Our trip to the Bahamas has definitely not gone to plan. Boaters know that the plan often changes and sometimes gets completely thrown out the window. After personal attempts to repair the engine we decided we needed to return to our home dock to get some help. The trip from Venice to Longboat Key proved to be the bumpiest Stormy leg yet. With the engine running at ONLY half a knot and wind surges of 30 plus knot winds with sustained 29 knots, oh and add on top 5 foot seas in the bay! We had to throw an anchor and wait out the storm on the dock. A short but memorable trip on the ICW. This is The Boat Life. Nic Morganti and Melissa Auman are moving onto a sailboat. The plan was sell everything, buy a boat, live on a boat, and travel and explore the Caribbean and the world while living aboard! The uniform is boardshorts and bikinis. Simple plan, but lots to learn and do along the way. Join our adventure as we sail away on sv Dodi, our Island Packet IP27, live on a sailboat, and explore life aboard. in Part One of a two-part series, we experience two days of challenges on the water. Challenge #1 was how to get out of a slip which was ill-situated adjacent to very shallow water, and challenge #2 was dealing with thunderstorms on the water. Challenge #3 which is briefly introduced in this video, and more detailed in the next was facing a serious grounded in open water. The charts said 17 feet of water, the actual depth was 4 feet...the bottom came up so fast that the depth sounder alarm, set to go off at 7 feet, didn't even have a chance to trigger until it was too late...hard aground with waves hotting us on the beam... In this episode, we’ll hear from guest host Caroline Ballard from a fellow podcast called HumaNature, which tells stories where humans and our habitat meet. After passing Sable Island (a small island situated 190 nm southeast of Halifax, Nova Scotia) on their first Atlantic crossing, this is a short story of a family who traded life on land for a 25,000nm sea adventure. They share the tale of encountering strange noises in the middle of the night and how they were terrified at first, but eventually discovered the source, which turned into a unique, once-in-a-lifetime wildlife experience. 2019 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 410 Performance Sailing was never so enjoyable aboard a 41-foot sailboat. With her powerful hull, the Sun Odyssey 410 perfects the art of sailing and comfort on board. The model is particularly secure, featuring sidedecks without obstacles and comfortable coaming. All is as with her predecessors from the 8th generation, the Sun Odyssey 410 benefits from a lower boom, which facilitates access to the sail and increases the sail area. A calm weather window presented itself and we took full advantage! Six days anchored out on the Great Barrier Reef in the lagoon at Lady Musgrave Island, a tiny speck about 80km of the Australian coast. Glassey smooth and crystal clear water with abundant coral and sea-life, this little paradise was ours to enjoy. I’m scared of getting close to the big ships. Which is exactly what we are about to do many times over the course of one day, as we enter the Kiel canal. I was quite excited to take the Kiel canal on our sailboat, even if that meant a full day of motoring. The perspective of going into locks for the first time in the most trafficked man-made channel in the world felt appealing. When I started to realize that it probably meant we were going to get quite close to the big ships that scare me so much, the Kiel canal became a little more daunting of a place. Our first close encounter with a big ship occurred 5 minutes after our exit of the locks, as our neighbor passed us, forming a big wake that bounced us properly. Less than an hour later, an even bigger ship appeared in front of us, scaring the living h*** out of me. We cozied up with many big ships that day, and if exposure counts as therapy, the Kiel canal should have cured my fear of big ships permanently (the story shows that this isn’t true…) The constant proximity with other ship came to take a more awkward turn later that day, as we very slowly passed a bare-skinned sailor on his sailboat. Ryan told me the guy seemed to wear no shirt, and as I hand steered to passed him, I realized he wasn’t wearing pants either. I accelerated to make the awkward moment as fast as possible. While I was embarrassed by the situation, Ryan wondered about the clotheless sailor the entire day. The locks passage in Holtenau was way smoother, and for 5 minutes, I really appreciated entering the North Sea. 5 minutes later, I realized traffic, boats and proximity with big ships was actually way worse in the Elbe river than it was in the canal. After a couple of close calls near a big ships anchorage, we eventually enjoyed a nice sunset before arriving in Cuxhaven, after 14 hours of motoring. I can rarely film our arrival. Partly because we shorthand Polar Seal and I haven’t found a way to have the camera out, partly because I’m generally dead-tired when we arrive. That day, Ryan and I had a “docking argument”(they are classic), that we managed to eventually laugh about. We arrived in Cuxhaven safe, sound, and richer of experience. I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats. - Who is Champ? Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza. - What camera equipment do you use? I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights. - What are your vehicles? I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years. Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice. From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come! - How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos? To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/, https://www.campendium.com/, http://www.atlasobscura.com/, https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - How do you afford your lifestyle? I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.
A few notes: 1. Going down is just the opposite as going up. 2. Never bring an ascender to the very top of a rope, as it needs a a few inches of space above it to dis-engage from the rope and move downward again. (I learned this the hard way and was stuck at the top of my mast for half an hour) Here are the exact items I use: Ascenders: https://amzn.to/2J7uYRr Harness: https://amzn.to/2u9G9o1 Foot straps: https://amzn.to/2L2J2x7 Caribeners: https://amzn.to/2N51BkW But, you can also employ the following, which I did before I bought any of the gear above (it just makes it easier): Prusik knot: https://www.animatedknots.com/prusik/ Hasty harness: https://www.animatedknots.com/harness/index.php Proceeds from this video will go to the Coral Reef Alliance, but you can also support me directly (and specifically the production of these videos) by becoming a Patron: https://www.patreon.com/theadventuresoftarka I am sailing Tarka around the world to raise money and awareness for coral conservation by supporting the Coral Reef Alliance.
