Can you do the Great Loop for $20,000? In this episode of Practical Sailor, we build a complete budget Great Loop boat plan and ask how cheaply you could buy a used boat, prepare it, equip it, and actually complete the roughly 6,000-mile Great Loop route. We look at the best boats for the Great Loop, how small a Great Loop boat can safely be, sailboats vs. powerboats, inboard diesel engines, shallow draft, bridge clearance, mast height, fuel range, locks, motoring speed, safety equipment, repairs, navigation and the real cost of getting an older boat ready for long-distance cruising. If you’re researching how much the Great Loop costs, the cheapest way to do the Great Loop, what size boat you need for the Great Loop, the best used boat for the Great Loop, Great Loop sailboats, Great Loop powerboats, Great Loop routes, Great Loop bridge and draft restrictions, or how to buy a boat for the Great Loop, this episode is for you. We’ll also explain why buying a freshwater boat around the Great Lakes may be one of the smartest ways to start, what to look for in a reliable marine diesel, and how we’d choose an affordable Catalina, Hunter, Pearson, O’Day, Cape Dory, Albin or similar cruising boat that could make the trip and still have resale value when the adventure is over. #greatloop #GreatLoopBoats #BoatBuying #UsedBoats #Sailboat #Boating #Liveaboard #Cruising #PracticalSailor Practical Sailor is your trusted resource for reviews of sailboats and sailing gear. https://www.practical-sailor.com Chat with us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/PracticalSailor/
After five days at sea, the fleet has been put through a serious test. For Malizia 4, there has been no time to rest. After the earlier issue with the port foil, the crew has faced further technical problems onboard, all while sailing through some seriously demanding conditions. Imagine your autopilot suddenly stops working in the middle of a squall, with gusts reaching 40 knots, while one crew member is steering through a rough sea, another is reefing the mainsail and the others are down below trying to get the system back up and running. That was the reality onboard Malizia 4. And Gauthier's footage from inside the action is SPECTACULAR. ⚡️ With almost 1,500 nautical miles covered, the fleet has been pushed hard by strong winds, big seas and constantly changing conditions. Now, a high-pressure bubble ahead could bring the boats back together and completely reshuffle the race. The fight across the North Atlantic is far from over. 🎥 Watch Day 5 onboard Malizia 4 and see what it really takes to keep racing when things get tough.

The Omikron OT-60 takes a very different approach to the traditional motor yacht, combining the space and convenience of a powerboat with the quiet, easygoing character of a sailboat. Designed around efficient long-range cruising, she offers generous living spaces, excellent visibility, and a hull designed to make extended journeys as comfortable as possible. This particular OT-60 is fitted with the optional twin 370hp Yanmar engines, giving her considerably more power than the standard engine options. We look at her ride quality, handling, comfort, stability, engine noise, and overall performance in the rough water before eventually opening the throttles to see what she can really do. Whether you're considering the OT-60 for long-range cruising, extended time aboard, or simply looking for a different approach to motor yacht design, this test gives you a chance to see how she performs when the sea is anything but calm. As always, the goal isn't to tell you whether this is the right boat for you, but to help you understand what the OT-60 was designed to do and whether it matches your own boating lifestyle.
The day started well enough, with the ebb tide carrying us downriver, but then the headwinds got up and opposed us before the tide also turned and progress became hard work. [48] After struggling upwind for most of the day, we made it to Velejo and nipped into the marina for GTI (Gas, Trash and Ice). The wind was blowing Jonah onto the fuel dock and getting off was made complicated, but we eventually exited without incident. [49] Feeling really quite tired after a long and active day, I was much relived to drop the hook, after motoring back out of the marina. [50] I was just getting settled for dinner when I glanced out of the companionway to see the Coast Guard heading my way with obvious intent. I half expected them to say that I couldn't anchor here, but it turns out they wanted to do an "inspection". [51] Well a bigger clown show rarely I have witnessed. A boatload of seeming halfwits, who proceeded to try to remember their lines as they demanded to see my fire extinguisher, air horn etc, but somehow forgot to ask for my flares. [52] They went on to state that I should be wearing a lifejacket when underway and insisted that I put it on right away. I pointed out to him that technically speaking I was anchored and clearly not "underway". [53] To which his colleague agreed with me, and then we all agreed that I did not have to wear my lifejacket. [54] Anyway, he goes on to lecture me about how I could be cited for not wearing a lifejacket and i could be in a lot of trouble if they saw me sailing without it. [55] I felt sure that this was incorrect but just went along with it. Later I checked and yes, there is a law, but it only applies to children less than 13 years old. Which was about the mental age of these fine representatives of the USCG! [56] Eventually, they shoved off and I went below for a double helping of "chef's privilege"! I inhaled some space food and fell into an uncontrolled heap until 4:30 the following morning. [57] Day 8 saw us getting underway before sunrise. [58] After having been so utterly wiped out the yesterday, I expected to take a short trip to Treasure Island and rest up for the majority of the day. [59] But the ebb tide was so strong that I arrived near Angel Island at only 9 AM, and feeling pretty good I decided to take a shot at laying The Gate and sailing down the coast all the way to HMB. [60] a not insubstantial objective for little Jonah and I.

LRC stands for Long Range Cruiser, and that tells you exactly what this yacht was designed to do. This isn't about getting somewhere as fast as possible. It's about comfortable cruising, range, practicality, storage, and spending some serious time aboard. And when you step inside a classic 65-foot Hatteras, you quickly realize just how much HOME you can fit into a yacht this size. 👀 We're going through the entire boat — exterior decks, entertaining spaces, salon, galley, accommodations, storage, helm, and all of those clever details we always look for on a true liveaboard. And yes… Rico is heading into the technical spaces and engine room because on a yacht designed for long-distance cruising, THAT is where things get really interesting. 🤓⚙️ She's from 1982, but does that actually make her old… or does it make her old-school cool? Would you take a classic Hatteras like this over a newer production yacht? Let us know in the comments! She is currently listed for sale for $749,000.
