The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). Our sailboat refit begins at the IGY Rodney Bay Marina in Rodney Bay, St Lucia, Caribbean... We are constantly checking, re-checking and re-inforcing our boat. Fact is this boat was built for the charter market. That means trade wind sailing conditions. Not extended gale or storm force conditions. But we Love Lagoon catamarans. Their price point was within our range when we were purchasing a boat. They have fantastic layouts. You are also at anchor 80% of the time but safety and integrity of the boat must come first when you are offshore with your family for weeks on end. To finance our dream of sailing around the world on a budget aboard our small sailboat, Atticus, we have been working in Key West, Florida, on charter catamarans as a Captain-Mate duo. The money is good enough for us to both finance Atticus’ refit as well as to save up for cruising the Caribbean, but the work is exhausting. Luckily the chance to take several of our friends out on short shake down cruises to Jewfish Basin is a great way to blow off some steam. We also get to experience the craziness of Fantasy Fest. For our favorite event, the Zombie Bike Ride, we both dress up as Boatyard Zombies, and Desiree dances for 5 hours straight!
