We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved in to our sailboat RAN, a one-off aluminium built Beason 40, and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started sailing south along the coast of Europe. Some smaller outboard boats and dinghies don't have a steering wheel. Instead, they have a tiller. A tiller is a handle attached directly to a boat's outboard engine that is both for steering and the throttle. BoatUS Magazine's Lenny Rudow shows you how to drive a tiller steer outboard boat using his crab skiff, but you might find an outboard tiller on a dinghy as well. One of the advantages of driving a tiller-steer outboard is its maneuverability. A tiller steer boat will turn effortlessly, even at idle speeds, but it does take some time to get used to it because you push and pull the tiller to steer instead of turning a wheel. And it's not always intuitive. Also, you have to rotate the handle at the same time for more or less speed. Another advantage of tiller steering is that it takes up less room on the boat, perfect for carrying passengers or offering more space to move around. First in a new series we're producing about docking techniques and boat handling skills. We all get pretty good at learning to handle our own boats over time, but if we step onto a friend's boat or take the helm on a bareboat charter yacht that we're unfamiliar with, we quickly remember that each boat has its own personality and quirky behaviour. http://tulasendlesssummer.com On our cruise down to Boca the small weak shackle clip broke which was holding our tender to our tow line. Thank god I was paying attention and spotted it early and thank god the conditions weren't bad. I replaced it with a nice thick shackle that definitely won't break. We made it down to Boca safely and will continue to head South before crossing the Gulf.

In this week's video we depart from our home in the Florida Keys in route to do some of the best deep sea saltwater fishing Florida has to offer. We spend the morning offshore fishing for different pelagic species with little to no luck, therefor we decided to make a switch and try deep drop fishing for queen snapper. We quickly transitioned from bottom fishing key largo to the deep depths off Islamorada. Upon arrival we immediately started to bring up Queen Snapper & Rutter Fish with ease. After filling multiple stringers with fish, the sun began to fall and we decided to make a run back to our Florida Keys home in order to clean and cook our catch. Stephanie prepared a delicious cajun style seafood dish that was absolutely fantastic. There after we close out the video by reminiscing on the day while spreading some positive energy. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. Was this the most stupid or awesome thing we’ve ever done? We can’t decide. On a 1200 Mile sailing passage from Tahiti to Niue, the weather swings and we have a tricky decision to make. We choose to divert our course to a remote atoll to the extreme West of French Polynesia. Maupihaa, otherwise known as Mopelia seems like a god place to hang out and wait for our weather window. The entrance to the island is a narrow and intimidating pass with a strong current. We have no way of accessing the tide information so just have to chance it and hope the current isn’t too strong to overpower us. Scary stuff, guys.  Diving on the anchor, we are visited by a shark, barracuda and eagle ray which tells us we’re probably going to like it here. Yup, we’re in for a treat. Between exploring the empty beaches and freediving the pass we are gobsmacked by the incredible nature this untouched island has to offer. After last week's cutless bearing scare (check out the video here: ) we're trying to use our engine a whole lot less (we are a SAILBOAT after all!) so we get our sails up and make the 20 mile bash against the current (Adam explains how you can check for this too prior to heading out for a sail).
