Finally, after several weeks of work and a couple of trial runs, that did not work out so well, Karl and me have left Shelter Bay Marina with my sister on bord. And this time for real. There is no coming back :). We went on a short coastal trip to Portobelo, which is around 20nm from Shelter Bay but still took us seven hours because of wind and waves from the front. The preparations for the Atlantic crossing are on-going i San Sebastián, La Gomera and we make a DIY anchor chain box and Q-flag. The boat neighbors give us a piece of the 95 kg Tuna they caught and we make sushi on board. In the Antarctica Sailing Mini Series Pt. 2 Johan sail to the Antarctic Peninsula and meet a lot of animals on the islands, rough weather and navigates between icebergs! We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved in to our sailboat RAN, a one-off aluminium built Beason 40, and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started sailing south along the coast of Europe. Some smaller outboard boats and dinghies don't have a steering wheel. Instead, they have a tiller. A tiller is a handle attached directly to a boat's outboard engine that is both for steering and the throttle. BoatUS Magazine's Lenny Rudow shows you how to drive a tiller steer outboard boat using his crab skiff, but you might find an outboard tiller on a dinghy as well. One of the advantages of driving a tiller-steer outboard is its maneuverability. A tiller steer boat will turn effortlessly, even at idle speeds, but it does take some time to get used to it because you push and pull the tiller to steer instead of turning a wheel. And it's not always intuitive. Also, you have to rotate the handle at the same time for more or less speed. Another advantage of tiller steering is that it takes up less room on the boat, perfect for carrying passengers or offering more space to move around. First in a new series we're producing about docking techniques and boat handling skills. We all get pretty good at learning to handle our own boats over time, but if we step onto a friend's boat or take the helm on a bareboat charter yacht that we're unfamiliar with, we quickly remember that each boat has its own personality and quirky behaviour.
