She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. This island is the most populated island of all of the Bahamas so of course we'll have to re-provision before heading off. We've heard about this fresh grocery store in Nassau and we have to visit. We meet a couple new friends, do some snorkeling and have an all around jam packed 3 days before a big blow comes to push us out of paradise...but I guess that's life on the water. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. Need to drill a big hole?... BORING! That's right, we are final to the point of boring out the stern post for our prop shaft. We were very much looking forward to this set up and seeing how this works. We put together a setup that included a long boring bar with multiple different cutter attachments we could switch in and out then mounted that bar through the drilled hole in the stern post, sandwiched between two bearings to guide it. Once that was set up we built a sled to carry the Hole Hawg drill we used to power the boring bar. The whole setup worked like a charm! With that done, we were able to get back to working on scarfing up the next plank as well as shaping the stern post to accept the cutless bearing housing. Istanbul, in modern day Turkey, has been an important city for thousands of years. As Rome declined, it upheld the torch of civilization while Europe descended into the dark ages and for centuries it was at the center of the Christian world. And yet it’s also been at the core of the Islamic world, when the Ottoman empire ruled over the majority of the Mediterranean. The city stands at the junction of two separate continents and at the epicenter of the clash between two very different worldviews. And it is in this city that the Hagia Sophia, once the most advanced man made structure on the planet, has been used to praise two different Gods over the millennia. All of it’s beauty, it’s complex history, and it’s symbolism for raw human achievement, are still evident on it’s 1500 year old walls. But today it is at the front lines of a new fight, the culture war between the secularism of the west and the religious conservatism of the middle east. Until now, family and friends have always sailed with us on our Tartan 37, but this time we sail her by ourselves, up to Milwaukee and back. Leaving the dock at our marina in Racine is tricky. The dock is on the Root River (which frequently floods and drains), and is situated only a couple hundred feet from a drawbridge, which is just before another drawbridge. Making sure to consider all the potential curve balls — a bridge not opening, the current and/or wind pushing the boat, other boats, kayakers — while maneuvering a 37-foot boat in a 60-foot wide river is rather nerve-wracking. Kirk, thankfully, has driven boats since he was twelve, and steers out of the river and into Lake Michigan without incident. In Milwaukee we meet up with our parents, check out the Third Ward, and spend an evening at Summerfest. The sail back to Racine is a roller coaster ride, as wind from the night before has whipped up the waves on Lake Michigan.
