One of the coolest and problematic areas on our boat is the windows. They are sleek and curved - aesthetically pleasing to the eye but a mission to repair or replace. Because of the geometry of the side windows, new pieces need to be moulded into shape before they can be fitted to Paikea. It is an expensive undertaking and one we just cannot afford at this point in time. However we need to do something. They leak and they squeak but fear not! Shayne has found the perfect glue to at least sort this part out once and for all. We may not be able to do anything about the crazing in the perspex window itself but we can at least glue them in properly. We packed up in Luperón and hit the road for the mountains of Jarabacoa— trading ocean breezes for cool air and jungle-covered peaks. After a scenic drive through the Dominican countryside, we rented a house in Las Guázaras, perfectly tucked into the hills. From there, the adventure really began. With our 2 and 3 year old in tow, we tackled the steep and strenuous hike up Montaña El Mogote. It wasn’t easy — sharp climbs, and lots of toddler encouragement — but the panoramic views made every step worth it. We cooled off at Balneario Salto El Baiguate, absolutely stunning. A powerful waterfall, fresh mountain water, and that feeling of having a place almost entirely to ourselves. We also explored the town of Jarabacoa, wandered through Parque La Confluencia, and crossed the suspended bridge over the mighty Río Yaque del Norte — the longest river in the Dominican Republic. Mountains, waterfalls, family adventures, and unforgettable views — this is why Jarabacoa is known as the adventure capital of the DR. Filmed August 2025. Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon. An EPIRB is a distress unit you activate when human life is in jeopardy. It transmits a specific 15-character ID (Hex ID) that cross-references a database, and with built-in GPS it sends your lat/long so rescuers know exactly where to look. EPIRBs can be sold with or without AIS transmission—and AIS is strongly recommended, because then not only rescue personnel know where you are, but boats in the vicinity can see your AIS signal on their display. We also cover how EPIRBs sit in brackets so they don’t accidentally activate, how they can be activated manually or by water activation, and the difference between Category 2 (manual deployment) and Category 1 (float-free) EPIRBs. Finally, we cover the lanyard: tie it to a life raft, ditch bag, or your wrist—but don’t tie it to the vessel, because if it’s underwater it won’t transmit.
