A major 2010 refit breathed new life into ILLUSION and added five meters to her stern. This addition was done by Pendennis in conjunction with De Voogt. Motor yacht ILLUSION has a steel hull and aluminum superstructure and beautiful teak laid decks. She is able to cruise at 13 knots and reaches a top speed of 15 knots. ILLUSION can carry a captain and up to 13 crewmembers. She offers a beam of 28 feet (8.8m) and a draft of 10 and a half feet (3.2m). ILLUSION offers a comfortable family atmosphere on board. She can accommodate up to 12 guests in six beautiful staterooms, including a full-beam owner's stateroom with a marble bathroom that features his-and-hers sinks, a Jacuzzi, a spacious office area, walk-in wardrobes and a dressing area. ILLUSION’s layout also offers a full-width VIP double cabin with marble bathroom, located aft, and four additional staterooms. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. We risked everything to get back to our beloved Pickle! We travelled 1000's of kms and scorching temperatures in a old banged out Spainish car, but it was so worth it, and it feels amazing to finally be back! Its the height of Summer and it takes a few days to adapt to the heat, so we mix work with pleasure splitting boat jobs with days out and cooling swims in the beautiful ocean! We start the dreaded windows job, but that is going to take weeks. We get on top of the initial rust and corroded engine and wiring and oh of course the kids find fun in all situations and create themselves melon heads with our well found fish food, stay tuned to the end to see their craziness! In this episode we show how we upgraded our SD50 sail drives on our Lagoon 450 to alleviate the problem of the slipping cone clutch, which is an extremely common issue with these saildrives. Also, on our way into Rio Dulce, Guatemala, the sail drive developed a loud, disconcerting ticking noise, which I had no idea where it was coming from after dismantling the unit. However, as a huge coincidence, while upgrading this unit, the ticking noise disappeared. Since this episode was filmed we have sailed over 2000 miles, using the engines on regular occasions, and the sail drives have not skipped a beat. We planned to complete TWO big projects while in Mobile, AL: 1) upgrading our battery bank & 2) fabricating a solar arch with dinghy davits. After much deliberation, we decided to DIY the batteries and hire out the arch fabrication. The battery bank and electrical system upgrade was nothing to sneeze at. But Kirk took it on with his characteristic analytical approach, meticulously planning out the new wiring in a digital diagram first before making any cuts to our costly large-gauge battery cables. Unfortunately, the fabrication of our arch doesn’t go as smoothly. The metal fabricator told us he needed only a couple of weeks to complete the project and assured us of his prior experience building arches just like ours. As the days go by, we become less and less sure of either of his claims. Decisions about our electrical project and solar panels rest on the completion of the arch, and as each promised date of completion slides by on the calendar, our faith in the project dries up. It seems like we start something, get it to a point, then move on to the next thing... and that's completely on purpose. We'll be able to know where we want our electronics and systems aboard the boat, and still be able to run the wiring and hoses for them. The furniture's dimensions and "footprints" in the boat are the most important things to nail down. The navigation table, also called a chart table, is a spot on the boat that will be a hub, of sorts. We'll likely have some phone charging ports there, perhaps a seat where someone can work comfortably, and communication devices such as SSB and VHF, if we go with both, will be located here most likely. Nearly everything in this wooden boat is anchored to deck beams or the bilge stringers, rather than to a ceiling and to frames, so that Steve can easily perform belowdecks repairs or rearranging later. This is the third year the 7 Marine motors have been in Miami; the first year was a prototype, and last year they had a running motor on the water that we took a little spin in. This year they've got full production engines. In fact, just two weeks ago, 7 Marine got their full on EPA certificate, and they're ready to go into full production at their facility in Germantown, Wisconsin. Now what's cool about these motors: of course they're very powerful, 557 hp. It's a Cadillac-based, 6.2L supercharged V8 engine under here. All digital shifting. And you might also notice this paint job. One of the things they can do with such a low-volume production is paint it any color you want. This is their mahi-mahi paint job. So it's pretty cool, and when we get done here we're going to go take it for a ride on this 38 Fountain.
