This is the boat you need to beat if you want to win the America's Cup. It's hard to over emphasise the importance of Emirates Team New Zealand's AC75. This is the one boat that is guaranteed to be at the America's Cup Match in October this year. This is the target for all five of the Challengers. And this is a boat that doesn't push at the extremes, at least not when it comes to her appearance on the outside. Emirates Team New Zealand's decision to wheel their new AC75 out of the shed at their home base in Auckland caught even the locals off guard. Following just days after Alinghi Red Bull Racing wheeled their new machine out into the open, the Kiwis went one better and went sailing shortly afterwards. They might have been second to open their doors but they were first on the water and while they might not say it publicly, it's highly likely that this meant a lot to a team that tries hard to think of themselves as Challengers. Matt Sheahan takes a look at the Kiwi launch and considers how it might fit into the new fleet of AC75s. We have limited sailing experience but believe you can accomplish anything if you are passionate and dedicated to the cause. In this episode, we set sail across the Whitsunday passage to Hook island to check out some inlets. We hide away from some bad weather in a beautiful little anchorage called Nara inlet. We take the tender out to explore the inlet a little deeper and seek out a waterfall. The weather passes and we set sail out to the Great Barrier Reef. We had some terrible weather followed by some beautiful sunny skys, making for some interesting and boring times on board! So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). The last season has been a dream coming true… we are exploring the Brazilian coast with OUR BOAT that we called Odd.. But wait? What happened to the house? We are Ben and MP! Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the work needed was much more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way. Report about Hallberg-Rassy in IBI magazine, International Boating Industry
Guernsey is one of the Channel Islands and is situated 43 Nm from Cherbourg, France. We leave Cherbourg after 24 hours and arrive in St. Peter Port on Guernsey in the afternoon. The first marina is too shallow and RAN is standing aground every six hours. After three days we move to another marina and can relax. During our stay we get some bad weather, get invited to the yacht club and take a tour around the island. We take a look at RAN on the outside and give you a quick tour. The crossing of the Bay of Biscay is getting closer and that will be the longest passage so far and the first time on deep ocean. We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved in to our sailboat RAN, a one-off aluminium built Beason 40, and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started sailing south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds takes us. Jamie takes us on a tour of design features of Jupiter² both inside and out. Design is a Cyber 48 (Mumby 48) performance cruising catamaran and is constructed in Aluminum. This is our first ever attempt at a video.... people say the music is annoying! I think we got better at it, since then! Find out about Jupiter², the design and why Jamie loves his boat. And this great design can be picked up second hand UNDER $500kUSD. Don’t miss the bloopers at the end.🤣 SUPPORT US HERE 👇: Join our "Prime" crew on Patreon for early video releases, weekly video updates, private facebook group, video calls and even come sailing with us! During his time away from work, Jamie lived on board and cruised South East Asia. But his life dream is to sail around the world. His plans came together at the end of 2018 when he met a Filipina lounge singer in China, where they were both working. Princess was yearning for a vacation since she had been working many years to support her family. Finally, her siblings got their own jobs and she decided to join Jamie on Jupiter² and go sailing. It was a wild decision for her because she had never sailed before. For the first time, they sail for two weeks around Phuket, Thailand. She began to see what Jamie loved about the sea. They both resigned from their jobs in early 2019 and began cruising full time. When locked down in Cape Town South Africa we had the spare time to start putting together some videos that we wanted to share with our family and friends. Cruising the world and life onboard, is pretty difficult to describe to people verbally. Making videos about this lifestyle help them understand why we love it. This was the beginning of our sailing channel. The early footage was never intended to entertain, or enlighten, so the early vids are a bit of a patchwork. From South Africa onwards, we actually started filming with intent. Although with only the bare equipment, namely an iPhone and a go pro. We would love to get some better gear to improve our production quality, but due to planet Earth still being in lockdown and our cruising in remote locations, we’ve been unable to even buy a tripod! Soon, we hope. Jamie has spent decades working towards this dream of cruising around the world on a sailboat. However, it was not his only dream. Whilst being raised by a single mum on a single parents pension he would dream of becoming an astronaut! After finishing high school, and realising there is very limited opportunities for space travel growing up in country Australia (whom have no space program!), he got his first job in a factory, and focused his energy on the next best thing….. Flying. After a chance joy flight with a friend, Jamie found a new passion and with his factory job, managed to pay for one flying lesson per week. After 6 years he had all the qualifications to fly professionally. However, finding that first job is the real challenge. That came in the outback Australian township of Mt Isa, starting out on a four seater, Cessna 172 flying teachers, doctors, politicians and local aboriginals to wherever they needed to go. His career now spans nearly 30 years and having flown and commanded both Boeing and Airbus heavy jets around the world he now had the chance to fulfil his sailing dreams. He found the right design vessel, had it built and saved up a kitty. He also found the right girl! Finally it was time. UNTIE THE LINES I hope that our videos inspire other dreamers to reach out, focus and obtain your dreams. Hopefully some inspiration to "Quit Job and Go Sailing". Life is not supposed to be about just getting by. I find it ridiculous to spend your life paying off a mortgage just so that at the end of if, you have somewhere to live. You’ve only got one shot at it, as far as I can tell…. so make it special. Dream big. Live in the “now”. Make every moment count…. towards your dreams We’d love it if you give us the thumbs and SUBSCRIBE. Watch part 1 of the CORONA CHRONICLES HERE! https://youtu.be/jf519zLD0QU As the days were passing, our chances to cross the Pacific were getting thinner. Lucky for us, the sailing community we found in the Las Perlas Islands of Panama was amazing. We took over a remote island called Espirito Santo, where we got together to celebrate life. This for many was the first occasion to do something different in quite a long while, as the lockdown in Panama was still fully enforced. You now should have a runny, not so pretty looking blob - cover it with some plastic wrap and let it rise overnight (8-12 hours) The next day, add to the mix the second half of your flour and the salt. Knead it well (a good 10 minutes) and then let it rise for another couple of hours (or until doubled in size). Now you can crank up the oven (the hotter the better), find a large full metal pot and lid and place it empty in the oven to have it steaming hot. When the dough is ready, carefully take the pot from the oven (it will be bloody hot so watch out!) and drop the dough in it, close it with the lid, and bake it for about 20-30 minutes. After that, remove the bread from the pot and let it cook 10-20 minutes longer. You'll love it!!
This week we sail from Bequia to our beloved Tobago Cays, where we reunite with our COVID family and meet some new friends along the way. Kieran thinks it's a good idea to test Isabelle's swimming abilities whilst sailing, maybe not the best captain's decision. Our hole convoy gets together to celebrate young Santi's eighth birthday, with song and BBQ. Plus we finally get our GoPro to work (yay). Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. Last week we hauled out our boat for what we were hoping to be a simple paint job and a dash of maintenance thrown in. Saoirse is a 1971 pearson 35 with a drop centerboard, and one of the things we had on the list to fix was the leak coming from our centerboard pin. While working on that we discovered we had water in our keel and one thing led to another and now what we have is a bunch of holes in our boat. But the good news is we think we found the problem. After several processes of elimination we have come to a conclusion, so now we can focus on getting this problem fixed. big love, Beau + Brandy #beauandbrandy #sailing #haulout --------------------------------------------------------------------------- -HELP SUPPORT THE PRODUCTION- Join our Patreon: http://bit.ly/BB-Patreon One time Donation via Paypal: http://bit.ly/one-time-donation-bb Be sure you are Subscribed: https://www.youtube.com/c/sailingsaoirse Amazon Wishlist: https://bit.ly/beauandbrandywishlist -SWAG- https://sailingsaoirse.com/shop/ -MUSIC- Epidemic Sound is where we find all of our music. 30 day free trial: https://www.epidemicsound.com/referral/mxtzxe/ -LETS BE SOCIAL- Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/beauandbrandy Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sailingsaoirse -OUR GEAR WE USE- main camera: https://amzn.to/2lm2bSY go pro camera: https://amzn.to/3hMxf5C backup camera: https://amzn.to/2l8e3ry Waterproof Dry Back Pak: https://amzn.to/2VICYkH electric setup*: controller: https://amzn.to/2lm7hP7 electric motor: https://amzn.to/2ZnLfvN motor controller: https://amzn.to/3getpSw ____________________________________ *This channel is a participant in the Amazon Affiliate Program. The usefulness of fiberglass, when applied in the right places, makes the proper application of it an important skill. This week, we tackle three projects, two of which call for fiberglass sheathing, and a third that is a layup set over a mold that will eventually be broken out. Steve, with some sound advice from Narwhal Labs, makes the pieces that will be brought offsite for completion. Knowing that fiberglass cloth doesn't like making 90-degree turns, he builds in a cove or radius at each internal or external corner. He also fairs each piece, and sands them, because epoxy adheres best to surfaces that are rough, but fiberglass wants surfaces that are flat or gently curved. Narwhal Labs is a makerspace in Bristol, Rhode Island that also serves as the R&D department for TotalBoat and Jamestown Distributors. We spent two days working there primarily with resident maker Andrew Nota, whose background is rooted in fine furniture making and a bit of surfboard building. We're thankful for his and everyone's help there at Jamestown Distributors, which has been akin to other warm and hearty offers of help, advice, service, and talent that the boating community has given in spades. Cheers to them, and cheers to you! We hope you enjoy the video this week. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. One of the best features of the boat is the 180-degree shatterproof quartz windows that give good visibility from down below and a wealth of interior lighting. She has been very well maintained by an experienced owner with constant upgrades during his 15-year ownership. These include a recent topnotch awl grip paint job on both the hull and the deck and cabin top. Dual watermaking systems, dual autopilots, total cockpit enclosure, air conditioning, dinghy, and outboard are also upgrades Ticket To is fully equipped and ready to go where ever your cruising dreams want to take you! We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. We started out with Somnium, an O'day 272, moved onto Freebie, an Endeavour 32, and now are focusing on sailboat tours and working full time as teachers while we save up for our next boat. After 4 years of NO water-maker, the time has come to install one on Nandji. The way the world is these days, we think it is needed! https://www.sailingnandji.com/ Rainman offer a variety of water maker options to suit your lifestyle and your boats specific needs. If you are interested in purchasing a Rainman product head here https://bit.ly/3kceRpj We installed the 12 volt Naked system which makes 35 litres per hour (not the quoted 70 litres in the video) This video was filmed in May/June as the global covid-19 pandemic had taken a hold of the world. Neighbouring countries had closed their borders and Malaysia was in strict lock down until the end of June. If you would like to contribute towards Nandj videos, please use this link. Thank you. http://paypal.me/SailingNandji If you are getting something out of our videos, please become a Patron to help support our production and adventures. Get Unseen footage, Exclusive vids and engage with us more personally! http://www.patreon.com/Nandji In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we. had been anchored away from everyone and everything for 2 months waiting for the world to get back to normal. We are unsure of what will happen next and what we will be required of us to do, potentially leave... As the world is changing so much we decide it is time that we need to be 100% self sufficient, which requires installing a water-maker. We had been getting very creative in our water collecting techniques recently, but with the potential that we could be asked to leave or just in case the zombies start roaming, we are ready to sail off into the distance to live out our days. After 4 years of bathing and washing in saltwater, it is time to shed the salty crust and have a fresh water shower! We install the Rainman naked 12V system, which can make up to 70 litres per hour and runs entirely from our Solar set up. Which means we make water from the SUN! Now that is self sufficient!! With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed and our home ended up on the reef. We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! Ready to sail across the Indian Ocean, we were only days away from leaving when the pandemic begun closing countries around us... We are stuck for now, but enjoying the slower pace! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World! Last week we started shaping the keel timber. This week, we start on the laminations for the bow and stern timbers. We didn't have any timber large enough for these so we had to glue some large pieces together in order to achieve the desired dimensions. See how we made the patterns and then how to glue one of these up. El video doblado en español. We're SAILING AGAIN! Wow, it's been way too long. So long in fact that Nick gets terribly seasick on hull #1's maiden voyage. That's partly because he doesn't have his sea legs and partly because they're sailing upwind into 30kts of wind and choppy seas. Hope you enjoy this one! Thanks for watching! Amazon wish list: https://amzn.to/3MExcJ1 When you think of seamanship, you might think of a salty bearded sailor holding onto a giant wooden wheel navigating a boat through a treacherous storm, but another way to think of seamanship is the art of uneventful passage making. A lot of the work that goes into making a passage safe and uneventful happens weeks or months before the passage. We’ve got 3 weeks until we cast the lines and set sail across the Atlantic, and at this point our to-do list has dwindled down to a bunch of meticulous and small projects, but they’re just as important.
