Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli were in full test mode on Monday with flight getting ever lower upwind as the sailors sought the end-plating effect that is on the lips of every design co-ordinator in the America’s Cup at the moment. With a wide cant on the foil arm and windward heel, the V’d hull of the Italian LEQ12 was wave skimming, keeping the power on but hunkering down low whilst through the tacks it was noticeable how bow-down they exit before pulling on the mainsail power and exiting the transition at pace. Techniques are being honed down in Cagliari and valuable data being sourced. After a decent session that lasted nearly four hours, the team called it a day as the afternoon Mistral filtered in bringing chop and 18 knot gusts, very much to the liking of Marco Gradoni who was rotated into the driving seat in the afternoon. Marco is one of the upcoming stars of the America’s Cup who Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli have been encouraging through the system, giving him plenty of time on the LEQ12 to learn from Spithill and Bruni. Alongside Ruggero Tita, the Italians have real strength in depth in the driving department. Section 41. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away. It's a raw, unedited view of the never before seen behind-the-scenes development of a team and their boat to win the oldest trophy in international sports. #AC37Recon #AmericasCup #Barcelona2024

After some absolutely thundering sessions in the AC40 all this week, on Friday it was the welcome return of BoatZero for Alinghi Red Bull Racing who brought back the much-modified AC75 after considerable time in the shed repairing the rudder tower structure that so dramatically failed back at the end of March. Speaking afterwards, Adolfo Carrau, Alinghi Red Bull Racing’s superb Design Co-Ordinator who spends a good deal of his time on the water assessing and reporting back to the design team summarised the day accurately, saying: “We managed to tick all the boxes after we damaged the rudder and a bit of the structure surrounding the rudder tower and so on. We had a lot of new gear too to commission and that took the first part of the day plus we took the opportunity to change some systems inside the boat as well so that was a big half of the day with just tuning systems and making sure they were up to the task in these conditions which today were a bit on the on the extreme side…and then just getting the guys back into AC75 rhythm which is quite different to the AC40 in terms of more people that need to be co-ordinated in the big swell, in straight lines and manoeuvres, so I think as the day progressed the guys got better at it and I think was a pretty successful day at the end.” Section 41. INEOS Britannia rounded out a four-day sailing week on Friday with a very, very interesting session in swell conditions remarkably similar to Barcelona this week and a breeze that topped out at 16 knots that perhaps will have the W-Foil champions within the design team raising a glass or two. With double Olympic Gold medallist Giles Scott steering on port tack in control of the immersed W-Foil, he barely missed a beat all day. Bear-aways were unbelievably flat, tacks were super-fast and in a straight-line with the boat end-plated low in the water there wasn’t a hint of the rapid drop off the foil that we’ve seen in all the recent sessions. ‘T6’ looked low and perfectly in control in conditions that would have certainly challenged an AC40 in one-design mode. Indeed, when T6 flipped on to starboard tack or gybe, the flat port foil seemed to be the one that caused more of a headache for the flight controllers with a slightly unsteadied flight profile and taking on far more air post-manoeuvre. Keen to find waveforms that in some way mimic the swell that NYYC American Magic are expecting in Barcelona, the team towed ‘America’ some five nautical miles offshore to put their new sculptured shiny chromium starboard foil to the test on Thursday. Michael Menninger who was onboard as one of the flight controllers gave a great analysis of the difference between the foils in interview afterwards saying: “It's more of a sea state thing really, I think in the foils you can feel a little bit of difference just in terms of performance and kind of a different mode that you might have to sail on them, but the sea state plays a really big factor just depending on the angle of the waves and on one tack with more of a side wave you get kind of bigger leeway spikes and so it is pretty different, pretty dynamic with the waves.” Section 41. Today, we'll look into the best superyacht tenders on the market. We'll look into the different types of tenders you can avail for all your sailing needs, including their performance, design, and pricing. We have a unique and interesting lineup today, so stick around to learn more about our top picks!  Dubbed "ship's boats", tenders are the accompanying vessels that support large ships in their cruise, usually stowed on deck or towed astern. Where ships allow for heavy-duty mass transport, tenders are what we rely on when it comes to guest transfers, rescue missions, mobile explorations, scuba-diving and even fishing - allowing guests more freedom and convenience when it comes to maximising their time at sea. Tenders are usually categorised by their hull type and purpose, and we’ll use these together with their current prices to rank some of our best picks in this video. ⛵️ Leave a LIKE, write a COMMENT, and SHARE this video if you enjoyed it! ⛵️ SUBSCRIBE and click the notification BELL to be updated with new episodes! What a day, what a week, for Alinghi Red Bull Racing who have been like a charging bull out in front of the early Spring sunbathers on the Barcelonetta beachfront and today, Thursday, they put on another masterclass of up-range sailing in the team’s AC40. A crew rotation saw Maxime Bachelin and Nicolas Charbonnier take the helm supported by Yves Detrey and Nicolas Rolaz on trim and it was a blistering session conducted at rapid pace with the breeze filling in through midday and delivering a 15-18 knot ‘Garbi’ thermal and some aggressive chop to push the sailors to the max. The confidence that the team have built in recent sessions is unquestioned and the sailors are happy to push into uncomfortable scenarios more and more with plenty of practice today on the fast, single-board head-ups that more than focus attention. A terrific session on balance that proved the strength in depth that Alinghi Red Bull Racing have at their disposal and the technical foiling excellence that they are building through relentless hours on the water in Barcelona. The hugely experienced Yves Detrey speaking afterwards walked through the day saying: “Yeah pretty good day, we quickly changed to the J3 because the wind was increasing, and I think we had more than 18 knots wind speed and the sea-state was getting higher and higher but yeah pretty good day I think we reached about 40 (knots) for a while…happy with that.” Section 41. It was close to the limit today in Cagliari for the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli LEQ12 with relentless sea-breeze bringing in 18 knots true by the end of the session and a vicious offset chop that made it even harder for all the Chase Boats trying to keep up. Gilberto Nobili, the Operations Manager for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli and a double winner of the America’s Cup in past editions with different teams, gives the inside scoop on the testing regime for the Italians with one eye firmly on Barcelona. Gilberto also gives an insight into the strategic thinking the team have around the AC40 and hints that their boat will likely stay in one-design format as foil and sail development is being done on the LEQ12. He leaves us in no doubt that the priority is the LEQ12 and the intense programme of data collection that the Italian team proceeded with on this, their fourth day of training this week. Recon Diaries: HIGHER & FASTER IN PALMA Supercoach Rob Wilson gives the low-down on another brilliant session out in the Bay of Palma for INEOS Britannia on Thursday and explains the high-mode that the Giles Scott and Dylan Fletcher-Scott were playing with all day. Rob confirms that much focus remains on the W-Foil that he describes as “an interesting foil” and also explains what the red markers are for on the bow of ‘T6’ the team’s LEQ12 test platform. Later in the day, Rob laid out a course for the sailors to throw T6 around and “remember what it’s all about” whilst still gathering the never-ending stream of data. In training for the last America’s Cup in Auckland in 2021, the teams actively sought out flat-water around the various inlets and bays of the Hauraki Gulf and depending on the wind direction could pretty much find what they sought on a daily basis. Now with the 37th America’s Cup in Barcelona and the expected October swells, it’s a very different story, especially for Emirates Team New Zealand who by dint of being the Defenders of the Cup have a pass directly through to the Match. The travails of yesterday with the blown tack that caused the jib to rip from the forestay and hurtle back down the port side just as Josh Junior was adjusting the leech line (poor chap) was yesterday’s news. The Kiwi shore team were in on it quickly overnight and as Ray Davies said: “Yeah remarkably little damage, we weren’t 100% sure if we were going to be able to go sailing today until we did all our checks - not many battens left in that jib - and I’m sure everyone has seen that the footage - that's what happens when there's like 55 knots of apparent wind. Even in super slow motion it peels back pretty quickly.” Section 41.

Francesco Bruni calls it “the best time to sail” and with 12 -15 knots of breeze and, at times, a lumpy seaway, the Golfo degli Angeli was at its very best on Wednesday for another awesome afternoon session for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli. It was another testing day in both senses of the word with the team’s LEQ12 at times requiring two leeward crewmembers to come to windward and hang off the shrouds to attain target speed pre-flight amidst plumes of spray barrelling down the deck – LEQ12’s by their very nature are not best suited to displacement sailing but once in flight, they are almost majestic riding above the wavetops. The Italians were after long runs today and an evaluation on fast manoeuvres and they put a huge amount of mileage on the clock with some 128 minutes of pure flying time. Section 41. Another outstanding day of testing for the British out in the Bay of Palma, frustratingly cut short by just a couple of hours due to a technical issue with the data gathering chase boat. Bleddyn Mon, the vital link between the sailors and engineers within INEOS Britannia gave a superb interview after sailing today talking through the importance of the bustle and the end-plating effect that the team are trying to induce. Bleddyn also covers the effects of leeway and how the team induce the now-commonplace windward heel and why they do it. A must watch for those interested in the technical aspects of the America’s Cup and the sailing styles, modes, trims and cants that all the teams are playing with at the moment. Section 41. Sailing on starboard tack in what seemed a relatively benign wind and sea state for the day, the tack of the J2 jib let go and the sail rapidly peeled off the forestay and swung back towards the port pods. Luckily no-one was hurt in the incident and the sailors backed the boat off and the Chase Team were in quickly with Ray Davies immediately on the bow inspecting the tack damage and reporting back. Pete Burling broke the incident down saying: “We’re not quite sure why it let go but yeah for us it's all a part of learning. We’re wanting to push the gear, push things hard and it's obviously unfortunate that it broke but we were probably lucky that it didn't hit anyone on the way back. Pretty happy that we could get it down, get everything else down, and get the boat back in one piece. Pretty nasty for it to be that big but yeah obviously happy to do it early on in the campaign…it blew back pretty quick and then it didn’t really light up the main too much at all, the hull just touches in and we put the boards down and started just kind of going backwards trying to get the apparent wind off it so we could save it from flapping and destroying too much stuff in the rig. It looks like the damage we’ve been pretty lucky with…I think we're in pretty good shape we’ll obviously have a good look at it tonight, obviously the jib’s not in the best shape but everything else seems to be alright.” Section 41. Paul Goodison runs through a light airs testing day out in Pensacola, enthused to get a session where they could run through a whole heap of tests, modes, pitch and cant angles. Speaking to the recon team he reveals that the hull design is almost completed for the NYYC American Magic AC75 that will go into build shortly and also offers a fascinating insight into work that the team have completed, and continue to work through, on the simulator. As one of the top foiling sailors in the world, a three-time International Moth World Champion and Gold Medallist in the Laser Class at the 2008 Olympic Games, Paul talks through pre-start moves and the double-board slowing technique. ‘America’ was pushed hard all day with some 67 manoeuvres completed, 10 windward / leewards, and sailed approximately 55 nautical miles with a total flying time of 105 minutes. Top speeds were approximately 24k upwind and 30k downwind. Section 41. In this video we take the Nomad for the first ever sea trial and I was lucky enough be invited. We discovered the range at 9kts is more than double what we thought it was in the walkthrough and get some really great education from fellow Aussie Captain Patricia who is part of the team who oversee the building and testing of the Nomad Yachts in the UAE. We do not run her up to full noise yet as she was still in the early commissioning stages but we did manage to get a very good feel for the boat and what she will be capable of when she hits Aussie shores later this year. To put it bluntly, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli looked spectacular out on a very flat Gulf of Cagliari hosting two of the design team again onboard today to really dig into the sailor’s feel of what this scaled A/B foil testing is actually like on the water. It’s hugely valuable getting the people responsible for delivering what’s hoped to be the winning foils for the Italians at AC37 in Barcelona and it’s a mark of how far along in their programme they are and just how hard they are pushing in this final design stretch. After sailing, the recon team managed a wide-ranging interview with Andrea Vergombello and he began by summing the day saying: “It was a good day at the end because there was true wind speed from 8 to 15 knots maximum, so perfect conditions to test and we had two designers onboard to look especially at the foil. That is our focus, and was good to switch from one side to the other check the two foils, the new one, the old one and see the difference… I think being behind the computer basically it’s always difficult to understand all the dynamics that you can feel on the water so it's good to be there to feel the sensation…you can really feel all the motion and what's happening on the water and also on the foil.” Section 41. There’s an upbeat mood all around INEOS Britannia at the moment and a near five-hour testing session in pitch-perfect conditions out in Palma simply added more fuel to a fire that is burning brighter and brighter as the weeks go by. Flat water and 8-10 knots of breeze made for a day that would have the engineers back at Mission Control at Mercedes Applied Science in Brackley, jumping for joy. In interview, all the INEOS Britannia team are coy about the W-Foil with responses varying from “It’s certainly different” (Giles Scott) to “It’s obviously an interesting design” (Bleddyn Mon, to “It’s definitely an interesting concept” (Luke Parkinson). Today Will Bakewell put things into perspective when he said in interview afterwards with Justin Chisholm of the Recon Team: “It's obviously very different to what we've got on the other side, and I think that's a massive advantage and just being able to form those comparisons because we operate in very changeable conditions so trying to draw absolute comparisons on tiny changes is sometimes quite difficult so just having that comparison there is really useful. And it's different in so many regards as well that we can learn from it in all conditions and that's what we were trying to do today…it's not been a disappointment at all, actually it's gone very well, it's been reliable and interesting so I guess that's all that you can hope for.” Section 41. The value of light-airs training in the AC40 will perhaps only be realised at a later date and on a day where the NYYC American Magic designers would have been desperate for straight-line data, especially on the chromium-coloured starboard foil, it ended up being a day for the sailors to work through the transitions of displacement to flight and then working super-hard in maintaining that flight particularly post-manoeuvre. It was a touch and go kind of day but Sean Clarkson, the former New Zealand Olympian and five-time Cup veteran, gave a super interview afterwards and summed the day up pretty accurately saying: “It was a funny old day, puffy, gusty, shifty, lulls and so wasn't the most productive day we’ve had out there but it's still good to get out there and do some take-off stuff and put a few different things in but yeah it was not the ideal day for long straight testing that’s for sure but every day you sort of make the best of it we sort of pull together and make the best of it.” Section 41. The big, two metre seaway around Auckland that’s been in since the weekend set the nerves jangling at Emirates Team New Zealand as the America’s Cup defenders took to the water to challenge themselves aboard Te Rehutai, the team’s much modified AC75, and push her to the limit. The recon team struggled to keep up all day as the Kiwis blitzed out to the area they call the ‘Back Paddock’ situated between Auckland’s Waiheke Island and Howick Beachlands before heading further offshore to find even bigger waves. Described as being in a “ball of spray” by the recon team, the Kiwis pushed Te Rehutai to the absolute limit and Nathan Outteridge gave a superb summary of the day, talking after sailing and looking more than pleased with how the day unfolded, saying: “It's been quite a windy forecast for the week, so we really want to get out there in the waves and see how the big boat handles the seaway because last campaign pretty much everyone just ran away from waves at all times so you know we took it a little bit slowly today went to the Back Paddock checked the new sail, the J5, and it was 18 to 20 knots there and after a few laps we thought alright we’ve got to get out in the waves and see how we go…we then stopped and went out and it was a bit lighter for sure, like down around 15 knots which was probably quite nice, quite entertaining in the puffs, but we got out there and did a few laps in the seaway and yeah very different boat when you're in waves for sure.” Section 41.

When the easterly swell comes in along the Barcelona waterfront, it presents the America’s Cup sailors with perhaps the most challenging conditions of all. The swell gets confused on the multiple submerged man-made reefs that dot all along the coast and for a foiling boat, it suddenly becomes a tough say in the office for both the helms and flight controllers. Speaking afterwards, Rodney Ardern, a veteran America’s Cup campaigner and two-time winner with the Swiss in 2003 and 2007 was pleased with what was a tricky day out on the water, saying: “I think it went pretty well. I mean it was definitely difficult conditions, it would bounce around quite a lot in the chase boat. It was different from tack to tack upwind and downwind so yeah it was tough day, but I think we learned plenty.” Section 41. I recently met Huub from Huub's Vlog. It'd been a while since either of us had spoken to someone who lived such a similar lifestyle. With such similar problems and benefits to being a solo sailing man on YouTube. We immediately got to talking about all our lives with someone who could truly appreciate what we go through. This video is our honest conversation with many insights he and I have never shared anywhere else. Enjoy! *!*!*Big shout out and thanks to Huub for editing this whole video. He has a great channel that you should check out: https://m.youtube.com/@HuubVlogs But if you can, I'd really appreciate you to help support him through his Patreon page: https://www.patreon.com/huubvlogs . . . For Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli it was ‘one of those days’ out on a choppy Bay of Cagliari with technical issues curtailing the sailing day without a tack or a gybe thrown in anger. Almost immediately after exiting the harbour, an electronic issue was identified, and the technicians came aboard quickly to work below decks. Speaking afterwards Marco Donati, the electronics supremo within Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli saw positives in the day as he described the issues, saying: “The issue was a little thing, but it just takes time to fix it because there’s a lot of stuff that you have to remove to access to that…it was something that we couldn't sail without, so let's say it was not a major thing that will stop us sailing but, because we are not in a regatta, you want to have the data to analyse so sometimes it doesn't really make sense to go sailing without getting the data to analyse what you want to try. Otherwise, it's a waste of time. So, we knew that the breeze was getting up, but we wanted to try the exercise of fixing something outside (the harbour) and it's also something that we should train for, for when we arrive at a regatta and understand not sailing-wise but maintenance-wise what we can do outside (on the water). So, it has been, by the way, a good exercise and we learn from that too.” Section 41. There’s a very different air around NYYC American Magic at the moment. No longer are the sailors sailing in their comfort zone and merely blasting around on training exercises. That phase is over and new technology and a newly upgraded starboard wing are sharpening the minds with a focus on data, data, data. This is what Riley Gibbs described as the “pointy end of the campaign” and serious decisions are being taken shoreside with regards the design direction of the team’s one-build AC75. Riley Gibbs confirmed in interview afterwards that these are crucial days for the campaign saying: “You know a lot of our development in the AC40 kind of leads our design decisions in the AC75 and it's kind of coming down to the pointy end of the campaign as far as with the hull design and as far as we're concerned with the whole design. So, you know, we're trying to tick boxes off to kind of make pretty big decisions here coming up shortly so a lot of our sailing on the water from day-to-day stuff is ticking those boxes.” Section 41. Looking flat and fast, INEOS Britannia took full advantage of a solid breeze that peaked at 20 knots out on the Bay of Palma for a thoroughly entertaining training session to round off a productive week in fine style. Having recovered and fully de-briefed from their Wednesday sky-rocket, Ben Ainslie and Giles Scott put the learnings into practice, immediately performing fast turn-ups and dynamic bear-aways making the incident feel like a very distant memory. Speaking afterwards, Giles Scott always the blueprint for interviews gave a terrific insight firstly into the sky-rocket saying: “Yeah we lost control of the heel and the boat began to go up but you know it happens pretty quickly and the boats are, as we keep saying, they are on a knife edge and we like to live on that knife edge, so every now and then you get it wrong but the important thing is that we managed to learn from it and today looked a lot better I think.” Section 41.
