In our other "how to spray gelcoat" video I really didn't focus a lot on the equipment or on the spraying process. I heard all of you! This video focuses ONLY on the spray gun, and the application of the gelcoat. I teach you what to look for when spraying, how to adjust the spray, and how to apply it to the surface you're coating. This spray gun was bought on amazon, and only cost me about 35$ (at the time). Ive been spraying gelcoat with this gun for about 2 years now. It hasn't failed me yet. If you'd like to see the other video it is in a playlist. The link for the spray gun is below if you'd like to try it. My #totalboat discount code is also at the end of this description. If you are thinking about spraying an entire boat with this spray gun be prepared for a LOT of sanding. I hate sanding boats. Gel coating a boat is HARD work. This gelcoat application method is the most cost effective for the DIY'er I highly recommend you use two coats of Gelcoat without wax and one final coat of the gel with wax. This will give you a good foundation for sanding. Which is a video I am prepping now. If you plan on doing a lot of projects I still recommend you buy the 300$ gelcoat specific spray gun. You MUST have all your ducks in a row, have your dump cup, acetone, and cleaning brushes ready. You only have about 6 minutes to spray all the Gel and get the cup gun cleaned before it starts to cure Trust me when I say the most frequently asked question I get is " How to gelcoat a boat" I think its worth mentioning how awesome (I think) the 80's vibe is in this video. +++ Very sad news:Magnus Reslow has died. Colombian coast guard found his boat shipwrecked and his body in the water. What exactly happened after he left Santa Marta on the 15th of February is still known. We are very sad about the tragic loss. Magnus was in a good mood when he left Santa Marta and so thankful for all the help he got. His plan was to sail to Panama and then continue to the Pacific. His biggest dream was to sail to French Polynesia. R.I.P. Magnus!" Magnus Reslow is a Swedish single handed sailor who was attacked by pirates at the Columbian coast. On 29th of December his boat was invaded three times by pirates, close to the city of Barranquilla. Reslow was beaten up several times and attacked by knife. The attackers stole nearly everything from his low budget boat. In this interview Reslow talks about the attack and how he could manage to escape after the pirates towed up his boat, trying to pull him to the coast. It was a bear-away at top pace, with mast bend evident before the forestay went slack as the lower section in the bottom third of the mast gave way under pressure forward, causing the rig to collapse into the water to leeward. Welcome here :) We are grinding maniacs in this episode. We grind gel coat, and then grind gel coat some more and in between we talk about how it's going grinding gel coat. And it is going well. We are making progress at a GREAT pace and are feeling excited to be uncovering a better concept map for the repairs ahead. The first two days of grinding we carefully took off most of our gear inside the boat so that we wouldn't track dust onto the cockpit. We wanted to keep that area clean because it's where the dogs were hanging out. It didn't work well enough for how overly protective we are so we ended up finding an awesome dog sitter and sent them to get all the love and cuddles in a non-fiberglass environment. We missed them, but it did make it easier to take cool down breaks and made it possible for us to vent our space a bit better. Plus, the dog sitter had kids and our dogs LOVE kids. Brett managed to find a full face respirator which was such a great find! Keep in mind this video was back in the days of complete PPE shortages. We were super excited for the full face set up. I figured out that wearing my n95 mask underneath my respirator added the extra layer of protection I needed to keep my lungs gel coat free. Go get your own here- https://bchrbox.co/EXPEDB4L Our Paddleboards! - https://amzn.to/3yBgwhj This week’s adventure included soaking up the heat while motoring from Nassau to the Exumas in the clear, glassy water, playing on the deserted Lobster Cay, seeing lots of adorable hermit crabs & thimble jellyfish, trying out our new paddle boards, and exploring Pablo Escobar’s sunken drug plane! First things first, we grabbed Jade’s mom from the airport in Nassau - this was her first time sailing with us and she picked it up like a champ! We planned to check out the Exuma Islands to give mom a full-on sailing experience, but with very little wind we ended up motoring a lot of the way there. We set anchor at Lobster Cay and inflated our new paddleboards from Isle Paddleboards for the first time. Inflating them was a bit more difficult and took longer than we anticipated, but once inflated they were super easy to navigate and so much fun! We plan on leaving them inflated on the rack on the boat. We paddled ¼ of a mile against the current to get to Lobster Cay. Dingo and Penny tagged along and kept switching places between the boards, knocking one of us off of them from time to time. Dingo especially loves paddleboarding. When we got to the beach we had the place to ourselves! There were loads of cute little hermit crabs, and no mosquitos - so lucky! After getting back to the boat, we had a quick salad for lunch and planned to motor out to a sunken plane at Norman’s Cay. While motoring, we ended up dipping out into the Atlantic side of the islands and had just enough wind for some light sailing - woo! It felt so good to finally sail after being in the breeze-less heat for so long. Mom took to sailing like a natural. After waiting for the crowd to die down, we set out to snorkel around the sunken drug plane. Jade scraped her butt on some coral, and Brett got caught in a cloud of jellyfish and got stung quite a bit - because what’s an adventure without a little mishap? To make things even more exciting, a storm started to roll in and lightning began hitting the water around us. What an adventure! This is (hopefully) our longest sail ever! 21 days without seing the shore and many nautical miles away from it. Distance covered: 3,520 Nautical Miles or 4,050 miles or 6,519 kilometers with some squalls and some wave height of 3+ meters… Sail changes countless times some not scary and some a bit frightening squalls with max wind strength of 36 knots or so. Only few boats encountered during all this time. We stacked a lot of food and shared what we provisioned but we also caught a Mahi Mahi, that was so good! Some a bit scary and lots of rewarding and pure magic like night shifts and the stars at night. It's incredible out here without any interference of other lights. We were lucky to capture some of it on video. What seemed so crazy and incredible in the beginning that last hour was indescribable joy and gratitude for this experience. Join us and Subscribe! As far as we know, we’re the last sailboat on the river. The only other watercraft are tows with barges, a couple motorboats being delivered for winter storage, and bunch of duck hunters. It’s a bit desolate, but beautiful. It feels like we have the river all to ourselves. At the city marina in Peoria, Illinois, the docks are completely empty. Shortly after we arrive, an employee walked to the farthest dock and hung a metal sign: MARINA CLOSED. We wondered if they might shut the power off on us, but thankfully it stayed on all night, and so did our electric heater. Because the temperatures regularly dipped to freezing, and we don’t have a way to heat our boat without shore power, we stayed at free docks and marinas every chance we could get. But, the southern half of the Illinois River is much less developed, and there’s no way around anchoring — unless you travel at night, which is risky business — and we were not about to do that. We ended up anchoring for a night at Big Blue Island. It took us three times to feel good about our bow and stern anchor setup, as it was our first time ever using two anchors, and our first time anchoring in a current. The night was periodically rolly due to barge traffic, but in the morning we woke to perfect calm water and lovely bird songs. The fall colors were really firing up.
