Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. The Boat Life travel adventure continues... We have a good feeling about this sailboat. It could be the one! Living on a sailboat could be a reality soon. The Boat Life could be on the water sailing if we buy this boat! Sailboat shopping has taken much longer than I thought it would or hoped I guess. This Island Packet could be home for the boat life. Watch as we get closer to living on a yacht. Our offer was accepted. We really feel like nomads traveling around looking for a sailboat to call home. After downsizing, it has taken a while to get here, but this boat has everything we wanted on a sailboat and a dingy. This is The Boat Life. Nic Morganti and Melissa Auman are moving onto a sailboat. The plan was sell everything, buy a boat, live on the boat, and travel and explore the Caribbean and the world while living aboard! Simple plan, but lots to learn and do along the way. Join our adventure as we sail away, live on a sailboat, and explore life aboard. Thanks for watching! Ciao! Despite all the sailing we've done in the past year, this is really our first day sailing around the world. Day 1 will be in Guadaloupe, which will mark the furthest East we sail. From now on we'll be heading West, and the next time we arrive in Guadaloupe we will still be sailing West - which is pretty incredible when you think about it. The only question now is how, which way, and where to next? Click the play button to find out! POSTING DAILY ON SOCIAL: https://www.instagram.com/the_sailing_family/ https://www.facebook.com/the-sailing-family-voyage/ ----------------- ABOUT US: Welcome aboard. We are a family of five sailing around the world on our "dream boat," a performance catamaran named "Archer." Ten years ago, before kids, we sailed a Lagoon 380 named "Honeymoon" halfway around the world to Sydney, Australia. Along the way we shared our experiences with family and friends via YouTube, and by happenstance created one of the first sailing channels. But more than anything, we realized what an incredible experience that first trip was and that someday we wanted to do it again, only this time with kids. We want to share with them the importance of taking time to be with family. To show them a world outside of the one they grew up in. We want them to appreciate how lucky we are to experience (and to care for) the natural beauty of this world. But mostly we want to spend time with our kids during these formative years and create lasting memories as a family. That's why we are sharing our videos weekly - thanks for watching! OUR BOAT is a Ferrari red Outremer 51 performance cruising catamaran. We chose this boat as it has been specifically designed for the purpose of bluewater sailing. It was designed and built to withstand the stress of sailing multiple times around the world safely and in comfort. It's also a speed demon, which is important when you want to cover large distances of water before the weather changes. Lastly, it's backed by the manufacturer with outstanding customer service and aftermarket support, so we believe she will hold her value well. And, she's nice on the eyes too. OUR ROUTE has taken us from the Boston/Cape Cod area of the United States down to the Caribbean and then on to the Panama Canal. At the time of posting this we are dealing with a repair in the South Pacific, and in 2020 we hope to be in New Zealand and Southeast Asia. By 2021 we will be in the Med and close to completing our circumnavigation. PLEASE COMMENT!: As a "family channel," we are required to actively monitor all comments, but we still want to hear from you. Tell us what you think! THANKS for watching all. Subscribe right now and never miss an episode!
In this episode, I am sharing my experience and knowledge of handling my Bavaria 55 mass-production yacht safely through a violent storm. It’s a big difference between racing and being on a long distance sail in remote places. Some might jump to conclusions thats wrong. This is a defensive way of sailing in winds above 55 kts and preparation for above 60. I have a huge responsibility as people watching can and often will copy my strategy. Hence the fact this is not bragging or over selling. It’s realistic and safety in mind m. This is a more technical video where I reveal my strategies in real-life heavy-weather sailing. We are talking above 55+ knots of wind where things really starts to happen. My strategies with a storm sail and reefed Main has proven to work above 60 knots of wind. The last episode I was not rigged with storm sail as it was not predicted. So I’m showing the limitations and what I did when seeing 57. Not knowing how much it was going to be, I took a break to decide next move. If it was going to reach 60 I would have to either continue with my safety mode, or go with reef 3 only, meaning going up against the wind to get Main up with my violent storm reef. Without telling you how to, I am sharing how I do. This might not work for you or even with your boat. And this is my point. I recommend knowing not only your own limitations but even your boat's limitations. I even share why a heaving to strategy could be the fast track to send your rig into the ocean. The same goes for a furling genoa. This does have some limitations and can be dangerous. Lots of dismasting incidents occur for some obvious reasons but are somehow rarely talked about. Human error leading to serious problems is often mistaken for poor quality, and very popular to point at production yachts instead of looking in the mirror. Lots of myths false information, and even dangerous advice. Not all strategies work on all boats. Different sizes and hull designs often give different results. If I did not know my boat's limitations, if I had not been on top of maintenance, and even having experience my rigg would come down. This is key to understanding sailing safely and surviving a violent storm. Hopefully, some will find this valuable and even point some of you in a new direction learning more about how to deal with situations on your own. As normal I do not claim to have the blueprint, and nor do I say this is how to. I'm sharing what's proven to work for me. I am even pointing out the biggest and most frequent misunderstanding. A cutter stay is good but not the best solution for heavy-weather sailing either. Unless you only have a small storm jib there for above 50 kt sailing. I still have not met anyone with this permanently, instead, they have slightly smaller genoa mostly used to fly wing on wing. Meaning we would have the exact same challenge. Changing sails is my biggest challenge alone at sea, and this means my violent storm solution does have an Achilles heel. I can not handle a violent storm as I want to if not planned. So what I share is the consequence of a weather prediction turning out to be seriously out of target. European models on predictions are normally extremely good. However local phenomenon can sometimes be missed. A storm jib in a bag attached works fine, but my experience is it can not be furled in. So as a solo sailor with a storm jib thats not possible to furle create another challenge. What to do when it reach 75. Even though this is season 6 on YouTube I did not make that many videos in the beginning. Before full-time sailing, I sailed several seasons in the Mediterranean prior to, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and have also been an active regatta sailor. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and have been sailing ever since. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. It's time to head to Camden, Maine for some dockside boat repairs among the schooners in this very famous and picturesque pocket harbor. The cranse iron, or bowsprit cap, seems to have been a piece that was cast with imperfections. It did serve Victoria for a good long time without issue, and the hardware failure wasn't catastrophic. We don't expect the same thing to happen with other reclaimed pieces of hardware around Arabella. There's a really sweet Akiva check in at the end of the episode, so if you're a big Akiva fan (or if you have concerns about how he's adjusting to boat life) and want to know how he's doing, do stick around until the very end. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! How to Gybe (aka Jibe) a Sail Boat If you want to refine jibing/gybing IRL, get yourself on one of our ASA courses, as this is a critical skill for your 103/104 certification, as taught in our Intermediate Course :) https://sailingvirgins.com/courses/ Introduction Gybing (aka Jibing) is turning a boat so its stern passes through the wind. It is the opposite of a tack. The angle that the boat will turn in a typical gybe is around 60-100 degrees Two types of gybing are covered here: standard jibe and slam jibe Some people are afraid of gybing. However, it is fine if a decent method is followed. When hearing the term “gybe”, think “mainsheet”. This is the most important line in a gybe. Gybing the foresail is no big deal, just don’t dump the old working sheet (if the sail goes in front of the boat, it could take you ages to get it back in) If all else fails, wear round (other names for this are Chicken Gybe and perhaps Wending) Pre-Gybe Helm brings the boat to between a broad reach and dead run. Then the helm makes the call “Prepare To Gybe” (or whatever is agreed on your boat - some people prefer "Standby To Gybe") Secure the traveller Get out of the “hot zone” (where the mainsheet will cross the boat) Don’t sit on the coamings (above the seat in a cockpit) or else you may get intimate with a winch. Standard Gybe Steps Bring the mainsheet in so the boom is near the center Helm makes the call “Turning” then starts the turn Mainsheet trimmer removes the handle Helm makes call “Gybe…. HO” with the HO happening when the leech flips over Helm counter-steers to ensure the boat stays on a straight heading Mainsheet trimmer eases the mainsheet Ease foresail working sheet while taking in on the opposite sheet Slam Gybe Steps Ensure the mainsheet zone is clear and traveller is centered Put the vang on in order to pull down the boom (and tension the leech) Helm makes the call “Standby to Gybe”, then “Turning” at which point he starts the turn Make sure someone (it could be the helm) guides the mainsheet across Smooth Gybe You want to keep the speed of your boat up during a gybe This reduces the stress on your rigging and makes the gybe much smoother Bring the mainsheet in, and just when it’s close to center, start the turn As soon as the gybe-ho call happens, ease out the mainsheet and counter-turn the wheel. Summary Gybing is safe if done properly Lock your traveler, think about the mainsheet Counter-turn as soon as the boat gybes, to stop risk of heading straight into a close haul on teh other tack Ease that mainsheet as soon as the boat gybes Be clear on your calls Have fun! By crossing the finish line of the ancestor of the Vendée Globe in Les Sables d'Olonne this Thursday at 21:43:47 CET, the South African sailor has achieved one of the greatest accomplishments in ocean racing. Winner of the Golden Globe race, without assistance or technology, after 235 days, 5 hours, 44 minutes and 4 seconds of racing (final time will be determined after the calculation of penalties for using fuel and bonuses), Kirsten became the first woman to win a solo round-the-world race under sail. This achievement was celebrated in Les Sables d'Olonne, now more than ever the world capital of single-handed ocean racing. (c) Ville des Sables d'Olonne

It's been a while since I sailed a multiple day passage all by myself...so my belly is a little upside down with my usual pre-departure anxiety nausea. But it's time to untie the lines and to sail down 500nm to Ecuador. The passage will be a bit of a challenge due to the strong currents and partially light and turning winds...Both conditions in which it is good to have a working autopilot. Too bad if that precious tool stops working about half way through the trip... Ever wonder what we do with our lives while we're not busy with boat projects? In this video we give you a look at a few of the things we do when the cameras are normally off, like trying to find the best shower stall at the end of a workday, cooking dinner in our galley, and enjoying a beautiful sunset from our cockpit. It may be a far cry from the normal cruising life we hope to resume shortly, but we make the best of what we have while we have it. Thank you *so* much to everyone who left comments or question about what they would like to know about our life on the hard. Refitting the boat is a major undertaking. We knew it would be, but knowing it and living it are two very different things. It seemed like we always had 4 projects going at once and there was never enough roo to put everything. Not to mention we were living on the boat at the time and had to have room for such basic things as eating and sleeping! This is the highlights of the first month of the refit. It jumps around a bit because that’s how it really was. Not to mention Ryan was still working full time at this point! But we made good progress at getting at completely replimbing the freshwater system, putting new stickers on, and starting to rebuild our hull. WANT A SHIRT? It's working mode on Ran! The hull is being sanded and prepped and we are doing projects down below as well as in the cockpit. One of the projects is to shorten the boom! We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat Ran, a custom built Beason 40 in aluminium and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter in January 2016. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds take us. http://www.TheSailingFamily.com - After a break in Messina Klaus and his friend Thomas sailed along the North Shore of Sicily from Messina to Marsala. They made a stop in San Vito Lo Capo - a very nice Spot - to meet the rest of the TSF crew. TheSailingFamily.com is a documentary film project about a family who just bought a sailboat and started sailing in July 2016. The next episodes will take place in Sicily in July and August 2016. Be a part of the adventure! We hope by sharing this adventure you will find some inspiration in your life. If doesn’t have to be sailing. It can be anything at all. Just take a few minutes every day for yourself, breathe deep and relax, and don’t forget to SMILE big time! Two new engines within months of each other?! I made it to Fort Lauderdale and after a month I got my second new Nanni engine put into my boat.
