Monhegan Island & Harpswell - 9 miles of hiking trails, the highest ocean cliffs on the Maine coastline, a quaint village with shops, activities and lodging, seals, and a local lobster fleet. What more could you want on an isolated Maine island? Monhegan is a small, rocky island ten miles from the nearest mainland and scarcely a square mile in area. It is accessible only by boat and is primarily a walking island. The town is quaint with plenty of interesting local spots to visits and the hikes were exhilarating. Oh, and only 64 permanent residents. We anchored next to the 142ft. Quite larger than the shanty drop off spots that we have seen so far on this trip. This must be where all of the local drop off spots bring their lobsters for their final journey to your dining table. It’s a hard business to be in. Your day starts between 4-5 am, no matter the weather. And there are so many pressures on the lobstermen. Tourism is conflicting - competing for good workers and implementing sound ordinances not to wake the tourists so early with loud boats. But don’t the tourists want to see and eat the Maine lobsters? Additionally, the high cost of gear, affordable coastal housing availability, and competitive pressures from overseas fishing mean less lobstermen every year. The 47 yacht fleet split across five classes, has enjoyed some testing sailing conditions. The Rolex IMA Maxi 1 World Championship fleet, featuring the most powerful entrants, and the Rolex IMA Grand Prix World Championship fleet, featuring pure thoroughbred racers, have both contested one coastal course and two windward/leeward races so far. V, and Django 7X, lead respectively. The three remaining classes have completed two coastal courses apiece. There were light winds at the start this week in Genoa for the 7 IMOCAs in The Ocean Race Europe fleet who were looking for speed at the start of leg 5 in the Med as they headed for the finish in Boka Bay Montenegro. The Luna Rossa team has resumed its program at the Cagliari base in light of the new Protocol, published on August 12. The document regulating the 38th America’s Cup introduces several innovations that affect various areas of the campaign. The Luna Rossa team members explain the key points to better understand how the next edition of the world’s oldest sporting trophy will work. The Sydney 18 Footers are a high tech build. Bret Van Munster is the brains and the constructor behind their 21st century building. He builds these sailing wonders. The Clipper 2025-26 Race started from Gunwharf Quays Portsmouth, UK, marking the beginning of an epic 40,000 nautical mile circumnavigation. We barely made it off the dock! 😳 Just as we were about to leave, the engine wouldn’t start — air in the fuel line. After priming and fixing the issue, we finally got the motor running smoothly and set out up the Chesapeake Bay toward the C&D Canal. Along the way, Lauryn slipped into her bikini (wow!) and the day started looking a lot brighter… until a large motor yacht suddenly turned directly into us! I had to take quick evasive action to avoid a serious collision. From engine troubles to close calls on the water, it was a day full of drama, excitement, and some amazing Chesapeake scenery. The Royal Ocean Racing Club’s inaugural Cowes Offshore Racing Series has signed off in style after seven thrilling, hard-fought races, marking the start of a bold new chapter for Solent-based offshore competition. Created to bring fun, competitive and impeccably run offshore racing closer to home, the series delivered everything it promised — and more: tactical duels, testing overnight passages including a cocktail of short sprints and coastal classics, all with the RORC’s hallmark professionalism and the vibrant welcome of the RORC Cowes clubhouse. Launched in the Club’s Centenary year, the series gave over 500 sailors, both Corinthian and professionals, the chance to go bow-to-bow in a compact but demanding programme. With the best five races counting from seven, the fleet faced everything the Channel could throw at them — from glassy Solent drifters where inches mattered, to bruising legs around notorious headlands and into the open sea. Series Champions Crowned IRC Zero – Graeme Lewis’ CM60 Venomous emerged at the top of the big-boat fleet, outscoring the Admiral’s Cup youth team, Ker 46 ROST Van Uden skippered by Gerd-Jan Poortman. Ross Hobson’s Open 50 Pegasus was third. IRC One – Offshore legend Géry Trentesaux once again proved his class, steering Ker 43 Long Courrier to victory. Michael O’Donnell’s J/121 Darkwood took class victory in the final race to take second and Dawn Treader completed the series podium. IRC Two – Ross Applebey’s Oyster 48 Scarlet Oyster continued its remarkable winning pedigree, securing the series crown ahead of Robin Herbert’s J/133 Corazon.
