Hurricanes are an ever-present reality if you plan to sail offshore in the North Atlantic during the Summer and Fall seasons. In fact, hurricanes have occurred there every month of the year. Many hurricanes originate in the eastern Atlantic off the west coast of Africa and leave a historical record over a two week time frame to give advance warning of their character and the predictability of their probable track and intensity when they eventually reach near the US East Coast. But, many others originate in numerous other locations of the North Atlantic, Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, open ocean, and wherever, and these can spring up with little or no advance warning to the mariner who has committed to a particular ocean route. So it is necessary good seamanship for Atlantic Ocean sailors to understand the nature, characteristics and forecast data sources available to safely deal with these destructive weather phenomena. We are Easy Day Adventures, a family of four taking one adventure at a time. In this video series we are pointing North to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska to go swimming up in the Arctic Ocean. Why? Because its there. Plus, it will make a great adventure for our growing boys who are learning how to dream BIG. Why not come along for the ride? Sometimes we live on our sailboat, other time we explore Terra Firma with our OVRLND rig. Either way, its always an adventure! In this video we cross the border from British Columbia to Alaska. The scale of the mountains begins to grow and we take the opportunity to spend two days in Skagway, Alaska before taking the ferry to Juneau. In Skagway we explore the town, take care of errands, and visit the Dyea Flats. The flats were spectacular because it gave us an open view of the water and surrounding mountains. We only wish we had spent more time boondocking. Our ferry ride to Juneau held a bit of a surprise. About 2 hours into the voyage, we received notification of a huge earthquake near the Kamchatca peninsula in Russia. There was even a Tsunami watch issued for our area. With 5 hours left in our transit it did cause a bit of concern but shortly after the watch was lifted for our area. We arrived in Juneau around 10:30pm that evening. In Juneau we settled in at the Mendenhall Campground for five days. This was our basecamp to explore the Mendenhall Glacier, Nugget Falls, and Eagle Beach. We hope you enjoy.

In this episode of Sailing Sacred Seas, we wrap up our very first season in Europe with an unforgettable passage across the Mediterranean aboard our Lagoon 440 catamaran, Kaia. After two weeks of solo sailing along Sardinia’s rugged west coast, Sam reunites with Vika in Cagliari for a final taste of Italian life — from historic streets to rustic Sardinian cuisine. With Kaia checked out of the EU, we set off on our longest passage yet: a 40-hour, two-night sail across open water from Sardinia to Tunisia. The conditions are perfect, carrying us out of Europe and onto a new continent. From fiery sunsets to star-filled night skies, it’s a poetic farewell to our Mediterranean island-hopping season. But the crossing isn’t without challenges — denied anchorage by the Tunisian coastguard, we push through fatigue on our second night at sea before finally reaching Monastir Marina, Kaia’s new winter berth in Tunisia, where we’ll be living aboard with our three sailing dogs for the next seven months. This milestone marks the close of Season One, but it’s only the beginning of the adventure. In addition to a painter (bow dockline) a small anchor can be a wonderful versatile too to avoid damage from walls and barnacles.
