From installation to docking, SMARTDOCK is proving just how simple remote vessel control can be. At the Perth Boat Show, PG caught up with Jed from One Brokerage, the first person in Perth to install the new SMARTDOCK remote control system, fitted to a Regulator 34. Despite opening the dash to what initially looked like a complicated installation, Jed found the system remarkably straightforward, with a plug-and-play connection that had SMARTDOCK integrated and ready to go with minimal fuss. The real test came on the water. In strong winds, Jed was able to manoeuvre and dock the boat directly from his phone, giving him the freedom to move around the vessel and position himself where he had the best visibility. And after bringing the Regulator into Elizabeth Quay earlier that day, his verdict was simple: “Super easy.” SMARTDOCK is designed to take some of the pressure out of close-quarters manoeuvring, giving you greater control, visibility and independence when docking. I have to say that while I did literally close to everything wrong, the @TotalBoat paint still performed amazingly. If it performs this well when you do everything wrong, it must be a legendary product when you actually follow the instructions! I also went ahead and opened up the boat to prep Desperado for more work. A few years and another country later, we're back at the Desperado project and committed to at least getting her in the water in 2027. Until now, we've been able to take our time, pausing to enjoy the islands, wildlife and most importantly, waiting for the best weather windows before moving on, but that luxury is running out. Our haul out date in Trinidad is approaching and with a damaged hull beneath us we can no longer afford to wait for perfect conditions. I’m recording this episode from the roof of my RV in the middle of Black Rock City at Burning Man 2026. Burning Man has grown from a small gathering on a San Francisco beach into a temporary city of more than 70,000 people in the Nevada desert. But after decades of explosive growth, something is changing. Tickets that once sold out almost instantly are now easier to get. The average Burner is getting older, fewer people in their 20s are attending, and the cost of participating continues to climb. At the same time, the nonprofit organization behind Burning Man reported a loss of more than $10 million in 2024. In this episode, I look at the history of Burning Man, how it became what it is today, and some of my own experiences attending the event. Then we dig into the numbers: attendance, ticket prices, demographics, rising production costs, and Burning Man Project's finances. So is Burning Man actually dying? Has it simply become too expensive for a younger generation? Or is this just the natural evolution of an event that's been around for 40 years?
