OUR BOAT is a Ferrari red Outremer 51 performance cruising catamaran. We chose this boat as it has been specifically designed for the purpose of bluewater sailing. It was designed and built to withstand the stress of sailing multiple times around the world safely and in comfort. It's also a speed demon, which is important when you want to cover large distances of water before the weather changes. Lastly, it's backed by the manufacturer with outstanding customer service and aftermarket support, so we believe she will hold her value well. And, she's nice on the eyes too. OUR ROUTE has taken us from the Boston/Cape Cod area of the United States down to the Caribbean and then on to the Panama Canal. At the time of posting this we are dealing with a repair in the South Pacific, and in 2020 we hope to be in New Zealand and Southeast Asia. By 2021 we will be in the Med and close to completing our circumnavigation. This week we sail through the Gibraltar Strait, a famous and historic narrow stretch of water that separates Europe from Africa and the Atlantic from the Mediterranean. There's a lot going on. And it is indescribably cool to pass through this strait and see Morocco on one side, Spain on the other and know that you're leaving the Atlantic ocean. We get some really great weather for the crossing and although it's a very early start from Cadiz, the sunrise is gorgeous and we manage to arrive in Gibraltar before dark. In episode 18 we continue the work on RAN in Las Palmas. We construct a new anchor roller for our new 25 kg anchor and build a new box for the plotter and the instruments. We celebrate the summer solstice (Fiesta de San Juan) together with thousands of Gran Canarians on the beach and watch the amazing fireworks. After almost four weeks of work we finally feel ready to leave Las Palmas and we sail to the south coast of Gran Canaria. We experience the famous acceleration zones and the wind gusts up to 40 knots on our way to Puerto de Mogán. We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved in to our sailboat RAN, a one-off aluminium built Beason 40, and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started sailing south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds takes us. We're AMOST to the stage where we can begin putting in our bulkheads!! But we have just a few preparatory steps before we can get there. Although the bulkhead placements were provided by Max Cruise when we received the hull, we've made a few small tweaks, and now we need to go through and mark the new positions where all the bulkheads will be placed. First we measure them out on the floor webbing, and then bring out our lazer level to match up both sides. This also gives us a line to mark across the deck of where the edge of the bulkheads will sit. The next day Matt goes through those five areas, and cuts out pieces of foam core to fill in the gap of the seam between the bridge deck and the hulls. This is because we want to create a level ramp for when we lay down our unidirectional fiberglass. Q& A Questions: Why do you unroll your 1208 fiberglass underhand? Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.
