In this video, there is a short update on the progress of my osmosis treatment. I get started on removing the old bronze thru hulls. Last but not least I put up a makeshift boom tent. This video didn't turn out the way I had planned. I had to scrap a lot of the footage due to wind noise even though I have a good quality "dead cat" (windsock) on my Røde VideoMic Go. There were very high gusts of wind today! Fear not I've already remedied the situation. In this weeks episode we go through a VERY wide range of emotions! We flip flop between extreme frustration and extreme cheer and relief. Well at least Khiara was relieved... In a nutshell, we have put days and days of blood sweat and tears into getting the drive train perfect and in our first decent test run having just perfected the alignment and installed the Bruntons Sigma Drive we hear an odd knocking noise... We quickly dive on the propeller to discover that all of a sudden the Cutless bearing has developed some movement, seemingly overnight. Adams initial reaction is to fix the problem and hence we booked a haul-out... though after working over the problems and running it over and over with a few of the neighbors he was convinced that it is not a problem worthy of the $500 USD haul out fee and that further investigation (read Sailing) is required. Much to Khiaras delight the haul-out is postponed and we agreed to see if we can carry a less than perfect Cutless bearing through to our next scheduled haulout. Oh and the new anchorage was pretty great too! A week of adventure! We conclude last week's sailing passage from Provincetown, Cape Cod, Massachusetts to Gloucester, Massachusetts, arriving on a mooring at the end of the day. From there, Robin found a sweet intracoastal passage on the Annisquam River, which connects Gloucester Harbor to Ipswich Bay. This makes a lot of firsts, including calling for bridge openings. Two hours later, Arabella arrived in the Merrimack River, which is a tricky place for any boat to navigate because of rocks, intense currents, and at this time, perigean spring tides. Staying two nights at the circa 1922 Magnolia Hotel gave us enough time to visit our old dancing clubs, AT&T’s Discovery District and play with the steers at Pioneer Plaza. Rugged. Remote. Exotic. The Marquesas are a wild place. So wild that Fatu Hiva is only accessible by boat. Only after hiking across the island we understand why. Mountains rage up into the clouds. Jungle covers the valley floor. Only a couple of villages dot the landscape with a handful of inhabitants. Here the waterfalls are just as impressive as the torrential rain. After a week of exploring and feasting tuna with locals we make our way to the other side of the Marquesas, Nuka Hiva. Our first taste of civilization. An island with a supermarket, diesel and french baguettes! Vegetables are a rather rare commodity here. At 0430 the farmers market starts. By 0500 everything is sold out. One of the songs that we used in this video has been blocked worldwide and we had to delete it to make the video available again. They also deleted the voice overs and our talking so sorry for no sound in the first few minutes (00:00-03:16). We prepare RAN for the 490 Nm sail to the Madeira archipelago and get family visits from Sweden. We explore the fantastic Lisbon and walk up and down on the seven hills of the city. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. The Seawind 1260 is essentially the bigger sister to the 1160, and you know we already love the 1160. Whether you feel that the 1260 or the 1160 is the right boat for you comes down to personal preference. They're both very similar but here is a list of some key differences of the 1260 when compared to the 1160. Length: The 1260 is 3 feet longer. Beam: The 1260 is about a foot wider. Draft: The draft of the 1260 is seven inches deeper. Displacement: The 1260 3700 lbs heavier. Air Draft: The 1260 is about three feet taller. Engines: On the 1260 diesels are standard, but are optional on the 1160. The 1260 is slightly faster. The 1260 has more sail area. The 1260 has a nav station in the saloon. The spritsail is a four-sided sail that is supported at its highest points by the mast and a diagonally running spar known as the sprit. Follow along as Bob shows how to design, and sew the sail.
