When the village where you are moored asks you to wear a sumo belt, you don’t say no! It`s Preparation day in Buren Village for the Respect for the Aged Festival. The sumo ring here is over 100 years old, and Kitamura-san, 80 years young, is still part of keeping the tradition alive. Tomorrow, I’ll join the men of the village in their parade, wearing the traditional sumo belt. It’s moments like this—where history, resilience, and community intersect—that remind me why I love exploring Japan’s hidden stories. I say with Four men for lunch. I am 70 and I was the youngest. the oldest is 85. All are living independent and active lives. #Longevity #Japan #nevertoolate

Hurricanes are an ever-present reality if you plan to sail offshore in the North Atlantic during the Summer and Fall seasons. In fact, hurricanes have occurred there every month of the year. Many hurricanes originate in the eastern Atlantic off the west coast of Africa and leave a historical record over a two week time frame to give advance warning of their character and the predictability of their probable track and intensity when they eventually reach near the US East Coast. But, many others originate in numerous other locations of the North Atlantic, Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, open ocean, and wherever, and these can spring up with little or no advance warning to the mariner who has committed to a particular ocean route. So it is necessary good seamanship for Atlantic Ocean sailors to understand the nature, characteristics and forecast data sources available to safely deal with these destructive weather phenomena. This video discusses our past experience with some of the storms we encountered at sea and lesson learned from those experiences.

This was a unique custom job of a classic 1977 Islander 32, a timeless cruising sailboat designed by renowned naval architect Robert Perry! This 32-foot sloop, built by Islander Yachts in Costa Mesa, California, is perfect for coastal cruising, weekend getaways, or even extended voyages. 📋 Specifications Year: 1977 Make/Model: Islander 32 Length Overall (LOA): 32 feet Beam: 11 feet Draft: 5.33 feet (standard fin keel) or 4 feet (shoal draft version) Hull Material: Solid fiberglass with plywood-cored deck Displacement: ~10,400 lbs Ballast: 4,100 lbs (lead) Engine: Various options from production run, including Volvo Penta 13 HP diesel, Westerbeke 25 HP diesel, or Universal Atomic 4 gas (30 HP). Some models, like one listed in Virginia, feature a 2004 Westerbeke 30B diesel. Fuel Capacity: ~25-30 gallons Water Capacity: ~40-50 gallons Sail Area: ~450-500 sq ft (standard rig); tall rig: I: 44.5', J: 13.75', P: 38.91', E: 11.2' Additional Features: This one was featured with a custom solar panel that would allow them to stay anchored and have power consistantly, new refrigeration (some models, e.g., 2016 upgrade), Monitor windvane self-steering, and Achilles 310 dinghy (in some listings). 🛋️ Spacious Layout The Islander 32 MK II offers a surprisingly roomy and practical interior for its size, ideal for couples or small families: Staterooms: Forward Cabin: V-berth sleeps two, with storage lockers and access to the head for privacy. Main Salon: Convertible settees around a central fold-down table, sleeping up to three additional guests. Features long portlights for natural light and teak cabinetry for a classic aesthetic. Galley: L-shaped with a 2-burner propane stove/oven, sink, and refrigeration (upgraded in some models). Ample counter space and storage for extended cruising. Head: Manual or electric head (e.g., new Wilcox Crittenden in some spares) with sink and storage, accessible from the forward cabin or salon. Navigation Station: Dedicated chart table with space for electronics, perfect for planning passages. Cockpit: Spacious and updated with pedestal steering, new cushions, and easy access to primaries, making it comfortable for sailing or socializing. 🌟 Benefits Proven Design: Robert Perry’s design offers a balanced blend of stability and performance, with a moderate displacement hull suitable for coastal cruising or offshore passages (one documented circumnavigation). Affordable Classic: Priced typically between $20,000 and $35,000 (based on listings, e.g., YachtWorld and SailboatListings), it’s a budget-friendly entry into cruising with strong resale value. Easy to Sail: With modern sail-handling gear and a sloop rig, it’s manageable for shorthanded crews or couples, enhanced by features like a Monitor windvane in some models. Spacious & Livable: Sleeps up to five comfortably, with thoughtful storage, ventilation, and a timeless teak interior that feels larger than its 32 feet. Durable Construction: Solid fiberglass hull and lead ballast ensure longevity, though check for past blister repairs or main bulkhead issues, common in some units. Upgraded Features: Many examples include recent upgrades like new standing rigging (e.g., replaced ~6 years ago in some listings), updated electronics, and fresh antifouling/barrier coats. Versatile Use: Perfect for bay sailing, trips to Catalina, or weekend liveaboard use, with a layout that supports both adventure and comfort. ⚠️ Maintenance Tips Blister Check: Inspect the hull for blistering, a known issue with some Islander 32s. Verify if a barrier coat was applied during past bottom jobs. Rigging & Mast: Check standing rigging (replace every 10-15 years) and inspect the mast step for corrosion, a common issue in 1970s Islanders. Engine Maintenance: Ensure regular servicing of the diesel engine (oil, filters, impeller) for reliability, especially for older Volvo or Westerbeke units. Bulkhead Inspection: Examine the main bulkhead below for water damage or delamination, as reported by some owners. Deck & Seams: Look for soft spots in the plywood-cored deck and reseal fittings to prevent leaks. 🚤 Why Choose the 1977 Islander 32 MK II? The 1977 Islander 32 MK II is a classic cruiser that delivers performance, comfort, and affordability in a compact package. Its robust construction, versatile sail plan, and spacious interior make it ideal for coastal adventures, weekend escapes, or even bluewater dreams. Priced between $20,000 and $35,000, it’s a fantastic value for sailors seeking a well-built, character-filled vessel with a proven track record. Whether you’re new to sailing or a seasoned mariner, this Islander is ready for your next journey!

We may have just found our DREAM BOAT… but there’s a BIG problem. We want to convert an ex-commercial Prawn Trawler into a Long Range Expedition Cruiser, but we have hit a roadblock with insurance. Come along as we explain what we are planning! On our road trip north from Perth back to Darwin we are touring boats - and we fell in love with some incredible trawlers coming out of a commercial fleet due to new fisheries laws. These steel-hulled vessels are 23 meters long and we absolutely fell in love with one in particular — MV Levellian. We can already see the vision: transforming her from a hard-working fishing vessel into a go-anywhere, expedition-ready liveaboard. But here’s the roadblock… INSURANCE. We’ve searched high and low, but no company seems willing to insure an ex-commercial vessel being refit into a private boat. This is where YOU come in. 🙏 If you’ve ever gone through this process, know of someone who has, or can recommend an insurance company willing to take on this kind of project, please drop a comment below! Your help could make this dream possible. We’re so excited about the potential of this boat, and we’d love to take you along for the ride as we search, dream, and maybe… take on our biggest project yet. In this episode of our liveaboard sailing around the world journey, we tackle an important piece of boat maintenance – marking 90 metres of anchor chain. Clear anchor chain markings are essential for safe and accurate anchoring, especially when cruising unfamiliar bays, reefs, and anchorages. Whether you’re a beginner sailor learning the ropes or a seasoned cruiser preparing for offshore passages, this is a job every sailboat owner should know how to do. Anchoring is one of the most important skills in the cruising lifestyle. Knowing exactly how much chain you’ve let out can mean the difference between a peaceful night and dragging into trouble. In this video, we walk you through how we measure and mark our entire 90m anchor chain to ensure we can drop the right scope in all conditions – from calm tropical bays to windy, exposed anchorages. But marking the chain is just one part of a busy day aboard. We also tick off a few other essential jobs to get our sailboat ready for upcoming adventures as we continue preparing for life travelling the world by sailboat. In this episode, you’ll see: - Step-by-step process for marking anchor chain - Tips on boat maintenance for safe cruising - How anchor scope works and why markings matter - Preparing for anchoring in different depths and conditions - Essential tasks we complete before long-term cruising We’re passionate about sharing practical sailing tips, real-life maintenance projects, and behind-the-scenes moments of our full-time sailing lifestyle. Every episode is about more than just sailing – it’s about the planning, preparation, and problem-solving that make long-term cruising possible. If you’ve ever dreamed of living aboard, exploring hidden anchorages, or simply want to improve your own anchoring technique, this is a must-watch. We hope our experience helps you feel more confident when it’s time to drop the hook on your own adventures. Subscribe to follow our liveaboard journey, get more sailing tutorials, and join us as we explore the world, one anchorage at a time. It's been a year and a half since our first sail in @SailingAstridTheWombat actually that means it's been a year and a half since our first sail ever. That's right a year ago we bought this Beneteau Oceanis 430 and pulled the sail up for the first time ever when we brought her home. A sail that stretched 700 nautical miles from Townsville in Far North Queensland Australia to Moreton Bay in Brisbane Queensland. We are now preparing to move onboard and to sail around the world. Join us to see the challenges as we continue to learn to sail, prepare our boat and make changes so our boat feels like a home. We are moving onboard in just a few weeks so our sailing dream is getting closer and closer. Each experience we have and each new sailing skill learnt just keeps bringing us closer to taking off to sail around the world in our Beneteau Oceanis 430 @SailingAstridTheWombat living our boat life dream. We have filmed our journey from looking for boats, buying the boat and downsizing our house so we can liveaboard and all the messy wonderful life stuff in between. Join us now as we start to get our boat prepared for liveaboard life. As new sailors we want to share all of our learnings and keep it real in our videos. We want to show step by step what it takes to choose a boat, buy the boat and learn how to sail. Our sailing learning curve is steep so come along with us as we learn and grow as liveaboard sailors. We are Easy Day Adventures, a family of four taking one adventure at a time. In this video series we are pointing North to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska to go swimming up in the Arctic Ocean. Why? Because its there. Plus, it will make a great adventure for our growing boys who are learning how to dream BIG. Why not come along for the ride? Sometimes we live on our sailboat, other time we explore Terra Firma with our OVRLND rig. Either way, its always an adventure! In this video we cross the border from British Columbia to Alaska. The scale of the mountains begins to grow and we take the opportunity to spend two days in Skagway, Alaska before taking the ferry to Juneau. In Skagway we explore the town, take care of errands, and visit the Dyea Flats. The flats were spectacular because it gave us an open view of the water and surrounding mountains. We only wish we had spent more time boondocking. Our ferry ride to Juneau held a bit of a surprise. About 2 hours into the voyage, we received notification of a huge earthquake near the Kamchatca peninsula in Russia. There was even a Tsunami watch issued for our area. With 5 hours left in our transit it did cause a bit of concern but shortly after the watch was lifted for our area. We arrived in Juneau around 10:30pm that evening. In Juneau we settled in at the Mendenhall Campground for five days. This was our basecamp to explore the Mendenhall Glacier, Nugget Falls, and Eagle Beach. We hope you enjoy.

In this episode of Sailing Sacred Seas, we wrap up our very first season in Europe with an unforgettable passage across the Mediterranean aboard our Lagoon 440 catamaran, Kaia. After two weeks of solo sailing along Sardinia’s rugged west coast, Sam reunites with Vika in Cagliari for a final taste of Italian life — from historic streets to rustic Sardinian cuisine. With Kaia checked out of the EU, we set off on our longest passage yet: a 40-hour, two-night sail across open water from Sardinia to Tunisia. The conditions are perfect, carrying us out of Europe and onto a new continent. From fiery sunsets to star-filled night skies, it’s a poetic farewell to our Mediterranean island-hopping season. But the crossing isn’t without challenges — denied anchorage by the Tunisian coastguard, we push through fatigue on our second night at sea before finally reaching Monastir Marina, Kaia’s new winter berth in Tunisia, where we’ll be living aboard with our three sailing dogs for the next seven months. This milestone marks the close of Season One, but it’s only the beginning of the adventure. Join us as we settle into life as liveaboards in North Africa, dive into boat projects, and prepare for the next chapter of our sailing journey.

This is just one example of the many different ways a dinghy/ tender can be tied up to a wall, or near a boat ramp without being in every boats way. Great for tying up a small boat in a tidal area. In addition to a painter (bow dockline) a small anchor can be a wonderful versatile too to avoid damage from walls and barnacles. Please note- don't use this over seagrass, or in the fairway where boats will motor. Use common sense and think about other water users.
