We plan well before setting off again because we are going through Wrangell Narrows, a narrow channel where two currents meet and we’re going through on a springtide! We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. Ahoy, what a great feeling to round Lands End and enter the huge bay of Cabo San Lucas. Of course the commercial circus with tons of jet skies and party boats was swirling around us like flies but Cabo has a few quiet spots as well and we were up to find them. The change of the conditions couldn't be any clearer. The moment we rounded that rock it was summer. The cold wind of the pacific is blocked by the mountains. The water is warmer even though it's only the far entrance of the sea of cortez. All of a sudden we could spend ages in the water and Fay couldn't get enough of it. But because Cabo is Cabo, we only stayed a few days. Enough to explore beaches and city, stock up with fresh veggies and leave before you lose your temper to one of the panga captains or jet skies passing by with full speed just an arms length away from your boat. After a long time weather bound in Huntington NY (Long Island), s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54), is on the move again. This sailing trip takes us down the East River alongside Manhattan. But this time, as opposed to July when we came up the river, we have to be passing on the east side of Roosevelt Island, not the normal west side. As a result, we have to go under the lifting bridge at the Roosevelt Island. UN Security Council was in session that week, and maritime traffic restrictions were firmly in place on the west side. These restrictions made our journey a bit twitchy, as even when the lifting bridge is fully open, Cloudy Bay’s mast only just fits under the bridge. There are lots of big motor boats speeding by in that area, creating lots of wake. And if one of these boats would have gone passed us just as we were crossing under the bridge, our mast would have touched for sure and we would have been in big trouble. To add to the drama, the current was very strong pushing us towards the bridge when it was still closed and we had to motor hard against the tide to keep at a safe distance. It all went well in the end. Manhattan skyline was as impressive as usual, although the sky was not clear to allow us the perfect photo opportunity. And as expected, we circled the New York Harbor yet again, for a proper farewell from the big city. From New York we were planning to have a night sailing trip to Cape May, but the weather turned bad and strong head winds changed our plans. We anchored in the shelter behind Sandy Hook. The next morning, we continued the sailing journey to Cape May NJ, during which Oana got sea sick. We spent one day in Cape May, visiting the beautiful town and the nice popular beaches. 27-30 Sep 2018

However with an offshore easterly to southeasterly blowing, the swell failing to line up with the breeze and often coming from different directions, combined with the ebb flowing west out of Lisbon’s Tagus River for most of the day, racing today was a most complex exercise for the tacticians. It also was for the race committee; PRO Peter Reggio somehow managing to find conditions stable enough to hold a second race, after his first attempt had to be abandoned following a major right shift. The US Sailing Reach Initiative, a national STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) educational program to inspire sailing programs and schools to utilize sailing as a teaching platform, focuses on building community partnerships through program implementation. Columbia Sailing School and Yacht Club in Chicago has been implementing Reach for several years and was recently recognized as an Emerging Hub and Mid-West Center of Excellence in the Reach Program. They utilize local and regional partnerships to execute their programming and engage students on a deeper level. Module six of the Reach curriculum is featured in this video. This is Part 2 of our portlights project. This time nothing is filtered and the video is normal speed, that is why it is a little too long. Since I didn't do much of editing on this video, there is some swearing, so keep that in mind when watching , lol. I go into explaining why I went with 3M VHB double face tape instead of screws for the new portlights. Also, excuse my sweating, it was very very hot with no wind at all in full Florida sun. Products used: 3M 5952 VHB tape, you can find it all over the place but this was the fastest shipping for me : https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01BU7038A/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 DOW Corning 795 black silicone, I ended up getting it from local plastic shop, since everywhere else it was taking 2.5 weeks to get it. Price difference was only about a dollar a tube. Ended up using about a quarter of tube per portlight. 1/4" Cell Cast Acrylic grey sheet material. Ended up getting it from local plastic shop, seems like most plastic shops stock it for window or boat applications. Also available in thicker 3/8" but most shops I checked didn't stock it and I had to wait about 3 weeks. You can always try this supplier that was recommended to me: https://www.estreetplastics.com/Plexiglass-Grey-Smoked-3-8x24x48-p/t803752448.htm Goof Off from Local Lowes for clean up and caulking removal. We mix some fantastic sailing with incredible food discoveries in this episode. First we discover the joys of foodie city Alicante on mainland Spain. After that we have a wild Nikau record (12.6 knots) downwind ride to Cartegena where we discover a tapas & beers festival is on citywide - all the restaurants are offering a tapa & drink for only 2.50 euro a pop (we were able to exchange beer for wine & coke as well thankfully). We also make some new friends with a French family in the very affordable but excellent marina in Cartegena. So impressed with the history, food, culture and marinas in Spain - exceeds all our expectations!! We are the Robbins family sailing on our yacht named Nikau. Our 3 kids are doing NZ correspondence school on board. They are growing to love it! What's not to love about 3 hours of school a day and then a different playground for the afternoon every day! We've traveled from New Zealand to Sardinia in Italy to pick up our boat and we plan over a few seasons to sail her back to New Zealand. We hope you enjoy following us on our adventures! I had spent so much time and effort trying to get all of my measurements just right when I was replacing all of the standing rigging, and it all came down to a single very moment where I would know if I had done everything right. While in the Isle of Man, we took the opportunity to go out with Sailing for the Disabled. It was a fantastic experience and gave kids from the Isle of Man time at sea gave us the opportunity to be involved in a great project as well as helming a 48ft Beneteau.
