This week we prepared for Tropical Storm Gordon. Well, I say this week, but I should reference that it is "This week" as in this is the week the video is done editing, but the storm was the first of September. I discuss the challenges with side tie storm preparation as well as the risk of rising tides. You can also see how we settled for an alternative tie-up that improved our changes or lessening the damage. Additionally, we talk about some more work on the boat. A Gooseneck locking mechanism for the mizzenmast as well as starting to paint the bilge white. I remember stating I would never paint the bilge white because I didn't' own a showboat. Well the jokes on me, White is so much brighter and makes it so much easier to identify or see any drips or spills down there as well. Interested in visiting Sumbiling Eco Village in the Temburong district, we found out that there are 2 ways to get there: 1. get a taxi to Bandar ferry dock, then take a 45-min river ride by small ferry followed by a bus or taxi to the Eco-Village OR 2. drive the scenic route via Malaysia to get from the main part of Brunei to their isolated district of Temburong. This journey will involve 8 passages through border controls! Soon (in 2019?) the new super long bridge will offer a route that stays in Brunei the whole time with no passing borders anymore! Visit with us the Sumbiling Eco Village and gather local and wild foods to cook native dishes. Blow darts like hunters and dance like the Iban. A real cultural experience! Short on time, we did not stay overnight but drove our comfortable rental car back to Bandar and indulge in a nice Malay food buffet at the Tarindak D'Seni restaurant. I paint the seawater pump in the original Volvo color and also mount a new impeller and gaskets so it is ready to work for two more years. I use a zinc based primer under the Volvo Penta green so it will stick a bit better to the brass surface. After the pump installation is finish I testdrive the pump and check for water and oil leaks, everyting looks fine. Star of the day was unquestionably Ben Ainslie and his America’s Cup crew on board INEOS TEAM UK. The British team won three consecutive races of today’s five, coming second in the remaining two. This was despite being called over early in the first race – today’s only race held with a reaching start (due to a wind shift, the latter four races had upwind starts). My parents are back on Karl, it’s their second time on board. Last time, Karl was Engine-less and on a mooring. This time, they actually get to take him out for a spin. Why would you sail your home up a jungle river in French Guyana? Well, because it’s fun obviously! One of our favorite things is exploring off the beaten path in Delos, and taking our sailing home up a fresh water river is too cool to pass up. We get Delos way back off of a small tributary and anchor up for some dinghy exploring in Maggie. We notice that the animals are extremely skittish, and and find a patch of forest that’s been utterly destroyed by illegal logging. We return to the town of Maroni to seek answers and try to figure out what’s going on. We tour a traditional village in Suriname, witness the local carnival, and finally end up a a wildlife sanctuary where we get some answers about what’s going on with the ultra-skittish monkeys. Then when our trip to French Guyana just couldn’t get any more random we get access to the European Spaceport and are able to film an Ariane V rocket launch! Incredible!!! Further north in Prince William Sound, Alaska, there are more glaciers. We go to Barry Arm glacier and find three glaciers next to each other and a majestic waterfall. The glaciers are beautiful with the different colors but it is very noticeable how the glaciers have shrunken because of the climate change. We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built Beason 40 in aluminium, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds take us. Ahoy, Oh how have I missed that. Hoisting our sails, using the natural forces moving from one beautiful spot to another. Pushed by wind and waves we enjoyed sailing down the Pacific Baja California so much. ZERO performed very well and we were almost flying. 8 and sometimes even 9 knots, in a calm ocean, no rolling no surfing just pure power of the wind. And then, anchored in beautiful Turtle bay we even found good conditions to pump up our kites and went kiteboarding. And in Abreojos Poseidon even let me enjoy windsurfing.. oh what an awesome time.. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.
