I've got to get from Santa Cruz de La Palma to San Miguel de Tenerife and it's about a 100 nautical miles. I have a good weather forecast of 15kts coming from the north. As usual in the Canaries the real weather conditions are stronger. The wind and sea are punishing as there begins to be some damage to the boat. Our stop at Green Turtle Cay, where we were bombarded by the “Bucketlusters,” is one of our favorite stories to tell from our trip to the Bahamas. Green Turtle Cay was a quaint, picturesque resort … until 34 boats came to the marina, bringing 340 party people. We were bombarded by Bucketlust, and no amount of foul weather would stop their non-stop party. These people were WiLd, sporting different-themed costumes each day (think WWF Spandex, Unicorn tights, fuzzy vests, fanny packs, you name it) while drinking, dancing, and drinking some more from sun up until … well, sun up again during a wicked 3-day northern front. Bucketlust is a private boat charter/group vacation (primarily for the young wealthilites who have a smooth 10k to blow on a vacay), and boy were they entertaining. Tiring, filthy, and loud at times, but still entertaining. We also had a fantastic time feeding (and dodging) the rather aggressive Abacos swimming pigs at No Name Cay, celebrating Junkanoo with the locals at New Plymouth for New Years, even getting in on a little hand-stand throw-down at the Tipsy Turtle. When we woke up from a nap at anchorage, it was madness all around. As we headed down the river trying to escape it all, our anchor dropped off the deck right in the middle of the channel and we ripped a sail! Finally, we made it back offshore but only to run right into a squall and to top it all off, when we pulled off to escape the storm we accidentally went into the only inlet that didn't lead back to the ICW- so were stuck there for 2 days! After a great sailing season in the Caribbean, s/v Cloudy bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54) leaves Antigua and heads off to east coast USA, out of the hurricane zone. With the end of summer approaching and boat work dragging on it was time to get out of the bilges and go sail. Go sail the great Hauraki Gulf. We needed to get back to our usual shenanigans of hiking, fishing, diving, and getting a little crazy… We pointed our bow to some of the famous islands such as Great Barrier, Mercury islands, Coromandel peninsula, Rangitoto and Waiheke. Not to mention the big city of Auckland was luring us south. With parks galore and beautiful bays, the cruising in this area cant be beat. Oh and did I mention underwater? The sea is alive! We have never seen so many fish. It was intimidating to be in the thick of things down there. We walked in the lush forests of Great Barrier. Visited wineries on Waiheke. Got a taste of big city life in Auckland before getting away from all in the outer Mercury Islands. But alas, just as we'd settled into the cruising life, we were rudely interrupted when a massive storm rolled through reminding us that winter was on its way and really, it was time for us to go. Time to head north where the palm trees sway. So with the last few errands done we were anxiously waiting for the weather to make a beeline for Fiji. Blue Mountains, flew up to Brisbane to get up close and personal with some kangaroos and koalas, and finished the trip with a short sail up to Pittwater. But the highlight was definitely New Year's Eve. We anchored Starry Horizons in Farm Cove on the 30th, just a stones throw from the Opera House. The next day, chaos descended. It felt like every boat in Australia was trying to join us in the little cove. Boats were dragging anchor, running into each other and anchoring waaayyyy too close. Honestly, it was quite stressful. Finally! Although the deck is far from perfect, we're super proud of how it came out. The interlux brightside looks good, but the show stopper is the KiwiGrip. It was so easy to apply and it looks awesome, feels great, and seems like it'll grip bare feet or shoes extremely well. We can't wait to see how it holds up to the wear and tear or cruising life. A couple notes on the KiwiGrip: It did go on thick but it didn't cover as well as I'd hoped in a few areas so I think we'll do a second coat before we splash Freebie. Also, the white KiwiGrip looks good when clean but I can already tell it may be hard to keep it that way. We'll be swabbing the decks frequently! These two young Kiwi sailors have had a tough start to the season but are trying to get onto their game ahead of the 2018 Worlds. By pulling off a bullet to finish off qualification, they sit in 25th overall, and pending protest will stamp their ticket to gold fleet!

At the 2018 European Championship, Ganapathy and Varun make Indian Sailing history as the first ever team to make the gold fleet of a major championship.
