Barr's Cruising Guide to Cuba that we could go ashore in a cool fishing village called Puerto Esperanza and hitch a ride to Viñales, BUT this was not the case in 2017. So, we headed to Cayo Levisa to see if we could find a way ashore for an inland rock climbing adventure! While in Cayo Levisa we explored the island and took little shit out for a snorkeling adventure and we spent the whole day with reef after reef to ALL to ourselves! Did you like this video? Our first anchoring experience for the season was interesting. A huge low pressure came in over the Salish Sea and we were right in it. We had picked a safe anchorage but didn’t expect that the dinghy would capsize with the outboard on it! We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat Ran, a custom built Beason 40 in aluminium and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter in January 2016. This week, we find ourselves all over the place as we jump around from one small project to the next. First we have the side decks brought in with the help from a few of the guys around the yard, and once all the protective plastic is removed, it makes such a difference in the look of the boat. We also bond in the shower pan for our master bath. A step that is necessary before we can begin any of the structural webbing which sits above it. Then, just for a bit of fun, Matt and I take a drive through the eastern shore with our friend Tucker to get a Christmas tree for the marina office. We motor our Endeavour 32 from St. Petersburg to Port Charlotte to be hauled out at Charlotte Harbor Boat Storage and trucked over to J & R Marine. This trip was a little risky because we had to go offshore in a boat that doesn't have portlights, grab rails, deck hardware, or sails rigged. We prepared by making sure we had an active Boat US and EPirb membership should anything happen along the way. We also made sure to have a good weather window. The trip went great. One thing I wanted to mention that isn't in the video is that we added a hazard to the location in Active Captain where we hit the object in the canal on the way to Charlotte Harbor Boar Storage. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage.
