We're building our boat with vinyl ester resin - and they're OUT nationwide!! This week's video is a smattering of a few different things, trying to catch up from when we were preparing the Pacemaker to launch (late June) to starting work on the floors of the catamaran (early July). We also give away the Viking, which was a sad day, but we show you the transformation of when we first stepped foot on her last fall, to what she looks like when we hand her over. Plus, we run into the issue that we can not get our hands on vinyl ester resin, so we need to find other projects to keep us busy, which do not involve it. Luckily, we can do the floors in a polyester resin instead. This will be a long process that *should* keep us busy for a few weeks, and Matt explains the technical side of how all floors will be water tight spaces. We discovered that the shaft was bent and needed straightening, which in turn rapidly wore out our cutlass bearing. After removing the drive system and cutlass bearing months ago, the new cutlass finally arrived in the post. Without a machine to press the cutlass in, I get creative and Macguiver that puppy home. With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed and our home ended up on the reef. We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! Ready to sail across the Indian Ocean, we were only days away from leaving when the pandemic begun closing countries around us... We are stuck for now, but enjoying the slower pace as we have our first baby on the way to be born overseas! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World! This week I finish the fridge box build (except the last two coats of pigmented epoxy). The fridge is now ready for installation and for hooking up the compressor and holding plate. The wood for the galley only needs the last coat of varnish (waiting for dry weather). I also managed to get a little bit more fairing compound on the hull. The wind disappears and drifting in the current we are heading towards the busy shipping lane... This engine will be the death of us! https://www.sailingnandji.com This week on Sailing Nandji, we return to the islands of Karimunjawa to fix our headsail halyard and get some diesel so we are able to continue our journey towardsMalaysia. The further north we sail, the closer to the equator we go meaning light calm winds, smooth seas and massive squalls! We battle through relentless strong winds and rain to get the island of Belitung in sight. Needing to now traverse a busy skinny shipping lane through the dark night, we challenge ourselves with one hour shifts to concentrate on the compass as we upwind sail near reefs and islands. As the sun rises on our 6th day at sea, the wind disappears and we try to motor but nothing happens... Slowly in the 1 knot current we drift back towards the shipping lane... Who needs a Gearbox anyway... Ah, We Do!! We are a young couple with a dog, who with no sailing experience, bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing around the Pacific! We have been in Indonesia for a couple of months cruising and are now high tailing to Malaysia for boat work. How do you get your sailboat ready for a day trip? We, and a group of friends, take off on a quick day trip to Koh Yao Yai in Phuket Thailand. We prepare the boat prior to leaving, check everything and raise the anchor to set off for the day. Good group of people for this weeks adventure. We are joined by Dean and Macus from Seychelles. Both just did an Indian Ocean crossing on a Bali 4.3 and then had to quarantine in Phuket for 14 days. Dean is a delivery captain with over 2 decades of sailing experience. It was a pleasure to have him aboard to teach us and to pick his brain. Macus was his engineer on the delivery crossing. It was his first major delivery and his first delivery was across the Indian Ocean! Kyle is from South Africa and is learning just like we are. He got stuck in Phuket during Covid and was originally here for marine training in the yachting industry. Finally Yen joins us, rather we join him on his newly purchased Fountaine Pajot Bahia 46. Yen, while also a noobie to sailing, has had the opportunity to get his boat out on the water and gain some experience sailing since purchasing it. Koh Yao Yai are 3 rock formations just off the island between the world famous Phi Phi islands and Phuket. While one formation is only a few meters tall, the other two go straight up out of the water and have a lot of green on them to create a stunning setting. Yen gets some stunning aerial views with the drone as I struggled to keep reception with mine and have problems landing it back on the boat for the first time. BTW, if you catch a drone, turn it upside down, it will automatically turn itself off....thanks Yen! Probably the single best thing about entering our sailing life has been all the new people we have meet. It is also very nice to have such a huge diversity of cultures. Learning the world is not only about going places and seeing them for yourself, but also talking to the people that are from there. What the sailboats Moody 41ds and the Garcia Exploration 60 have in commom? We toured these 2 boats at Grand Pavois in La Rochelle, one of the largest international boat shows. We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). The last season has been a dream coming true… we are exploring the Brazilian coast with OUR BOAT that we called Odd.. But wait? What happened to the house?
