Sailing vessel Tapatya. The inclement weather means I have to move inside the boat for a few jobs this week. I start to make mosquito nets for the hatches, finally get around to a few small paint jobs that I've been putting off for ages, and we have a sail to Cadiz to enjoy the carnival. This is the story of SV Tapatya, a self-built, Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat. The videos are a week-by-week record of our adventures as I live aboard, sail and strive to find out just what such a self-built, low-budget vessel is capable of. No ordinary fishing: Paul Winter, owner of the traditional Essex sailing smack MARIA (CK21), explains 'stowboating', a historical method of fishing in boats for 'sprats'. Sprattus sprattus, the Latin name for 'sprats', is a type of fish sometimes sold as whitebait and is part of the herring family (Clupeidae). In the Essex village of Brightlingsea, the 'spratting boom'–the heyday of fishing for sprats–in gaff-rigged, engineless smacks was from the early 1800s until the early part of the 19th Century. MARIA is an engineless Essex smack built in 1866 by Harris Brothers in Rowhedge (UK). She's seen in this video being 'pushed' along by her smack's boat (a tender) in a slightly hurried attempt to try and 'stowboat' – fish – on the last of the flood tide. Later in this trip, as an ESE wind filled in, they repositioned the smack to a better position to use the ebb tide, around Colne Point, at the entrance to the River Colne in the Blackwater Estuary. Maria's owner, Paul Winter, re-enacts this type of fishing to honour her original design and purpose. She's kept beautifully and sailed so well, she's probably in my top five boats of all time! One of our favorite features is the excellent ventilation since we mostly live as "hookers" (aka at anchor) where the boat automatically turns into the wind so we stay cool and we don't need to battle mold. We also have starlink for easy off-grid life. Our 2400 watt solar panel array also means we rarely need to run an engine to charge our batteries. ABOUT US: We saved for a our future boat, sold everything that we owned, and shipped the rest in a container to Cape Town, South Africa. We then flew there and explored South Africa by way of a safari and touring Cape Town before moving aboard our boat. We then sailed to Saint Helena, Ascension Island, Fernando de Naronha (Brazil), Martinique, Sint Maarten (Dutch and French side), the US Virgin Islands (Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas), the British Virgin Islands (Anegada, Norman Island, Jost van Dyke, and Anegada), The Bahamas (Inagua, Crooked Island, Long Island, George Town, Staniel Cay, the Exumas, and Eleuthera). We then sailed back to the United States, making landfall in Cape Canaveral, Florida. From there our destinations are endless! Both Dennis and Ann grew up military brats with Army fathers. Dennis (the Colonel) served 30 years in the US Army and his retirement pension helped us retire in our 50s. Ann (the ship's Captain) wrote Test Automation in Python and Java. Dennis and Ann met on Match.com where Ann had in her profile "Do you want to sail the world with me?" Ann easily brought Dennis into sailing, and he loved the GTFOplan of retiring early and sailing the world. After many years of saving, living on one income but earning two, and cutting back on everything possible, they saved enough to buy a Balance 482.
