After 10 days in Bermuda, the weather window appeared and s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54) departs on the sailing adventure to Antigua. During this sailing trip we completed 948 nm, and it took us 5 days 3 hours, averaging 7.7kts As weather went, we had the tail end of a big low pressure system on the first day, with strong but decreasing winds and big seas. On the second day we crossed the high-pressure transition zone to the trade winds, motoring for 16 hours. The wind came back in on our port quarter, gentle at first, but then increased and sprung east, ending up forward of the beam. And this is how we spent the last 3 days, on a port tack fetch (on apparent wind) and into the increasing easterly swell. We pushed Cloudy Bay fairly hard through the waves giving us a rather hard but thrilling ride. The sea calmed down in the lee of Barbuda at dawn on the last day, then arrived into the turquoise water of Jolly Harbour, Antigua at noon. #288 Do we have our baby in Antigua? The Bahamas? Do we try to get home to Australia and pay the crazy expenses of up to $18,000 with no guarantee of getting back to the boat? We don't tend to lock a lot of things into the calendar but going back to Australia once per year to surround ourselves with close friends and family has been a really important thing for us. Home sickness is definitely a thing - for us anyway. Having said all that, this is a global pandemic and it's effecting everyone in different ways. We're still very fortunate and can't complain. The seals in the Galapagos had quickly claimed La Vagabonde as their new home. Initially, they were ‘cute’, but after a few days they became stinky (they stunk to begin with, but everyone has their flaws) and very unwelcome onboard!! Apparently they go to the toilet where they sleep… We go and checkout some giant tortoises, which were just the most incredible creatures. We dive Kicker Rock, which was quite deep but well worth the effort. Unfortunately the vis was quite bad down there due to the currents so we couldn’t capture to much on camera. These require more careful patterning, but are extremely satisfying to hammer into place if they fit properly - but will they ?! Before we hang the very final plank (the Whisky Plank!) I trim the plank ends flush with the transom, which really visually transforms the boat. We are always sailing from spot to spot searching for that perfect anchorage with beautiful sandy beaches, and we finally found it right out side of La Paz, Mexico. We have been sailing in the Sea of Cortez for several months now and have seen some seriously incredible places, but this spot we find is the best of all of them! It has a huge perfect horseshoe shaped beach, crystal clear waters with plenty of fish and an epic hike to the ridge where you can see the whole anchorage with the sunset! A day before the start of the Rolex Fastnet Race and with a forecast for punchy conditions, crews had been putting on a brave face, yet underneath and with the prospect of 450 boats threading their way out of a narrow gap at the end of the Solent many were very apprehensive...and with good reason. The start of the world's biggest offshore race was as brutal as the weather forecast suggested...and there was more to come. Matt Sheahan reports on the first 24 hours of this legendary race. He starts from the centre of the action after the start to see the fleet exit the Solent through Hurst Narrows where conditions were wild as the fleet set out on the 689 mile course.
